Application July 18, 1935, Serial No. 32,127
1 Claim. (Cl. 248-185) Ihe present invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination furniture and has for its primary object to provide, in a single unit, a combined desk and chair for use particularly by children.
Another very important object of the inven- "tion is to provide an article of furniture of the aforementioned character wherein the desk is mounted in a novel manner to permit said desk to be rockably adjusted as desired.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a combined desk and chair for children which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, attractive in appearance, light in weight, portable, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, showing the same in use with the desk open.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical transverse section through the invention, looking toward the chair. Figure 3 is a view of the upper portion of the invention, the desk being shown partially in side elevation and partially in section, the upper portion of the desk support being shown in section. Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through a forward portion of the invention.
Figure 5 is a view in front elevation of the upper end portion. of the desk standard.
Figure 6 is a detail view in perspective of one of the desk brackets.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a longitudinally elongated base i of suitable material, preferably wood, to the end portions of which transversely extending supporting feet 2 and 3 are secured. The longitudinal sides of the base Iare provided, in the forward portion of said base, with cut outs 4.
Rising from the rear portion of the base i are uprights 5 which are rigidly secured to the longitudinalside edges of said base by suitable means,
such as bolts or screws 6. Extending between the upper portion of the uprights 5 are cross members i on which a seat 8 is secured. The seat 8 is provided with a back 9. Braces H) extend between the seat 8 and the back 9.
Rising from the forward foot 3 is a comparatively wide, flat, inclined standard ii having mounted thereon a desk which is designated generally by the reference numeral l2. A brace i3 is provided at the point where the base i meets the standard ll. Another brace it rises from 5 the base I and has its upper end portion secured between a pair of ears l5 which are mounted on the rear of the standard ll, as illustrated to advantage in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings.
The desk l2 includes a substantially box-like 10 container [6 having partitions i'l mounted therein to provide any desired arrangement of compartments. Depending from the bottom ill of the container It are side brackets ll! and an intermediate bracket Eil. The opposed faces of the 5 side brackets l9 have formed therein, at an intermediate point, substantially X-shaped grooves 2i (see Figure 6) for the reception of the side edges of the upper end portion of the standard ll. Screws 22 extend through the side brackets it! 0 into the standard H for securing the desk ii in position for rocking adjustment, which movement will be limited by the substantially X- shaped grooves El. The upper end of the standard H has formed therein a vertical notch 23 25 (see Figure 5) which accommodates the intermediate bracket 2!]. Ears 24 project rearwardly from the upper end portion of the standard ll immediately adjacent opposite sides of the notch 23, between which ears the intermediate bracket 20 is engaged. A bolt 25 extends between the ears 2%, said bolt passing through a slot 26 which is provided therefor in the intermediate bracket 2%. The bolt 25 is provided with a wing nut ill for drawing the ears E l together in a manner 35 to frictionally clamp the intermediate bracket therebetween for securing the desk It in adjusted position.
The outer faces of the side walls 28 of the container l6 have formed therein longitudinal 4 channels 2% for the reception of slides 30. Mounted on the slides 38 is a blackboard 3i which is provided, at its rear end, with a ledge 32. The reference numeral 33 designates a top or writing desk or panel which is hingedly 45 mounted, as at 3 3, on the forward end of the blackboard 3!. A hinged brace 35 supports the top 33 in open position. A copy sheet supporting strip 36 is provided on the top 33.
It is thought that the operation of the inven- 50 tion will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. To adjust the desk l2, it is only necessary to loosen the wing nut 2?, swing said desk to the desired position on the screws 22, and then tighten said wing nut again, the 55 slot or opening 26 in the intermediate bracket 20 being large enough to permit sufficient movement to allow the desired adjustment to be had. Access to the interior of the container l6 may be conveniently had by simply sliding the blackboard 3|, with the top 33 mounted thereon, forwardly as suggested in Figure 1 of the drawings. If desired, the blackboard 3! may be hingedly mounted at its forward end on the slides 30.
It is believed that the many advantages of a combined desk and chair constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:-
The improvement described in an article of furniture, comprising a standard having a vertical central notch in its upper end and also having vertical side edges at its upper end portion, a member disposed immediately above the upper end of said standard and extending at opposite sides of the standard, spaced brackets fixed to and pendent from said member and having in their inner sides grooves of X-shape in outline receiving the said vertical side edges of the upper end portion of the standard, connections pivotally connecting said brackets to the vertical side edges of the upper end portion of the standard, a vertical central intermediate bracket fixed to and pendent from said member and having a slot, said intermediate bracket disposed in the vertical central notch of the standard, spaced ears fixed to one side of the upper end portion of the standard and disposed immediately adjacent to opposite sides of said intermediate bracket, a bolt extending through said ears and through the said slot of the intermediate bracket and headed at one end, and a nut mounted on the opposite end of said bolt at the outer side of one of said ears.
