HANNAH E. I'I. GOLLINGS, OF KULM, NORTH DAKOTA.
CHAIR.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that l, lllANNAn E. l1. (Toi.-
LINGs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kulm, in the county of Lamoure and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following` is a specification.
This invention. relates to nursery chairs, the object of the invention being to provide a combination chair that is readily convertible from one use to another', and to construct the chair so that parts thereof when not in use can be stored at a convenient point upon the chair.
A further object of this invention. is to provide a supplemental seat and simple means for retaining the seat to the permanent seat of the chair when in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the specific scope of the claim maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
.ln the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicato similar parts in the several views ,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair, the supplemental seat being removed. Fig. 2 is a detail section through a portion of the chair.
The chair comprises four supporting legs 1 disposed at four corners, as shown, and connected at their tops by a seat 2 having a ccntrally located aperture 3. Beneath the seat, the legs are connected by vertical panels e at the sides and front end to form a compartment 5. The panels ll have secured. thereto a bottom 6, and at the rear of the chair the said compartment is provided with a swinging door 7 which may be provided, if desired, with a suitable lock. 1t may be stated that the bottom 6 is extended slightly above the lower edges ofthe panels 1, and the said panels at the sides of the chair are provided with cleats 8 which are thus disposed in spaced relation to the bottom as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The bottom 6 has secured thereto at the sides thereof parallel bars 9 and 10, and at the rear edge a bar 11, and as shown, the said bars 9, 10 and 11 are provided with beveled inner faces 12. A supplemental seat 13 is provided and has secured thereto a cane or foraminous body 14. The supplemental seat at the front end thereof carries a depend- Specieation of Letters Patent.

ing dowel pin 15 adapted to be seated in a vertically disposed passage 16 formed in the seat 2 upon its upper' surface adjacent to the front edge thereof. At each side of the passage 16 the seat is recessed as shown at 17 in order to allow free manipulation of the finger beneath the front edge of the seat when it is desired to engage the same with the seat 2 or remove it therefrom. rlfhe seat 13 is provided with beveled outer edges 18 adapted to correspond with the beveled faces 12 in order that the said supplemental seat may lie flush with the bars 9, 10 and 11. The seat 2 supports the usual arm rest 19, and a back 20. il. suitable shelf 21 is hingedly con nected to the back and may be swung to lie in parallel relation to the seat 2. lt will thus be seen that the compartment 5 is located directly beneath the seat 2, and that access may be had to the compartment from the rear of the chair. When the supplemental seat is not in use, it is obvious that it may be stored beneath the bottom 6 of the compartment 5 by engaging the same with the cleats 8.
1 claim A chair comprising a seat having an aperture formed therein, supporting legs connected at their upper ends to the corners of the seat, an inclosure beneath the seat of said chair, said inclosure comprising side panels secured at its ends to the chair and a lfront panel secured at its ends to the said legs, a swinging door normally closing the inclosure, a bottom connected to the panels and disposed in spaced relation to the aperture formed in the seat, said seat having a passage located adjacent to its front edge and provided adjacent to said passage with linger receiving recesses, parallel bars secured upon the seat at the sides thereof, a supplemental seat having its sides slidably engaged between. said bars, said seat having a foraminous bottom closing the aperture in the first named seat, and a locking pin carried by the supplemental seat and adapted to be seated in the passage formed in the first named seat and arranged to hold the supplemental seat against sliding movement or casual displacement.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
