Description

July 25, 1950 P. w. SHULMAN COMBINED HEADBOARD AND SUPPORT Filed Mar ch 18, 19
java/2Z0? PAULINE W. SHULMAN 25 COMBINED 'HEADBOARD AND SUPPORT I I lauline wnshulman, Hartford,
This invention relates to supports and more particularly to a support which may be folded from or retracted into a piece of furniture as a bed or chair.
It is an object of this invention to provide a support which may be extended from the head of a bed or back of a chair to support the arms of a person sitting in the bed or chair.
Another object of this invention is to provide a support, which in the retracted position thereof is adapted to form a part of and be concealed in the back of the piece of furniture to which the support is attached, and in the extended position to provide a support for a person in a normal sitting-up position in order to minimize eye strain and relieve strains on the spinal column of the person while reading or working.
Still another object of this invention is to provide an arm support, retractable into the back of a bed, which in the retracted position displays an upholstered surface similar to the upholstery of the bed so that the presence of such support is not readily discernable.
A further object of this invention is to provide an arm support retractable into the back of a bed and so formed whereby a legless tray may be telescopically supported therefrom.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a bed headboard formed with folding arm supports therein and a legless tray to be supported from the arm supports.
To the foregoing objects, and others which may hereinafter more fully appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed head constructed according to an embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a detail section taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is aperspective view of the bed tray and section of this support therefor.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the head of the bed with the arms in retracted position.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral I0 designates generally a bed head board constructed according to an embodiment of this invention. There are secured between the upper cross member I I and lower cross member I2 pairs ::Application March 18,1946,Serial No.655,1g ZCIaimg, (C1 5 '32)' irooves IS .in the head board. I cwsu mrti members "5' are fastened to theiback panel, ll of, the bed head by hinges l8 between each of the pairs of boards 14 and the supports [6 are of such length to reach the top of the bed head when in the folded or retracted position. Horizontal stops or bracing members l9 are fixed into notches between the boards 14 midway along the length of the boards IQ for supporting or bracing the supporting members I'G in their opened or unfolded position.
Each of the members 16 is formed with a downwardly opening T-shaped slot 20 extending along the length thereof to provide for holding a tray 2|, which may be attached thereto.
A serving tray 2| having supporting arms 22 is provided for attachment to the supporting arms 16 on the back panel. The arms 22 are formed of T-shaped members which are adapted to telescopically engage in the grooves or slots 20 for supporting the tray 2! from the unfolded arms or supports I6. The tray 2| is adapted to be used only when the supports l6 are extended and may be readily removed when the tray is not required.
The supports [-6 are particularly adapted to support a person sitting in bed to provide a comfortable support while eating, reading or working and of vertical bracing boards [4 forming guides or may be used with or without the tray attachment.
The lower sides of the supports l6 may be covered with upholstery, as 23, so that the arms it are not outstandingly apparent when in the folded position, but rather match and complete the upholstered appearance of the bed or chair 24 in which this device is installed.
The exact configuration illustrated is regarded as the optimum, but some of the desirable results inherent in this disclosure may be obtained by various slight modifications including some departure from the exact configuration shown, and it is therefore requested that the scope of the invention should be regarded as limited only by the terms of the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a combined head board and serving tray, serving tray supporting arms hingedly mounted on said head board, bracing members on said head board on opposite sides of each of said hinged arms between which said arms are adapted to be concealed in the raised position thereof, said arms formed with longitudinal openings opening at one end thereof, and fixed arms on said serving tray slidably engaging in the openings of said hinged supporting arms for removably supporting said serving tray on said head board in the extended position of said hin ed arms.
2. In the combination of a head board and serving tray, serving tray supporting arms hingediy mounted on said head board, bracing members on said head board on opposite sides of each of said arms between which said arms are adapted to be ooncealingly disposed in the raised position of said arms, each of said arms formed with a downwardly opening longitudinal T-slot and opening from the end opposite the hinge, said tray having T-shaped fixed arms siidably engaging in said slots whereby said tray is slidably and hingedly supported on said head board, and stop members fixed between said bracing members engageable with said hinged arms for limiting the downward swinging thereof.
