UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BURGESS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 359,009, dated March 8 1887.
Application filed April 21, 1886. Serial No. 199,603.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY Bnnenss, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Lounge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved lounge, which can be used as a receptacle for storing dresses and other articles, and which can be taken apart for convenient transportation and storage.
Theinvention consists of a lounge jointed together in such a manner as to form a box, and having a hinged seat, which is the cover of the said box.
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters {of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improve ment, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the box part of my improvement. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same on theline x 00, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the fastener.
The lounge A forms a box, B, provided with the rear part, 0, which connects at its upper end with the head part D, and at the other end with the foot cross -piece E, and with the front part, F, which is attached to the head-piece D and to the foot cross-piece E. The bottom of the box B is supported by the plates I I, secured to the bottom edges of the rear part, C, and the front part, F, at each end. The head part D and the foot cross-piece E are each provided on their upper edges with a hinge-plate, J, into which fits a hinge-plate, K, secured to the under side, at each end of the seat or cover H, which swings on the said hinge-plates J and K. A recess, L, is formed in the said head-piece D and the foot crosspiece E, so as to permit the seat H to .swing up, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. To each inner end of the said parts 0, D, E, and F is secured one, two, or more plates,M, having downwardly-projecting guide-strips N,
(No model.)
and provided with a pawl, O, pivoted on the said plate M. A guide-plate, P, is also secured near the bottom of each of the above-named four parts 0, D, E, and F. An angle-iron, Q, having on each arm a notch, Q, is fitted to slide between two corresponding plates M, on parts joined together, and the angle-iron Q is held in place by the pawl O, engaging the notches Q.
It will be seen that the box or trunk B can be opened or closed by the hingedseat H, and dresses and other articles can be stored in the said box.
The lounge can be taken apart by disengaging the pawls 0 from the notches Q, in the angle-irons Q, which permits of pulling the sev eral pieces apart.
The lounge is provided with the usual casters, and can be upholstered in any suitable manner. In case that two angle irons are used for each corner, the upper angle-iron rests on the top edge of the lower plate, M, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the lounge A, ofa boxor trunk, B, consisting of the removable side pieces, 0, D, E, and F, the bottom G, supported on the plates I, and the hinged seat .H, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a lounge, the combination of the rear HENRY BURGESS.
