8 Claims.

The invention relates to combination extension tables and chairs and an object of the invention is to provide a child's folding chair continuously carried by an extension table having folding legs and to so construct the parts that the folded chair will entirely underlie the table top in the closed position of the table extension and can be readily brought to an open or seating position upon the table being extended and with the entire table top then available for use.

A further object is to provide a, table having folding legs and a sliding extension portion supporting a folding childs chair and arranged such that the child can be placed in the chair from above, in the open position of the extension portion and the chair can be folded anti held to underlie the table top in the closed position of the extension portion.

A further object is to provide the extension portion with side arms forming convenient arm rests at the sides of the open chair.

A further object is to so mount the folding chair that it can be rocked or swayed when in open position.

A still further object is to arrange the chair parts so that the chair can be easily folded or opened and to provide simple and convenient means for releasably holdingthe folded chair in closed position.

With the above objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:

The stationary portion of the table comprises the top I having the sides and one end thereof secured to the

The table extension portion, generally indicated by the reference number 6, comprises an end rail 1 similar to that 4, opposing similar side rails 8 and 9 permanently secured to and extending from the rail 1, horizontal arm rests l0 and ii secured to the rail 1 and to the side rails 8 and 9 and a spacing and. re-inforcing cross bar i2 connecting the free ends of the arms.

The extension portion is slidabl mounted in relation to the other stationary portion of the table so that the side rails and arm rests thereof adapted to fold transversely of the table and take a position, one underlying the other, and underneath the top I andl to the inner side of the end rail 6.. my well known way of hinging the legs can be employed and any well known releasable angle brace i7 and catch i8 can be used to releasably lock the legs in extended position.

The extension portion of the table is also provided with corner legs i9 and 20 adapted to fold longitudinally of the table and take a position underneath the arm rests and adjacent the inner sides of the rails 8 and 9 and such legs are supplied with angle braces and catches similar to those associated with the former legs.

Means is provided for limiting the outward travel of the extension portion 6, such being herein shown as stop plates 2! secured to the under edges of the

2 and 3, such plates being engaged by countersunk catches 22 secured to the under sides of the side rails 8 and 8. The plates 2| underlie the rails 8 and 8 and serve also to reinforce the table against downward buckling in the extended position thereof.

It will be observed that'when the tableis extended there is an open space 23 bounded by the side arms, the end rail 1 and the table top and this opening provides access to the chair from above, as later apparent and also supplies a storage space for a portion of the chair back when the table is in non-extended position.

The chair comprises a sectional back 24, a seat 25, a leg rest 28 and a foot rest 21, hinges 28, 29 and being utilized to pivotally connect such parts together. The sections 3! and 32 of the chair back are connected by rear hinges 33.

All the hinges are so arrangedthat the several parts can fold, one underneath the other and take a position as best shown in Fig. 2. The upper section of the chair back is supplied adjacent its lower end with a pair of horizontally extending aligned pins 34 which are slidably received in horizontal slots 35 provided in side plates or guides 36 secured to the inner (opposing) sides of the side arms. In this way the back as a whole can be slid forwardly or backwardly in the opening 23 and can be rocked on the pins if desired.

A pair of stop bars 31 and 38 are pivotally secured to the lower section of the chair back,

at the rear, and these when upturned, as shown in dotted outline in Fig. l serve to prevent the back swinging of the upper section in relation to the lower.

, In the open or unfolded position of the chair, the pins 34 in the back ends or the slots support the back 24 and the forward end of the seat is supported by similar hangers 39 having their upper ends pivotally attached at 40 to the under sides of the side arms l and H and their lower ends outturned at 39' and slidably received by "stop strip which engages thefolded chair back as will be later apparent.

