Patented were. T, tuft,
application filed august 26, 1916. serial 1t 0. 1163M.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Josnrn G. GAvnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Humphrey, in the county of-lPlatte and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable tables as used in connection with beds, couches and the like, the tables being of such type as to permit of use for reading, writing and other like purposes.
The principal object of the invention 1s to provide a table which may be attached to the frame of an ordinary bed and so disposed that it may be adjusted to any desired height or angle, and which may be inverted so that a book or paper held thereon is conveniently maintained so as to be read by a party recumbent upon the bed.
A further object is to provide means by which the table may be disposed below the bed when not in use with entire ease, the
parts all being simple in construction and readily adjusted.
These and other objects are attained by the novel design, construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forminga material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure l is a partial perspective view showing an embodiment of the apparatus and indicating one of its positions.
Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view showing the apparatus in another position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view in detail of the apparatus, the table or plate being in an erect position.
Fig. t is a like view showing the table in a horizontal position.
Fig. 5 is another perspective view showing the table folded out of the-way.
Fig. 6 is a perspective top plan view of the table, indicating the method of attaching a book or paper, and
Fig. 7 is a perspective fragmental view showing one of theadjustable brackets.
Tn views showing embodiments of the invention, the longitudinal side frame 10 of the bed has secured upon it a pendant bracket 11 having pivotally attached an arm 12, extending from a bracket 14, formed with the front extending plate 15 and a vertical plate 16 at right angles thereto, the
same connecting with lateral members 1'3 containing a pivot 19, by means of which the tubular arm 20 is hingedly engaged.
The lower end of this arm 20 has an ofiset clip 41, pivoted to it by the pin 42., on which it may be turned to operate as a locking de vice, adapted to engage with the upper edge of the plate 16, by means of which the arm may be rigidly secured in an erect posiion.
Telescopically engaged within the arm or post 20 is a rod 21 adapted to be rigidly clamped within the arm by means of the set screw 22 whereby it may be held when in an adjusted position.
At the outer end of the rod 21 is a universal joint 23 which may be adjustably secured by means of the clamp screw 24 and from the joint extends an arm 25 fastened to the table 26 by rivets, screws or otherwise so that the table is rigid with it.
On the opposite side of the table 26, along one edge thereof is a rib 27 to which is secured a longitudinal rod 28, a similar rod 30 being fastened to the opposite edge of the plate in a secure manner.
Hingedly engaged with the rod 30 are a plurality of flexible metallic strips 32, the same being formed at their opposite ends with spring catches 33, adapted to engage with the rod 28' in such a manner as to hold the book or paper disposed on the surface of table 26 in such position that it may be read by a person in a recumbent position on the bed with entire ease.
This is accomplished by partially inverting the table 26 by means of the universal joint 23, the table being held at a desired height by the telescopic rod and arm 20 and 21.
Thus it will be seen that a practical device is provided which will permit of the table being used for the purpose of writing or otherwise, while the occupant on the bed is in a sitting position or that the plate may be so adjusted as to render reading relatively easy while the person is lying extended on the bed surface.
FVhen not in use the arm 20 may be folded over upon the projection 15, and if it be desired, the entire device may be turned upon the pivot, formed with the bracket 11., underneath the bed where it in no wise interferes with the space adjacent to the bed.
Having thus described my invention, what are I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the class described, the combination with a bracket applied to the frame of a bed at the lower side thereof, an arm, pivoted to the bracket, a second bracket carried by said arm, a telescopic post hingedly engaged in said second bracket, means for holding said post vertical, a sup- 10 port upon which said post may rest when in JOSEPH G. GAVER.
