Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. is, 1914.
Application filed March 27, 1914. Serial No. 827,673.
Be it known that I, JAooB HARTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deposit and Collection Receptacles, of which the following is a specification. r
This invention relates to deposit and coland particularly to that class well known as milk boxes, and having a door Which-opens at the outside and another door which 0' ens at the inside of the building, and with a \locking device which automatically locks the again until the inner door is opened, and when-the inner door is closed, the locking device is so operated that the outer door may be opened, and after being opened, and
then closed, it is again locked.
The invention is an improvement on the U. SuPatents Nos.
devices shown in my 08,770 and 1,046,? 84, the object of the present improvement being to provide aidevice which does not have to be made right and can beused in any box irrespective of the way the doors open, and in which the locking device will be operated witha much smaller movement of the inner door than in the former constructions.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device partly in section on the line A A;. of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section, and showing the locking members in position with the outer door locked. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the position of the parts when the outer door is unlocked.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the outer door and 2 the'inner door, by opening either of which access may be had to the compartment or'box therebetween. The outer door has thereon a keeper or fixture 6, secured thereto near the top of the door, and this is provided with an opening to receive the latch 4. The. fixture also has a swinging bail or detent- 7 which is lifted by the latch when the latter is raised from locked position, and which will support the end of the latch and prevent the engagement thereof when the outer door is unlocked, as shown outer door' when it i closed, so that it cannot be opened nected by a rod 10 to an eye 11 on the door 2.
. The operation is as follows :Assuming that the outer door is unlocked, as shown in a Fig. 3, the latch 4 rests on the bail 7. The outer door 1 may then be opened, and when opened the latch drops down against the stop 12. The milk bottles or other articles are then placed in the box and the door 1 is closed. The keeper 6 lifts the point of the latch which drops into the opening in the keeper and so locks the outer door, and it cannot be opened until the latch is reset. When the inner door is opened to remove the bottles, the lever 8 swings and its point lifts the latch 4. This movement lifts the ball which then drops back under the point of the latch, and when the door 2 is closed the latch rests on the bail until the outer door 1 is again opened after which the latch drops to position for re'e'ngagement with the keeper 6, as above explained. The unlocking, resetting and locking actions are automatic with the opening and closing of the respective doors.
I claim 1. The combination with a door, of a keeper attached thereto, a latch engageable with said keeper a pivoted lifter to disengage the latch therefrom, and a detent mounted on the door and operated by the latch and engaging between the latch and the keeper to prevent the same reengaging the keeper after" being released therefrom, said detent being actuated by opening the door to release the latch and permit the same to reengage the keeper when the door 1s again closed.
2. The combination with a door, of a keeper projecting on the inside thereof, a pivoted gravity atch engageable with said keeper, a ravity detent pivoted above the keeper an located in the path of movement "of the head of the latch, and adapted to lltitl be lifted. by the latch when the-latter is lifted, and means to release the latch and cause the same to lift and pass and engage above the detent, whereby rengagement of 5 the latch with the keeper is prevented until after the door is opened.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. JACOB HARTMAN. Witnesses RAYMOND H. ARNOT, ARTHUR B. NORRIS.