Assuming that the table is extended and that the chair is in the open position (as shown in Fig. l) the operation of folding the chair and closing the table is as follows: one releases the brace bar from the slot 41 and then folds the foot rest against the front face of the leg rest and the .leg rest against the underside of the seat and then after having slid the pins 34 ahead in the slots, the seat is folded against the front side of the up'swung lower section of the chair back and the u'ppersection of the chair back is swung down to engage the stop bar 52, it being understood that the stop bars 31 and 38 are brought to their horizontal position before this latter operation can be accomplished. The above manipulation brings the several latter parts to the position shown in Fig. 2 and when brought to this position they are held there by swinging the catch 48 in to underlie the foot rest as best shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. Here it will be particularly observed that the uppersection of the chair back lies in the space between the side arms. During the folding operation the hangers 39 swing on their pivots and slide in the guides 4i. When the folding operation has been completed the brace bar is swung upwardly to a position such as shown in Fig. 2 where it is held by friction.

The leg rest is held in a position substantially at right angles to the seat by a brace bar bent to provide side arms 43 and 44 connected by a cross portion 45, the side arms being pivotally connected to the sides of the seat at 46 and the portion being received within a cross slot 41 formed in the rear of the leg rest. The hinge 30 is placed somewhat up from the lower end of the leg rest so that the foot rest is held in a horizontal position by contact with the leg rest as shown in Fig. l.

A catch 48 is supplied to hold the folded or collapsed seat in position, such. catch being of an L-shape and being pivotally attached at 49 to the under side of the arm l0. By observing Fig. 5 it will be seen that this catch is mounted to swing angularly outwardly in order to allow it to clear the folded chair parts.- Suitable means, such as a rubber buffer 50 can be used to hold the catch in a not in use or'idle position. Further owing to the manner in which the chair is suspended, the child can rock or sway the chair if he desires, as the chair can pivot on the pins 34, there being sufficient clearance between the back of the chair and the strip 53 to permit of this, it being understood that at such time the pins are in the rearends of the slots 35.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. In combination, a table having a top carrying stationary portion and an extension portion having a top opening therein and both portionsprovided with folding legs and a foldable chair carried by the extension portion and accessible through the said opening in the extended position of the extension and adapted to take a folded position underlying the table top in the closed position of the extension.

2. In combination, a stationary table portion provided with a top and a pair of folding legs, an extension portion slidable towards and away from the top and provided with a pair of folding legs and an open centre, a folding chair carried by the extension and accessible for seating purposes through the said opening and adapted to take a folded position underlying the table top in the closed position of the extension.

3. In combination, a table top provided with side rails and fitted with a pair of folding legs, an extension portion embodying connected side rails slidably associated with the former rails and having a pair of folding legs, a folding chair between the side rails of the extension and carried by the said extension portion, said chair being foldable to a position'underlying the table top in-the closed position of the extension portion.

4. In combination, a table top provided with side rails and fitted with a pair of folding legs, an extension portion embodying connected side rails slidably associated with the former rails, a pair of folding legs secured to the latter rails and spaced arm rests secure to the inner sides of the extensions side rails and a folding chair accessible for seating purposes through the space aforesaid and carried by the extension'side rails and foldable to a position underlying the table top in the closed position of the extension portion.

5. The combination with a stationary table top portion, having folding legs, of an extension carried by the inner sides of the arm rests, a seat pivoted'to the back and links connected to the seat and arm rests.

6. The combination with a stationary table top portion having folding legs, of an extension portion slidable towards and away from the stationary portion and presenting opposing spaced arm rests and a folding chair within the space having a sectional hinged back with one of the sections pivotally and slidably carried by the inner sides of the arm rests a seat pivoted to the back and links connected to the seat and arm rests.

7. The combination with a stationary table top portion having folding legs, of an extension portion slidable towards and away from the stationary portion and presenting opposing spaced arm rests and a folding chair having the back thereof formed from upper and lower hingedly connected sections and the upper section slidably and pivotally carried by the inner sides of the arm rests a seat pivoted to the back and links connected to the seat and arm rests.

8. The device as claimed in claim 7 wherein the chair back hinged sections are prevented from closing rearwardly by pivoted stop bars attached to one of the sections and engageable with the other of the sections.
