Description
UNITED STATES JAMES E. TERRY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO RUSSELL 85 ERWIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N.
PATENT OFFICE.
THE
IMPROVED STRIKE FOR DOOR-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,203, dated April 14, 1863.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES E. TERRY, of Philadelphia, in the county ot' Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Strikes for Door-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the `accompanying drawings, making apartof this specification, in which- Figure l is a front or face view of my invention applied to a door-frame, the lock and a portion of the door being shown in red; Fig. 2, the same view as Fig. l, with the eX- ception that the invention is used with a door which swings in an opposite direction to that of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detached side view of my invention.
Similar letters ot .reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a strike for door-locks which will be capable ot' being applied, without being inverted or re versed in position, to the frame of either a right or left hand door. The invention is designed to be used with what is generally known as the carpenter-lock,7 or those which have a latch or risingand-falling bolt.
The invention consists in forming the strike with a central partition-plate and having an opening to receive the latch at each side of said partitionplate in the Jr'ace or front plate of the strike, with an inclined projection below each latch-opening, all being arranged in such a manner that the desired end is attained.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, Iwill proceed vto describe it.
A represents the strike, which may be cast in one piece, of any suitable. metal, and is formed of a face or front plate, a, having two openings, b b, in it at each side and in line with each other, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. At the inner side of this face or front plate, c, there is a central partition-plate, c, which may extend the whole length of a, terminating at each end in a semicircular or arched rib, d, the width of which is equall to I the plate a. These ribs d serve to strengthen the strike, and afford a good bearing for the same when applied to the frame or easing of the door, the strike being secured to the frame or casing by means of screws passing through the face or frontplate,a. The two latch-openings b b are divided by a plate, e, which extends down to an inclined projection, f, the upper edge of which is in line or terminates with the lower edges of the latch-openings b b. By this arrangement it will be seen that what may be termed a double strike77 is -obtained, as either part or side may be usedthat is to say, either latch opening b placed adjoining the lock, according to which way the door swings. This will be fully understood by referring to Figs. l and 2, in which the strike is shown applied in one to the right and in the other to a left hand door, a portion of a door and its case or frame being shown in red. It will also be seen that in order to apply the strike to either door. the former does not require to be invertedthe lock requires to be inverted, but not the strike. The latter has hitherto been made with two openings at one side-one near the upper and the other near the lower end-so that by inverting the strike, as well as the lock, the former could be applied to either a right or left hand door. Strikes formed in that way, however, do not present as neat an appearance as the withindescribed invention, as the unoccupied opening at the lower part of the strike destroys the uniformity of the parts, and gives an unsightly appearance to the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A strike provided with two latchopenings, b b, side by side, an inclined projection,f, and a central partition-plate, c, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
