UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. RIGBY, OF ALLEGAN, MIGHIGAN.-
COMBINED TRUNK, DESK, TABLE, aw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,051, dated June 27, 1882.
' Application filed October 24, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs A.R1GBY, of
Y Allegan, in the county of Allegan, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Folding Trunk, Desk, Table, and Book-Case; and I do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to combine with a traveling-trunk a writing-desk, a table, and a washstand, the several parts being constructed as will be hereinafter explained. This article is especially designed for the accommodation of persons traveling.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a perspective view showing my trunk mounted on legs and the cover raised and propped up, the inside lid being depressed and the topof the body drawn out to form a desk. Fig. 2 shows the parts adjusted to serve as a table. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the trunk mounted on its legs. Fig.4is a bottom view of the trunk, showing the legs as they appear when erected, also showing them when closed and latched, in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section of the trunk mounted on its legs, showing the cover shut.
The body A of the trunk-may be construct-- ed in the usual well-known manner.- It is provided with a box cover, B, the bottom of which has hinged to it a closing portion, 0, whichmay have the usual fastening latch. The body A is also provided with a lid or cover, D, the attaching portions or a of which are pivots which slide in grooves b, made in the inside of the ends of the trunk-body. At the front ends of these grooves b b are L- shapcd grooves b, which, when the lid or cover is moved forward, allow the pivots a a to slide forward into the grooves b, thus elevating the pivotal portion of the lid D, at the same time allowing the'front part of this lid to be depressed and adjusted so as to form a dropleaf or desk, as shown in Fig. 1.
The trunk-cover B is held in an upright position by means of props which are pivoted in grooves c o. It is in this position of the cover that it serves as adesk, receptacle for pigeon-holes F, and a book-case, G, the cover 0 being down, as shown in Fig. 1.
The book-case G is made to swivelby means of pins applied in grooves, which allow this case to be adjusted, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5. The nest of pigeon-holes and the bookcase can be removed from the cover B.
When cover 0 is shut against the cover B and the lid D is adjusted back to its place a good wash-stand is obtained. hen the lid 0 of the trunk-cover B and the cover D of the trunk-body A are closed, and the trunk-cover is adjusted at right angles to the body of the trunk and supported by a leg, G, as shown in Fig. 2, I have a table, the parts G D forming the top thereof. The leg G is made with a tongue which is received into a mortise, e.
The trunk-body is provided with hinged folding legs H H and a valance, I, against which they hear when erected, as showmin Fig. 5. In this erected position the legs are held by means of brackets J, hinged to the legs and provided with button catches g, which engage with notches made in the valance.
In addition-to the fastenings g, I employ rods K K, which are provided with. angular latches is on their ends, which, when they are turned down against the brackets J, hold them securely against the valance,'as shownin Figs. 3, 4, and 5. When the latches k are adjusted up against the bottom of the trunk the brackets can be adjusted against the legs and the latter folded against the bottom of the trunk within the valance and secured by means of spring-catches h.
What I claim as new is- 1. The trunk A B, provided with folding legs H, folding brackets J, catches therefor, and a valance, I, substantially as described.
2. The trunk A B, provided with folding legs, a nest of pi geon-holes, a book-case, a cover, 0, and an extension-lid,D, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 10th day of October, 1881. I
JAMES A. RIGBY.
