To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HoRA'rIoO. WHYMAN,

a citizen of the United States, residing, at Phoenix, in the count of Maricopa and State of Arizona, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Writing Desks and Blackboards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a combination secretary or writing desk and blackboard, and more particularly to one especially designed to be used by. children attending school or in the home, but adapted for general use. I

' Combined blackboards and writing desks as heretofore ordinarily constructed are more or less complex and expensive to make, and are also troublesome to handle or'move from place to place, and liable to get out of order, and as a result there is little demand for them.

One object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable combined secretary or writing desk and blackboard composed of few parts assembled in compact form, so that it will occupy verylittle space when in use, or when packed for transportation', and which at the same time will be serviceable and commercially desirablel A further object is to provide an article of the character referred to having combined therewith a till and drawer which is adapted to serve the double purpose of a receptacle for money, chalk and writing materials and utensils, and also as a support for the blackboard when it is turned down into position for use as a writing desk.

A further object is to provide a combined blackboard and writing desk that will not only occupy little space but will allow ample room or space below the bottom of the drawer for the knees, so that the kiddies can sit comfortably when usin the desk.

A further objectis to provi e a combined secretary-blackboard that has all of the advantages of the two separate articles, at practically the cost of a secretary alone, as heretofore ordinarily constructed, and which i is inexpensive in manufacture and may be made and sold at such a low price as to enable the great mass of people to buy and use the same.

The inverrieir will first be hereinafter more particularly described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In suitable guide-ways below said drawers and pigeon holes is fitted a combined drawer and till D, which is designed and adapted to provide a receptacle for chalk, pens, pencils, or other articles. Over the combined drawer and till is pivoted along one of its edges, a swinging leaf or board E, one side or surface of WlllCll is provided with a suitable coating or materialv to form a blackboard, that is the outer side when in a vertical or raised position, the other or inner side being plain or finished so as to adapt it to serve as a writing desk when the board is turned down into a horizontal position.- In the latter position this board is firmly supported by the combined drawer and ti 1, which is drawn out for that purpose, and when the board is raised to asubstantially vertical position its outer surface is slightly inclined from base to top, away from the till, so that the center of gravity falls rearwardly of its ivotal support, whereby it is sustained in t e desiredposition to provide a blackboard tor the use of-a child at school or for other purposes. The board E may be constructed of any suitable material, and if desired may have a glass front, or removable plate of glass on .the inner side thereof for use as a writing desk and underneath which designs can be placed from whole copies may bemade for the amusement or instruction of drawer so that when the blackboard is in an upright position and the drawer is moved inwardly the till will contact with the lower edge of the hinged board andserve as a stop to prevent further inward movement of the drawer andv till, leaving the till exposed in position for use while the drawer is closed; and when the drawer is drawn out it forms with the till a support for the hinged board E when the latter is lowered into position to provide a desk for writing purposes. The raised part of the drawer and till enables one to make the till in such out line that it will conform to the exact level of the board which it supports. Constructed as described, the combination secretary-blackboard has all of the advantages of a secretary and blackboard as separate articles at practically the cost of the former and is most compact for storage or shipping purposes. By removing the combined till-drawers of two desks or combined secretary'- blackboards and placing the two desks one on top of the other, with the tapered end of one and the larger end of the other at each end, the two articles will fill a. comparatively small space, as the two till-drawers will just fit in the bottom of the base, and thus a single smooth crate will sufice for crating the two articleswithout waste of space for two, as would be necessary with a stationary till overlying or above the drawer.

For the sake of economy, all of the parts are made of wood, with suitable fastening means, such as nails or the like for securing the parts together, but metal oi other material may be used, and various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and I therefore do not desire to be limited in the appended claims to the specific construction and arrangement shown and de-.

3. In combination, a pair of uprights having comparatively wide base portions and ta ering toward their upper ends, a plurality of sliding drawers and pigeon-holes supported between said upper ends, a hinged blackboard between said uprights arranged to cover said drawers and pigeon-holes and adapted to swing downwardly into a substantially horizontal position and serve as a writing desk; a sliding drawer below said pigeon-holes carrying a till at the front thereof; said till being adapted to serve as a stop to limit inward movement of said drawer and leave the till exposed in usable position when the blackboard is raised and the drawer closed. v

4. In combination with a combined writing' desk and blackboard, including uprights between which is pivoted along one edge a board adapted to stand upon said edge in a substantially vertical position, to serve as a blackboard, and to be lowered to a substantially horizontal position, to serve as a writing desk, a combined drawer and till slidabl supported between said uprights so as to a apt said till to be exposed in position for use when said board is raised'and to serve with said drawer as a support for said board when in its horizontal position; the lower edge of said blackboard in its raised position, being arranged in the path of said till so as to stop its inward movement, causing the till to remain exposed on the outside while the drawer is closed.

5. A combined writing desk and blackboard comprisin a pair of standards consistin of plain oards having their lower ends bifurcated and tapering toward their upper ends, said ends being rigidly connected together by a cross-piece forming a shelf, spaced 'crossieces under said shelf having partitions t erebetween forming a plurality of pigeon-holes and spaces at one side for the insertion of small drawers, a combined sliding drawer and till arranged below said cross-pieces, and a hinged blackboard arranged to cover and conceal said pi eon-holes and to swing downwardly into a orizontal position and serve as a writing desk; said combined drawer and till serving as a support for said blackboard when the latter is in a horizontal position, and said till being exposed in usa le position when the sliding drawer is closed and the blackboard raised.
