FRITZ VICTOR LUNDBEOK, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,824, dated December 24, 1901.
Application filed June 11, 1901.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRITZ VICTOR LUND- BEOK,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Trnnk,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved trunk arranged with a plurality of drawers located one above the other and arranged to completely fill the trunkbody, the construction permitting independent use of the drawers, so that the owner can readilygain access to any one ofthe drawers without disturbing the positions of the other drawers.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement with the cover opened and the drawers partly drawn out. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the improvement with the cover partly open, the top drawer removed, and the lower drawers in an innermost position, the bottom drawer being locked. Fig. 3 is-a similar view of'the same with the cover in an open vertical position, the two upper drawers removed, and the lower drawer unlocked; and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of. the same with the drawers shown in section on the line 4 t in Fig. 3. v
The improved trunk consists, essentially, of a body A, open at the front and provided with suitable guideways for the drawers B B B located one above the other and adapted to be drawn out or pushed in independently of one another. The upper drawers B B when pushed into an innermost position have their front ends approximately flush with the front of the body A, while the bottom drawer B when pushed completely into a rearmost position has its front end B projecting somewhat beyond the front of the body A, as is plainly indicated in Figs. 2 and Serial No. 64,115. (No model.)
3. This front B of the drawer B is'adapted to be met by the free end of the cover 0, connected byhinges D with the top of the body A at or near the front edge thereof as is plainly shown in the drawings, so that when the cover 0 is swung into a closed position it meets with the top of the projecting end B of the bottom drawer, so that the free end of the cover 0 can be locked to the end B by a suitable locking device F. of any approved construction.
When the cover 0 is swung up intoa vertical position, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, then the owner of the trunk has convenient access to'any one of the drawers. The lower drawer B is locked in an innermost position by a locking device controlled by the cover 0, so that as long as the cover 0 is in a closed or partly-open position the bottom drawer cannot be withdrawn from the body A, and only when the cover 0 is swung into the vertical position (shown in Figs. 3 and 4) does the lower drawer B become unlocked. It can then be withdrawn from the body A. This locking device consists, essentially, of rods F, pivoted to the inside of the cover 0 at or near the fulcrum end thereof, said rods extending downwardly through suitable guideways G, attached to the front edge of the sides of the bodyA, thelower or free end of the rods F being adapted to pass into pockets I-I, formed in the projecting end B of the bottom drawer 13*, so that when the latter is in an innermost position, as indicated in Fig. 2, the pockets H are-in alinement with the rods F, so that when the cover 0 is swung downward and the rods F are moved downward then the free ends of the rods enter the pockets H, and thereby lock the bottom drawer B in place.
From the foregoing it is evident that the trunk-body A is completely occupied by the drawers B B B and the drawers can be con veniently withdrawn at any time when the lid or eoy er C is opened to permit the owner of the trunk to get at the contents of any one of the drawers whenever desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A trunk, comprising a body closed at its top, bottom, back and ends, a plurality of drawers in said body, the bottom drawer be ing extended'beyond the front of the body, a
cover hinged to the front edge of the top of the body and adapted to cover all the drawers above the bottom drawer, and a rod carried by the cover and adapted toenter a socket in the lower drawer when the cover is closed, substantially as specified.
2. A trunk, comprising a body closed at its top, bottom, back and ends, a plurality of drawers in said body, the bottom drawer being extended beyond the front of the body, a
cover hinged to the front edge of the top of the body and adapted to cover all the draw-- ers above the bottom drawer, the said bottom drawer being provided in one of its side walls with a socket or opening, a bar pivoted at its upper end to the hinged edge of said cover and adapted to enter said socket when the cover is closed, and a guide on the front edge of said body for said rod, substantially as specified.
ings for the rods on the body, and pockets in said bottom drawer,to receive the free ends of the rods, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRITZ VICTOR LUNDBEGK.
