Sacramento, county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Chairs and Ironing Boards of which the following is a specificatiom niture and particularly pertains to a combined ironing board and chair. It is the object of the present invention to'provide V a new and useful article of furniture which may be optionally arrangedfor use as an ironing board or as a chain the device being simple in construction and operation and sightly in appearance. I i
The invention contemplates the use. of a frame structure embodying a chair seat, a back, and an ironing board which is so con= nected to the frame structure that itmay be ordinarily maintained in an inconspicuous position or arrangedand support-ed over the frame in an operating position. v 7
One form which the invention mayiassame is exemplified in the following description and illustrated by way of example-in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 isa perspective view of a structure embodying the invention and disclosing the device arranged for use as a chair.
. a seat frame 12 and side and rear panels 13. i
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view disclosingthe device arranged for use as an ironing board.
Fig. 4 is a verticalsection taken on line 4+4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view showing certain details of the mechanism by which the ironing board is connected to the frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawings. A generally indicates a frame structure similar in form and proportiont-o the frame I of a chair. This frame is provided with front legs 10 and rear legs 11. The rear legs extend upwardly as shown in Fig. 1 to provide uprights for a chair back. The legs are rigidly connected to each other by Mounted on the seat frame is a seat member 14 which is connected to the seat frame at the front thereof by means of hinges 15 as shown in Fig. 4. Positioned between the upwardly extending portions of the rear .LhiS invention relates to an article of furw 7 legs 11' is a back member 16, this member is Be it known that LVPEARL Tnuirno JONES, 1 a citizen of the United States, residing at connected to theframe by a hinge structure 17. This hinge is clearly shown in Fig. 2
11 and a fiat hinge bar secured to the back member. This bar is provided with -lugs 20 which are t-urnable on the rod 18'.
Connected to bothfthe frame and the back member 16'is an ironing board 21. This w ep.

board is provided with longitudinal guide rods 22 which are spaced apart and away from the inner surface of the board as shown in Fig. 4. The rods are secured to the board adjacent the upper end thereof by flanged socket members 23. It should-be stated that the rods in tliisdnsta-nce are formed of one barwhich is bent in a V-shape, the base of 'whichis flattened and secured adjacent the lower end of the ironingboard 25 in Fig. 2. This connection consists of guide sleeves 26 which are turnably mounted on arod 27. The latter .beingsecured at its it ends within bracket bearings 28 secured on the legs 11. The sleeves 26-are each formed with a right angle extension which sleeves are bored to receive the'guide rods 22.
The ironing board isialso connected to theflback member 16. This connection is shown in Figs. 2 and 5 and. consists of a member 29 which is secured. to the back member and is formed at its ends with .bearings 3O forthe reception of a short rod 31.
This rod is'also mounted in sliding collars '32 which are mounted'ion the guide rods 22.
The connections between the ironing dotted lines in Fig. 2; When in this position the connection 25 servesas one support therefor and the back'member through: the
connection 33 serves as aisecond support.
It will be seen by referring to 4 that when. the ironing board assumes the position shown in dotted lines, the back member assumes an inclined position. To maintain the back member r gid 1n this positioma pair of brace'arms34 are provided. These arms are. seeured t0 the under side of the,
seat board 1 and are adapted to engage a pair of sockets secured in the back iii-ember.
To eliminate chattering of the connections between the ironing board and the back and frame, springs 36 are positioned between the connections as shown in Figs. l and it is obvious that these springs will absorb an sudden shocks the board might be subjected to when it is being brought either into or out of operating position. Also they will eliminate clicking and other annoying noise caused by engagement of the metallic parts whenthc board is being ironed on.
.By referring to Figd it is seen that" plurality of weights a? are mounted. in the compartment beneath. the seat. These weights serve to n'iaintain the structure firmly on the floor so as to eli: inate any danger of upsetting the structure when it is being used as an ironing board.
The compartment disposed beneath the seat and partially inclosed by theside and rear panels 13 is provided wit a bottom hinged door 39. The for may also and a be utilized to aidin supporting the structure when th ironing board is in use as shown in Fig. .3.
It is obvious that the compartment may be equlpped with shelvesor trays, or that it may be equipped with a metallic contamer and used as an ice chest. This, however, forms no important part of the present invention, and is therefore not illustrated.
In operation, tie structure is assembled as shown in the drawings, When it is d csired to employ the device asa chair the ironing board is positioned at the rear of the frame as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The seat memher will then be resting on the seat frame and the back member will be in a vertical position and there supported by the rod and connections 25 and the hinge mechanism 17.
If it is desired to arrange the device so that the ironing board may be used; the seat is raised and the back member brought to an inclined position so that the arms 34 on the seat will engage and catch in the sockets 35. The ironing board may then be drawn up.- wardly and outwardly until the springs 36 engage the guide sleeves 25. The board will then be firmly placed in a horizontal position. serve as a brace as indicated in Fig device is then ready for use.
From the foregoing it is obvious thata simple and inexpensive article of furniture has been provided, the same being sightly in appearance and easily operated, also pro-- viding an article which may be used as a chair or as an ironing board.
It is to be understood that various changes in form, proportion, arrangement and construction of the various parts employed may be ma e by those Skilled in the art, Without The The door 39 is then swung open to.
