GEORGE A. ALLEN, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
BEDCLOTHES-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1905.
Application filed April 20, 1901. Serial No. 56,719.
To all whom, it may concern;
Be it knownthat I, GEORGE A. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedclothes-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which a form a part of this specification.
My invention pertains to bedclothes fasteners, and has reference more especially to a means for securing such devices in place. It is frequently convenient to fasten devices of this class to the strips forming a framework of the springs or some other part of the bed; but as such strips in some cases have their flat sides uppermost and in other cases their edges uppermost it has been found difficult to secure the fastener thereto under both conditions and retain the device in an upright position, as is desirable in all cases. I seek in my invention to provide a means wherebysuch attachment can be made to any part of the frame of the bed or to a strip in either of said positions without rendering the instrument itself inoperative.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device, showing one method of attachment thereof. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing another method of attachment thereof.
Similar characters refer to similar parts in both figures.
1 represents one end of a. strip forming part of a (frame adapted to support the springs of a be 2 is the end of a cross-piece, connected with the strip 1. Secured to the cross-piece 2, Fig. 1, is a clamp 3, provided with a jaw 4 and support 5, in the end of which is seated the thumb screw 6. On the back of the clamp 3 is formed an ear 7, to which is pivotally secured, as at a, the standard 8, provided at its upper end with the jaw 9. The standard 8 is also provided with an arm 10, integral therewith. In other words, this member of the fastenin device is of an L shape, pivoted at its ang e to the clamp and having as its short leg the arm 10. Pivoted in the free end of the arm 10 is a standard 11, provided at its upper end with the jaw 12, adapted to engage the jaw 9. By means of the bolt 13 and thumb-screw 14 the jaw 12 is operated adjustably to the aw 9.
I understand the construction of the aws 9 and 12 and the method of operating the same to be old and claim nothing thereon except so far as they are connected with other features of my device.
In Fig. 2 my invention is shown secured to the upper edge of the strip 1, the back of the clamp 3 furnishing a support for the lower end of the fastener proper. It is apparent that in either mode of securing the clamp to the frame the standards 8 and 11 are retained in an upright position, in which position it is desirable to have them for the proper operation of the device.
If desired, two ears 7 can be used, the standard 8 being pivoted between the same, or the one ear can be used, and, if desired, the lower end of the standard 8 may be recessed to receive the same.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a bedclothes-fastener, a clothes-clamp comprising a pair of jaw members suitably pivoted together and provided with means for drawing them together, one of said members being of an angular shape, and a U- shaped screw-clamp having an ear on its back midway between its bends, said ear constituting a pivotal support for the clothes-clamp by having the angular member pivoted thereto at its angle, whereby the clothesclamp may extend upwardly whether the screw-clamp is secured in an upright position or in a horizontal position and the engagement of the angular member with the screwclamp in the former position prevents the clothes-clamp swinging inwardly beyond its upright position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. A. ALLEN.
Witnesses:
I. L. WEAVER, F. O. STUBBE.
