COMBINED CHAIR AND DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,632, dated February 17, 1891.
Application filed July 3 l, 18 90.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY EASTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Combined Chair and Desk, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to that class of furniture known as convertible.
The objects of the invention are to provide a combined chair and writing-desk with all the conveniences and appurtenances of both, and when used as a chair to have the appearance only as such and to be adapted for a ready conversion.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a combined writing-desk and chair constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown as a chair. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the same being shown as a writing-desk. Fig. is a top plan of Fig. 2, the desk being opened. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention 1 may employ any ordinary chair, the only requisite being that it is sufficiently stout to lend stability and steadiness, and comprises a pair of rear standards or posts, which usually form a part of the backs of chairs.
In the present instance, 1 designates the chair seat and frame, the latter supported by the front legs 2 and the rear legs extended above the chair-seat to form the usual back standards 5. This seat is suitably upholstered and may be of any desired design and finish, and below the seat proper the fore legs support a rectangular frame 6, provided at the back of the chair with an opening 7 and at opposite sides with suitable ways 9. In the opening and upon the ways is mounted a drawer 8, having a suitable pull, said drawer being designed for the reception of stationary of various kinds, correspondence, (he.
10 designates a writing-desk subdivided by a transverse partition 11 to form a large stationary receivlug-compartment 12, and an up Serial No. 360507. tNo'model.)
per smaller space trisected by transverse partitions 13, forming a central pen-receiving space and inkreceiving spaces 14-. desk may of course be otherwise divided to suit the fancy of the maker and the purpose intended. The space 12 is covered by a hinged lid 16, and the upper spaces 15 and 14 by a second smaller lid 17, hinged to the upper end of the desk-frame. The lid 16 serves as a writing-space, and may be covered with a suitable material, such as leather, baize, &c., and is maintained in a locked position by means of a swiveled L-shaped bolt 18 or any othersnitable'catch. The desk serves as such and also as a back of the chair, and for this reason has its front face upholstered, as at 19, to correspond with the upholstery of the seat. Bolts 20 pass laterally through each of the rear standards 5 and take into the opposite sides of the desk, so that the latter is pivoted in position.
21 designates a pair of turn-buttons pivoted, as at 23, to the rear edge of the seatframe and adapted to be turned to a vertical position and extend above said frame in rear of the desk, and thus maintain the same rigidly in a vertical position, so as to serve as a back. Simultaneous movement upon the part of the buttons is secured by means of a connecting-rod 22, loosely pivoted at its ends to the corresponding free ends of the buttons.
21 designates a pair of jointed braces, the ends of which are pivoted, as at 25, to the sides of the desk near its lower end and to the inner sides of the standards 5 at points just above the seat. The braces are formed in sections and pivoted together at their inner ends, the upper brace having a recess 26 upon its front edge, into which takes a lug or stop 27, formed upon the upper end at the similarside of the lower brace, so that when the two bracesections are brought into parallelism or alignment they can move no further, and are as rigid as it formed integral. In this manner the desk may be supported at a proper inclination and adapted to be written upon. It will be understood that the interior of the desk will be provided with all the accessories necessary to complete writing outfit, and the under side of the cover may be provided with a portfolio or pocket 28 for the convenience of the writer.- When the writing opera The 2 emcee tion has been completed, the desk is closed and is swung to a vertical position, the braces readily yielding at their joints and folding, as shown, after which the buttons 21 are swung to a vertical position and the writingalesk is transformed into an ordinary-looking chair.
It will be observed that the tnrn'bnttons 21 when in a vertical position not only serve to retain the chair-back in position, but also as a lock for the drawer, so that said chair may be moved about in the same manner as an ordinary chair without any danger of spilling the contents.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim is- The combination, with a chair-frame comprising a pair of rear vertical standards, of
CHARLES HENRY EASTE.
