J. HARTMAN. DEPOSIT AND COLLECTION REGEPTAGLE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 19, 1912.

Fig. 1.
m A E:
I 'BY smrns UNITE JACOB HARTMAN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
DEPOSIT AND COLLECTION BECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec.'10, 1912.
Application filed August 19, 1912. Serial No. 715,835.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAoon HARTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deposit and Collection Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to deposit and collection receptacles, and particularly to that class thereof known as milk boxes, in which a box is provided in an opening in a wall or the like which may be used to receive milk bottles and hold the same until they are removed by an authorized person. i
The device comprises a box provided'with outer and inner doors, the. outer door being used'by the milk man or person delivering the goods, and the inner door being used by the occupant of the house. Means are provided so that the outer door can be opened but once from the outside, and after the milk or other article is delivered and the door closed it cannot then be opened until the inner door shall have been opened, said means including a latch operated by the manipulation of the inner door. 1
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2, a side ele-' vation of Fig. 1 on the line AA thereof.
The box opening or compartment is indicated at X, and- 1 is the outer door and 2 is the inner door. The device is shown in the drawings with the latchunlocked so that the outer door can be opened. I The latch is indicated at 4 and is' pivoted at 5 to a bracket 3. The Wall of the box or receptacle has a fixture with one arm 8 adjacent the outer door and behind the latch, and another arm 9 in front of the latch, and the latch may engage said arm 9, as shown in dotted lines, to lockthe doorr A lever 10 is pivoted at 11 to the fixture on the side of the box, and has an' arm 12 arranged to strike and lift the latch 4 when the inner door 2 is opened, said lever being connected to the inner door 2, by means of a rod consisting of two sections 14 and 16 united by a turn buckle 15 so that the length of the rod may be adjusted to suit local conditions, one end of the rod being connected to the lever at 13 and the other being hooked into an eye 17 on the inner door.
When the deviceis in the position shown in full lines, the outer door may be opened, and this action throws down the latch 4, by-reason ofits contact with, the arm 8, the latch then resting in position to engage over the arm 9, as shown in dotted lines, when the outer door is closed, thereby lockin the door. When the inner door 2 is opened to remove the contents of the box, the lever 10 is drawn to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and this movement lifts the latch 4 from the arm 9 and throws it over against the arm 8, thus automatically resetting the latch for the next operation.
It will be seen that when the outer door is once opened, and then closed, the latch will be engaged, and said door cannot again be opened until after the inner door shall have been opened and the latch released.
. I claim as new:
1. The combination of a box-having inner and outer doors, a latch mounted on the outer door, a fixture in the box, having an arm located behind the latch and adapted by contact therewith to move the same to engaging position, and also having an arm located in front of the latch and engageable thereby tolock the outer door, and means connected to the inner door to disengage the latch from the last mentioned arm and move the same to position for contact with the first mentioned arm when the inner door is opened.
2. The combination of a box having inner and outer doors, a latch mounted on the outer door, a fixture in the box, having an arm located behind the latch and adapted by contact therewith to move the same to engaging position, and also having an arm located in front of the latch and engageable thereby to lock the outer door, and a lever pivotedjin the box and connected to the innor door and engageable with the latch to lift and disengage the same from the last mentioned arm when the inner door is opened.
3. The combination of a box having inner and outer doors, a gravity latch pivoted'on the outer door, an arm projecting in the and reset the latch in raised position when box; behind the latch and adapted to contact the inner door is opened. 10 therewith when said latch is raised and In testimony whereof, I afiix. my. signature swing the same to engaging position when in presence of two witnesses. said outer door is opened, another arm in JACOB HARTMAN.
the box, engageable by the latch when the \Vitnesses: outer door is'closed, and means connected A. B. NORRIS, to the inner door to lift and thereby release LOUIS S. PIERCE.
