ARTICLE-DEPOSITORY.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALoYsIUs H. FRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paxico, in the county of Wabaunsee and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Article-Depositories, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to an article depository, and more particularly to the class of coin controlled lockers.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a depository or locker of this character in which articles may be placed therein for safety and which will require the deposit of a check thereinto for the unlocking of the same before the article can be removed therefrom.

Another object of the invent-ion is the provision of a depository of this character in which a check will be held within the same and the deposit of a coin within the depository must be made before the check can be extracted, the said check being designed to control a lock which will release a sliding door so that the parcel or other deposit made within the depository can be readily and easily removed therefrom.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a depository of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eiiicient in its purpose and inexpensive in manufacture.

lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a depository constructed in accordance with the invention showing the compartment for receiving parcels or other deposits in closed locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the check compartment closedv and locked. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the depository, the parts being in the position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the parts in the position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the depository. Referring to the drawings by numerals the depository comprises a box-like body 10, constructed from any suitable material, and is formed with a medial partition 11 providing

independent compartments

12 and 13 respectively. At the open front of the body and adapted to close the compartment 12 is a door 14, the same being hinged in any suitable manner and is normally closed by means of a retractile spring 15, the door being provided with the usual loop handle 16 whereby it may be manually opened to gain access to the interior of the compartment 12 which is designed to receive a check for a purpose presently described.

At the front of the body 10 and adapted to close the compartment 13 is a swinging door 17, the same being hinged at 18 to the said body and is held in open position by means of a hinged brace 19 of the ordinary well-known type. .The door 17 when open will permit access to be had to the interior of the compartment 13 which is designed to receive articles such as parcels or the like.

Formed in the end walls of the body 10 are guideways 20 in which travels a slidable lid or gate 21 the width of which is of a size relative to the width of each of the

12 or 13 and is designed to lie exteriorly of the doors 14 and 17 when closed, and after said lid or gate has been shifted over each of the same.

Mounted at the side edges of the lid or gate 21 medially thereof are outwardly projecting

22 and 23 respectively for alternating engagement with coin or check controlled lock mechanism presently described.

Provided in one side wall of the body 10 is a suitable recess 24 in which is mounted a swinging latch rod 25, the same supported upon a pivot 26 and is formed at one end with a catch nib 27 adapted to work into and out of the path of the keeper eye 23 for the engagement with and the disengagethereby causing the rocking of the latch lever 25 to disengage its end 27 from the keeper eye 23 and thereby freeing the lid or gate 21 so that the same may be shifted from over the door 17 closing the compartment 12, and in this manner the door 17 may be opened for the deposit of articles within the compartment 13 or the removal of such articles therefrom. Leading from the slot 28 through the compartment 13 to the compartment 12 is a chute 34 in which the check 29 is deposited after being shifted so that it will gravitate into the compartment '12 to be subsequently removed therefrom on the opening of the said compartment in a manner presently described.

Formed in the outer side Wall of the compartment 12 is a suitable recess 35 in which is mounted a rocking latch rod 36 supported upon a pivot 37 and has formed at its inner end a catch nib 38 adapted to be moved into engagement with and disengagement from the keeper eye 22 on the lid or gate 21 and when engaged therewith will sustain the said gate or lid 21 locked in closed position over the door 14 closing the compartment 12.

Formed in one end wall of the body 10 is a coin entrance slot 39 communicating with a coin chute 40 which is adapted to direct a coin into the path of movement of the outer end of the latch rod 36, the coin being designated at 40" and is received in the fork end 41 of an operating lever 42 supported upon a pivot 43, the lever 42 being projected exteriorly of the body 10 and is formed with a hand knob 44 whereby it may be locked so that the coin will be moved therewith and at the same time the latter will have moved the latch rod 36 for disengaging the catch nib 38 from the keeper eye 22, and thereby unlocking the lid or gate 21 so that it may be shifted from over the door 22 to a position over the door 17 when closing the compartment 13 and in this manner on the opening of the door 14 access may be had to the check 28 contained in the compartment 12 for the removal thereof whereby it may be carried about by a person to avoid the opening of the compartment 13 by a malicious or unscrupulous person.

When desired to open the compartment 13 the check is deposited in a manner as heretofore stated. The coin 40 when shifted is brought into alinement with a delivery slot 45 communicating with a coin receiver 46 mounted upon the body 10 and this receiver 46 may be detached for extracting the coins therein, the said receiver being fastened to the body 10 in any desirable manner.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.

What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a body having independent compartments, doors closing said compartments, a lid slidable in the body and movable over either of said doors, and independent check operated lock mechanism cooperative with the lid for fastening it in either position.

2. In a device of the class described, a body having independent compartments, doors-closing said compartments, a lid slidable in the body and movable over either of said doors, independent check operated lock mechanism coiiperative with the lid for fastening it in either position, and a receiver for the checks discharged from one of said lock mechanisms.

3. In a device of the class described, a body having independent compartments, doors closing said compartments, a lid slidable in the body and movable over either of said doors, independent check operated lock mechanism coiiperative with the lid for fastening it in either position, a receiver for the checks discharged from one of said lock mechanisms, and means for delivering checks into one of said compartments from the other lock mechanism.

4. In a device of the class described, a body having independent compartments, doors closing said compartments, a lid slidable in the body and movable over either of said doors, independent check operated lock mechanism cooperative with the lid for fastening it in either position, a receiver for the checks discharged from one of said lock mechanisms, means for delivering checks into one of said compartments from the other lock mechanism, and means for automatically closing one of said doors.

5. In a device of the class described, a body having independent compartments, doors closing said compartments, a lid slidable in the body and movable over either of said doors, independent check operated lock mechanism cooperative with the lid for fastening it in either position, a receiver for the checks discharged from one of said lock mechanisms, means for delivering checks into one of said compartments from the other lock mechanism, means for automatically closing one of said doors, and manually operated means cooperative with said lock mechanisms on the deposit of checks in the body.

6. In a device of the class described, a body having independent compartments, doors closing said compartments, a lid slidable in the body and movable over either of said doors, independent check operated lock mechanism cooperative With the lid for fastening it in either position, a receiver for the checks discharged from one of said lock mechanisms, means for delivering checks into one of said compartments from the other lock mechanism, means for automatically closing one of said doors, manually operated means cooperative With said lock mechanisms on the deposit of checks in the body, and means for supporting the other door when opened.
