BACK-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,674, dated July 20, 1897. Application filed August 20, 1896. Serial No. 603,802. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH STRETCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BackSupports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to invalid-supports for beds or those devices adapted to hold the person in a sitting or partially-inclined position.

My object is to provide a more simple and cheap as well as comfortable support of the class described, which can be applied to any bed and will be adapted to hold the sick person propped up or supported in a highly-superior manner and may be folded into compact form and out of the way when not in use.

The invent-ion consists of certain novel features and combinations of parts appearing more fully hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, full lines showing the support folded and dotted lines in use; and Fig. 2, a view looking toward the head board of the bed, showing the support folded and portions of the fabric covering the frame being broken away to disclose the construction of the latter.

The numerals l and 2 designate vertical rods, which may be made of any preferred material.

At 3 is shown a bracket which is secured to the headboard of the bed by fastening devices l and is provided with a bifurcated projection 5.

The numeral 6 designates a double arm comprising two converging pieces that are formed into a tongue, as at 7, which is received in the bifurcated projection 5.

The numeral 8 designates a thumb-screw which passes through the projection and the tongue, and by means of this screw the support can be held in any desired position. Thumb-screws 9 and 10 are employed, and they pass through the end portion of the double arm and the bars 1 and 2 of the frame, so that the latter can be clamped at any desired angle.

The numeral 11 designates a piece of canvas which is stretched over the arm and the pieces of the frame, being connected thereto in any desired manner.

My improved support can be adjusted in any desired manner to make it comfortable for the invalid and support the latter in a highly-superior n1anner,while it can be folded up against the head-board and out of the way when not in use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The herein-described invalids support, the same comprising a frame or back, a bracket connected to the head-board of a bed and provided with cars, a substantially V-shaped arm having a portion fitted in between the ears, a clamping-screw passing through said ears and the apex of the V-shaped arm and constitutin g a pivot for the latter, and additional clamping screws passing through the diverged ends of the arm and into the frame or back, said parts being so disposed and related that any inclination can be given the arm in relation to the bed, said back or frame can be inelined ,and the arm and back clamped in adjusted position, for said device is swung up vertically against the head-board and secured in folded arrangement.
