Application November 14, 1941, Serial No. 119,!)67
2 (Jlaims.
This invention relates to combination or convertible furniture, and more particularly to a combined center table or stand and chair hingedly joined thereto, in such manner that the chair element may be closed into the table element, to complete the latter for service as a center stand, or so that the chair may be swung outwardly and apart from the table element, to enable the user to sit conveniently at the table element for writing or other purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide in combination a table element comprising a table top rectangular in form and supported upon a pair of legs at one end or side thereof, and a chair including a back and a seat supported upon four legs, the legs being spaced laterally to correspond with the spacing of the table legs, and the seat being adapted to serve as a medial shelf for the stand when the elements are closed together to serve as such stand, one of the frontal legs of the chair element being hingedly joined to one of the table legs to enable the chair to swing out from the table or to be closed thereinto, the chair back being a continuation or upward extension of the rear chair legs, and dimensioned and adapted to close at the legless end of the table element to complete the simulation of regular table legs at that end of the assembly.
With the above stated objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may appear from the following specification, attention is now directed to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined table and chair, showing the elements closed together to form and represent a center table or stand.
Figure 2 is a similar perspective view of the combination unit, showing the chair element opened out from the table element, to provide a seat for the user at the table, the lid of the table top being shown raised and revealing the receptacles below.
The invention comprises a chair or chair element referred to generally at 5, the same including a rectangular seat 6 supported upon pairs of frontal legs l' and rear legs 8, and provided with a raised back, the side members 8a of which are upward extensions of the said rear legs, there being a connecting cross bar 9 at the upper ends of these side members to complete the back, all as clearly shown in Figure 2.
The chair seat 6 may be of box form as shown, with the sides to, bottom 6b and rear end closure 60, the, front being left open for the insertion of articles of any kind as desired, such as stationery or toilet articles.
A complemental table element 10 is provided, comprising a horizontal, rectangular top piece or plate I l, formed with compartments or receptacles Ila, and provided with a hinged lid l2, into which is set a mirror I3. A chain M supports the lid in its open position when swung upon the hinges l5. The top plate II is supported at conventional height upon a pair of table legs 16 which are joined medially by a flat panel l1, this panel being aligned with and adapted to close over the open front of the box chair seat when the elements are closed together.
The table legs I6 are firmly joined to the top plate or piece H at one end thereof as shown, are reinforced by braces I 3 which bear up against the bottom of the top piece H, the said braces being secured both to the legs and to the top piece by screws in a conventional manner. The table legs l6 are spaced apart exactly equal with the spacing laterally of the chair legs 1 and 8, and the top piece H is substantially of the same shape and area as the seat 6. Both the table legs and the chair legs are preferably square in cross section and of the same crosss-sectional area.
The right hand chair leg I is hinged to the table leg l6 remote from the hinges I 5 of the lid l2, by a pair of vertically spaced hinges [9, in such manner that when the table element is closed over the chair element, the rear or inner faces of the table legs will squarely abut and align with the frontal faces of the chair legs 7, as clearly shown in Figure 1.
A short, horizontal floor tread or arm 23 is rigidly anchored at its inner end to the lower end of the hinged table leg l6, as indicated at 2|, and is extended inwardly beneath the top piece or plate H. This arm serves as a support against the table element tipping over inwardly. A caster 22 is mounted at the free end of the arm 20, and a roller or caster wheel 23 is pivoted to the outer side face of the foot of the free table leg 16. Thus the table element may be easily moved to or from the chair element, in the operation of the assembly.
In use, the table element In may be closed over the chair element 5, to represent and serve as an ordinary center table alone, as shown in Figure 1. In this use the chair seat 6 forms and represents a medial or lower shelf of the center stand. On the other hand, the table element may be swung outwardly from the chair element, to the element including a seat, four legs and a back,
and a table element including a horizontal top piece of substantially the same shape and area as the chair seat, and a pair of table legs at one end of the top piece, these legs being spaced apart to correspond with the lateral spacing of the chair legs, and hinge connections between a frontal chair leg and a table leg, whereby the elements may be either closed together to serve as and for a center table alone, or may be opened apart to serve as a table and attached chair, the chair seat being of box type and open at its frontal side, and the pair of table legs being connected by a medial panel aligned horizontally with and adapted to close over the open front of the box chair seat, when the elements are closed together.
2. In a device of the kind described, a chair element including a seat, four legs and a back, and a table element including a horizontal top piece of substantially the same shape and area as the chair seat, and a pair of table legs at one end of the top piece, these legs being spaced apart to correspond with the lateral spacing of the chair legs, and hinge connections between a frontal chair leg and a table leg, whereby the elements may be either closed together to serve as and for a center table alone, or may be opened apart to serve as a table and attached chair, and
