DESK ATTACHMENT FOR TRUNKS.

Beit known that I, LOUIS GANICK, of Rockford, in the county of Vinnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Attachments to Trunks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved desk attachment to trunks, which can be readily stored away in the lid and body of the trunk and placed in positionfor use in opening the trunk, and the invention consists of a trunk the lid of which is provided with bottom sections hinged to the opposite side walls of the lid, said bottom sections having at their meeting ends hinged auxiliary sections or leaves. The bottom sections and the hinged auxiliary sections are secured, when the lid is thrown into open position, by pins into sockets of the side walls of the trunk-body, and serve for supporting two hinged and folding leaves, of which one is secured by pins to the upper edges of the bottom sections, while the other leaf is supported in inclined position by stays that are set into notched strips attached to the inner side walls of the trunk-body. The leaves forming the desk attachment are folded together and stored away in the trunk-body after use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a vertical transverse section of the trunk, showing the lid open and my improved desk attachment in position for use. Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, a vertical longitudinal section and a vertical transverse section of the trunk, shown with closed lid and with the desk attachment folded away in the lid and body of the trunk.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the trunk-body, and B the lid of the same. The bottom of the lid is formed by two sections, C O, which are hinged to the opposite side walls of the lid B, and provided at their inner meeting ends with short auxiliary sections O', that are hinged to the bottom sections, C C. W'hen the sections C C and C C are placed in position in the lid B, so that the auxiliary sections C O abut against each other, a space is formed, as shown in Fig. 2, for storing away differvent articles. The bottom sections, C C, may

be connected and retained in position in the lid by a hook and eye, or any other locking device. (Not shown in drawings.)

When the trunk is to be used Vfor writing in connection with my improved desk attachment, the lid is thrown back into open position, as shown in Fig. 1, after which the bottom sections, O O, and auxiliary sections O O are moved in forward direction, so that the bottom pins,'c c', of the side walls of the trunkbody A enter into corresponding socketfholes of the bottom and auxiliary sections G C', which latter form thereby vertical extensions of the side walls of the trunk-body. On the upper edges of the bottom and auxiliary sections O O are supported two hinged leaves, D D', of which the leaf D is connected to the bottom sections, C C, by means of connectingpins d d', as shown in Fig. l. The leaf D is hinged to ashort intermediate piece, Dwhich is connected at the ends by pivot-links Z d to the leaf D. The second leaf, D', extends at a suitable inclination in forward direction beyond the front wall of the trunk, and is supported by inclined stays D3,which are applied by detachable hinge-connections to rests e c at the under side of the leaf D. The lower ends of the stays D3 are set into notched strips D4, attached to the inside of the side walls of t-he trunk-body A. The upper corners of the auxiliary sections O are inclined or rounded off for the inclined front leaf, D. To the front end of the leaf D is attached a hasp, f, that fits into the lock of the trunk-body and admits the locking of the leaf to the body A when it is desired to leave the desk attachment in position for use but keep the trunk locked at the same time.

When the trunk and desk attachment are in position to be used for writing, the top leaf, D, of the desk attachment and the lid of the trunk are preferably covered by a suitable cloth, E, that drops down over the sides and back of the trunk, so as to improve the appearance of the same.

The trunk-body A is provided with'slotted metallic corner-strips g g, that are guided along headed screws g' of the trunk-body and are clamped by the same, so as to form feet on which the trunk can be supported at a height convenient for writing.

After use the desk attachment is stored away by first dctaching the stays D3 and folding the leaves D D one over the other, and placing them,withtl1e stays, in the body of the trunk, as shown in Fig. 3, after which the bottoni sections, C C, and auxiliary sections C C are folded away into the lid, so as to form the bottoni of the same, as shown in Fig. 2. The corner-feet g are then replaced in position at the corners of the body A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, forming in this position protecting corner-strips for the trunk.

In this manner aconvenient desk attachment to trunks is obtained.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of atrunlcbody having notched interior side strips, a lid having hinged bottom sections and auxiliary sections hinged to the inner ends of said bottom sections, and a desk attachment consisting of folding leaves and hinged stays, said leaves being supported on the bottom and auxiliary sections and 011 the stays, substantially as set forth.

The combination of a trunk-body having interior notehedside strips, a lid having hinged bottom sections and auxiliary sections pivoted to the inner ends of thc bottom sections, folding leaves supported on the bottom and auxiliary sections, detach ablestays bearing against rests of the front leaf and into the notched strips of the body, and a hasp attached to the front leaf, substantially as described.

3. A folding desk attachment for trunks, consisting of two folding leaves, an intermediate shorter piece hinged to one of said leaves, pivot-links connecting thc ends of the inter'- niediate piece with the othcrleaf, and detachable stays hinged to the front leaf, substantially as set forth.
