To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ENNIE DRAWE, residing at Marine City, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Invalid-Rest, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is in the nature of an invalidrest adapted for use on beds to support the patient in an upright position; and such invention primarily has for its object to provide a rest of this kind of a simple and economical construction which can be easily set in position for use or be folded up in a compact form.

With other objects in view, which will hereinafter appear, theinvention consists in an invalid-rest embodying the peculiar` construction and novel arrangement of parts, such as will be first described in detail and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view illustrating my device as in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the rest open to its operative position. Fig. 3 is an inverted View of the rest folded.

Referring to the drawings, in which like namerals indicate like parts in all the figures, l indicates a bottom frame, which has longitudinal rack members 2 for a purpose presently explained, and it has its front edge n hinged to a rest-frame 3, which is of a slightlygreater width than the bottom frame and is held spaced apart therefrom, so that when the parts are folded together such bottom frame will fold within the rest-frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. To hold the restframe 3 spaced apart, the same has buttons, which are disposed between the lower end of the said rest-frame and the bottom frame, as shown.

To provide for swinging the frame 3 freely rearward to the desired inclined position and for supporting it in such position, the same is provided with a hinge-bail 5, the lower end ofwhich is adapted to engage the rack members 2 of the bottom frame, asclearly shown in Fig. 2, it being obvious that the incline of lframe 3 can be readily adjusted by moving the bail 5 on the rack members as desired.

' The front of the frame 3 may be in the nature of canvas, cane, cloth, leather, or inflated rubber or other soft material for the purpose of preventing bed sores, the elasticity of the cushion adjusting itself to the body without causing friction, soreness, or undue pressure on any part of the body resting on said cushion.

The side members of the frame 3 are provided with longitudinal slots 7 to receive the set-screws S, which also pass through the supporting-arms 9, which extend forward from the rest-frame and have racks l0 on their inner faces, such arms being supported in the desired inclined position by means of a wire bail comprising the side arms 1l and the cross member l2, which member is curved inward, so as not to interfere with the patients hips or seat. y

The wire bail ll has angle portions which pass through the ends of the supportingframe and the bottom frame and form hinged joints therefor.

13 indicates a supporting-frame which consists of a front or cross member proper and the side rods or wires 14, which are adj uste ably connected at 'their forward ends to the under side of the cross member 13a and are held to slide in loops l5 on the side arms 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, by reference to which it will be seen that the side arms eX-- tend out a sufficient distance to also form supporting members for the cross member 132L of the support, which is held adj ustably on such side arms, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the wire members being 'passed through loops on the side arms, as clearly shown.

By connecting the supporting member to the body of the rest in the manner shown it is obvious that the same can be quickly removed or placed in position, as may begrequired, thereby providing for adjusting the rest to the patient.

By providing the rest-frame with longitudinal slots in its side members it is obvious that the supporting-frame can be adjusted vertically by simply loosening the thumb-nuts and hinge by pushing the said frame in or out upon the side arms 9.

By connecting the se'veral parts as shown it is manifest that the rest-frame can be folded down upon and over the bottom frame and the side arms 9 over the edges of the restframe, with its cross member 13 held under the ends of the rest and bottom frame, such cross member holding the said frames locked from separating, it being obvious that before the rest can be set up the cross member 13n must be slid out sufficient to swing over the upper end of the rest and supporting frame.

When the parts are folded up in the manner stated,L the entire device Will be held in a compact form, as shown in Fig. 3.

In using the rest the bottom frame is set on the bed at the rear of the patient and the rest-frame raised to the incline desired. The side arms 9 are then adjusted to the proper height to suit the patient, after which the food-frame is slid in place upon the said arms.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the advantages and complete construction of my invention Will be readily apparent. The same can be quickly set in place on the bed and adjusted to suit the desired incline required by the patient, While the table can be used or not, as may be desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. ,In an invalid-rest, comprising a bottom frame 1, a rest-frame 3, of greater Width than the bottom frame, means for supporting such frame at different inclines, side arms vertically adjusted to the said rest-frame, and a Wire bail having portions extended through the meeting ends of the rest and the bottom frame and having vertical members adapted to form supports, of the side arms and a foodrest held upon such side arms, all being arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.

2. The combination with the bottom frame 1, having rack members 2, at the inner edges thereof, the hinge-frame of a greater Width than the bottom 1, having side members adapted to close down over the sides and end of the bottom member, said side members having vertical slots, and the bail 5 hinged to the frame to engage the racks 2 of the side arms 9 having their inner ends connected to the rest-frame provided with racks on their under faces and eyes or loops, a Wire bail A having portions extended through the meeting ends of the bottom and rest frame to form hinges therefor, and having vertical members to engage the racks of the side arms 9, and a food-rest consisting of a cross member adapted to rest upon the said side arms 9, and having Wirek side extensions to t the loops on such arms 9, all being arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.

3. An invalid-rest, comprising a bottom frame 1, having racks 2, a rest-frame 3 of greater Width than the bottom frame hinged to such bottom frame and held spaced apart therefrom, means for holding such rest-frame to its different inclines, a cross-bail 11 having portions extended through the bottom and the rest frame to form hinged members therefor, and vertical members, arms 9 vertically adjustable on and connected to the rest-frame and sides,and a food-supportin g table adapted to be supported longitudinally on such arms 9, all being arranged substantially as shown and described.
