FRANK HADLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BED ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 12, 1911.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912. Serial No. 620,542.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HADLEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tray or table attachments for beds, the object of the invention being to provide an attachment of this character for the use of invalids or other occupants of a bed.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tray or table of the class described which shall be capable of vertical, lateral and angular adjustment.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of a bed embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of an arm and tray support, the tray being removed, Fig. 3 is a. side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2, the tray being shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a portion of the tray, Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the tray sup port, the tray being shown in vertical section, and Fig. 6 is a detail top plan view of a clamp to which the above-named arm is hinged.
The preferred form of construct-ion of my invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, comprises a pair of flexible metallic clamps 1 which are detachably secured to a bed post 1 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. Each clamp 1 is provided with a large opening for engagement with the bed post and with a smaller opening or eye 2 for the reception of a hinge-rod 3, the latter having heads 4 for retaining the same in position. The eyes 2 are formed integral with the main portion of the clamps 1, there being contiguous intermediate portions 5 which are riveted together as shown in detail in Fig. 6. Each clamp 1 comprises a flexible ring portion having substantially radial extremities 6 which are perforated and threaded to receive a locking screw 7, the construction being such that the clamp will readily adapt itself to a variety of sizes of bed posts. The clamps 1 are detachably secured to the bed post 1, as aforesaid, and the same may be also secured in any desired vertical position thereon the only limitation to the vertical adjustment being the available length of any particular bed post to which the clamps are secured. The hinge-rod 3 is secured rigidly in position, as shown in Fig. 1, and hinge eyelets 8 are engaged with said hinge-rod so as to move freely thereon for a purpose to be presently described. The eyes 8 may be ad justed to any desired vertical position by means of a vertical adjustable block 9, an adjusting screw 10 for impinging the rod 3 being provided in said block. The hinge eyes 8 project from a vertically disposed member 11 forming a part of a horizontally swinging arm, the arm members 11 and 12 being reinforced by a brace 13 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. At the free extremity of the swinging arm an extension 14 is provided, a rivet 15 securing said extension in position and also the brace 13 in rigid relation with the arm. At the free extremity of the arm, a hinge 16 is provided by means of which a transversely disposed slotted member 17 is secured for angular adjustment. In order to secure any desired adjustment of the member 17, a knurled screw 18 is provided and passed through the outer end of the extension 14, the upper extremity of said screw abutting the under surface of the member 17 as illustrated in Fig. 3. By turning the screw 18, any desired adjustment of the member 17 may be effected. Mounted upon the slotted member 17 is an elongated slotted member 19 the slot 20 of which is in registration with the slot 21 of the member 14, this construction being clearly shown in Fig. 2. In order to secure the members 17 and 19 together and to pro vide for a relative longitudinal adjustment thereof, a bolt 22 passing through the slots extremity of the slotted member 19, an upwardly and inwardly extending lip 25 is provided, the inwardly extending portions of the lips being adapted to engage over opposite sides 26 of the tray 2a. The frictional contact of the upper edges of the sides 26 with the under surface of the lips 25 is suflicient to secure the tray 24 in any adjusted position, the weight which is usually imposed upon said tray not being sufiicient to move it out of position. In order that the tray 24 may slide without too great a resistance over the tray support 19, a pair of transversely disposed guide grooves 27 are provided in said tray support, there being struck up ridges 28 formed in said tray for engagement with said grooves. The ridges 28 not only serve as a guide in moving the tray 24:, but the same form a substantial reinforcement.
A tray or table bed adjustment of the construction set forth is especially adapted for use in hospitals for facilitating the work of nurses and to add to the comfort and convenience of the patients. The tray may be used for the serving of food or for reading and writing purposes as described.
While I have illustrated the preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construc tion as set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tray attachment for beds comprising a vertical rod detachably secured in spaced relation to a bed post, a horizontally swinging arm hinged to said rod, means for ver tically adjusting said arm, a tray support provided at the free extremity of said arm, a demountable tray provided on said tray support, and means for horizontal and angular adjustment of said tray comprising an extension of said arm, a transversely disposed slotted member hinged to the extremity of said arm, a screw passed through said extension and so arranged as to abut the under surface of said member for changing the angular adjustment thereof, an elongated slotted member mounted on said firstnamed slotted member so that the slots thereof are in registration, a bolt passed through said slots, and a tray mounted on said elongated slotted member, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a bed, of a vertical hinge-rod detachably connected with a post of the bed, a horizontally swinging arm hinged to said rod, means for vertically adjusting said arm, a short horizontally disposed slotted member hinged to the free extremity of said arm, an extension secured to said arm at the free extremity thereof and disposed under said slotted member, a screw having a knurled head passed through said extension and abutting said slotted member for securing an angular adjustment thereof, an elongated slotted member mounted on said short slotted member so that the slots thereof are in registration, a locking bolt passed through said slots, a lip formed at each end of said elongated member, and a tray arranged on said elongated member so that opposite edges thereof engage said lips, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, FRANK HADLEY.
