UNITED` STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX HALLHEIMEB, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FLDING BED AND ,CLosl-:iz
l SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,059, dated May 16, 1882.
4 l Application filed March 1li, 1882. (No model.)
The object of my invention is to provide a 'new and improved piece ofv furniture combin ing a folding bcdstead and a closet or ward` robe;
Reference is` to be had to the accompanying drawingstorming part of this specification, in
`r`which similar letters ot' reference indicate correspondingr parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective View of my improved combined folding bed and closet, show- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevationot' the same, showing the bedloweredor in place. Fig. 3 is a sectional planl view of the same on the line x or, Fig. 2. Fig. fi. is a detail sectional plan view of one corner of the swinging foot-piece on the liney '"jzj, Fig. 2. Fig.,5 is a detaih longitudinal sectionalelevation ofthe base ofthe combined bed and: closet, the bed being lowered or unfolded.
The box or closet A, resting ona base,v B, is providedl in its front with single or double folding doors B', either plain or ornamental, with wood or glass llin gs, as may be desired. This closet is provided with a longitudinal partition, @,which divides the closet into a front andnrear compartment, A A2, which partition C extends from the top ofthe closet down to the bottom B2 of the front compartment, A', which is about six inches above the bottoni C of the closet.
The side rails, D, ot' the bedstead are provided withinwardly-projecting bottom dan ges, D, which are pivoted to the top of the base B at the ends of the same, so that when these side rails, D, are raised the tlanges D will rest against the front of the closet and the rails D will rest against the sides ot' the closet, as shown. The top ot the base B is provided with a half-bead, a, and the end ofthe flange D of the rail D is provided with a quadrant recess, b, which tits against the halt-bead a. Two legs, E', are connected by a board or end plate, E2, which form a foot-piece, E, which legs E are pivoted to the free ends ot' the side rails, D. This t'oot-pieceE may beornamented as may be desired. When the bed is folded the legs rest against the under surfaces ofthe tlanges Dl of the side rails and project from the top ot' the closet, and the end board, E2,
forms an ornamental top for the closet, as
shown.
Each side rail, is provided with a springcatch, F, provided with a hooked end projecting from the free end of the rail, which catch is provided with a stud, c, projecting from the inner surface ofthe rail. the catch can be passed through a recessed plate, d, in the inner surface ofthe leg E.
'lhe hooked end of A i The sides of the closet A are each provided l `at the upper front corner with a horizontal groove, G, open at the frontend andterininating at the inner end in a deeper recess or aperture, f. When the side rails, D, are raised the studs c ot` the catches F pass through the grooves G into the recessf, and thus lock the side rails, D, in the raised position. A spring,
H, ot' any desired constructiomis contained in a recess, H,`.at each end of the base B, and has one end firmly secured to the base and the other end attached to a swinging or pivoted arm, g, attached to the end of thc said rail D, which arm G tits into the recess, which ,l
iront side. `The length ot' this board J is equal to the distance the inner surfaces ot' the railsD,
are separated from each other.
The mattress K is attached to and rests on a series of transverse strips, L, of the same length as the board J, which strips are connected by leather straps or bands on the top of the strips, below the mattress. One end of the mattress is attached to the inner surface of the end board, J, and to the other end ot' the mattress two or more bands or straps, M, are attached, which pass over a roller, N, journaled directly below the partition O, and from there pass over a roller, O, journaled in the top of the rear compartment, A2.
To the ends ofthe straps M a weight-block,
IOO
P, is attached, which extends transversely across the inner surface of the back I" of the closet, the ends of this weight-block passing under vertical flanged guide-strips Q on the inner surface of the back P of the closet.
A latch, R, of any suitable construction, is pivoted to the inner surface ot' the foot-board E, and can be passed over the upper edge of the board J, to hold and lock the same against the foot board E when the mattress Kis withdrawn.'
The base B contains a front or side drawer, S, for containing the pillow S and the bedclothes.
A check-block, T, is secured on the top of the closet to prevent folding the foot-piece E when the rails D arc raised.
If the front compartment, A", is to be used as a wardrobe, it is to be provided with suitable hooks. I prefer to provide a series of sliding hooks, k, suspended from a rod, l, suspended from the top of the closet by rods m. The front compartment, A,can be arranged for use as a ward robe, bureau, book-case, chinacloset, closet for linen or bed-clothing, Src.
The length of the mattress K must be equal to the length of the side rails, D. When the rails Dare raised--that is, when the bed is folded-the outer surfaces of the flanges D will bc visible on the front ot' the closet and form projecting end rails, which give the closet a very elegant finish.
ln" place of the weight, a spring-roller may be used, if desired.
The operation is as follows: Fig.1 shows the bed' folded. To lower or unfold the bed for use, theouter or upper ends of the side rails,
1),'are swung downward and the upper parts ofthe legs E are folded against the outer ends and is pushed-back into its opening, whereby the mattress will be pushed into the compartment A2, in lwhich it is raised by the weightblocl-P,-which descends inits guides Q. The
slats or rails L support the mattress and permit the same to bend over the roller N Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 1. The combination, with the closet A, having a rear compartment, A2, extending under the bottom of compartment A', of the flexiblyconnected strips L, carrying av mattress, the end weighted straps, M, and the pulleys N O, as and forfthe purpose described.
2. The combination,` with the clos'et A and the base B, having curved bead a., of the side rail,D,having the inwardly-projecting flanges D pivoted to the top front edge of base B, and having the curved recess b, whereby the flanges can be made to rest against the front and the rails against the sides of closet, as described.
3. The combination, with each side rail and closet A, of the spring-catch hook F, having stud e passing through a plate on rail D and into a closctgroove,g, terminating in a deeper recess,j', as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the base B, having recess H', and the rails D, ofthe swinging arms g and the springs H,arranged in said recess, whereby the side rails are partially counter-balanced, as described.
5. The combination, with the closet A, provided with front and rear compartments, A A2, of the hinged bedstead side rails, D, the sliding mattress K L, the straps M, the weightblock P, and the guides Q, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the pur pose set forth.
6. The eombination, with the closet A, of the hinged bedstead side rails, D, the foot-piece E, hinged to the same, the sliding mattress KL, the foot-board J, attached to one end of the same and adapted to close the opening through which the mattress slides into the closet, and the latch R on the foot-piece E, for locking the board J to this foot-piece when the mattress is withdrawn, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
