CORN ER-CLAM Pl FOR BEDSTEADS.
SPEGIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent 130,743,964, dated November 10, 1903.
Application filed January 24. 1903.
To a/ZZ wir/0m it may concern/s Be it known that I, FRED A. VVEIR, a citiin the county of Kendall and State of Illinois, haveinventedanew and useful Corner-Clamp for Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a clamp, and more particularly to a corner clamp or fastening for metallic bedsteads used to connect the side rails or springs to the .corner-posts, and has for its object to provide a simple inexpensive device of this character formed of two jaws or members detachably secured together and adapted to engage the uprights or posts and securely clamp the side rails to the posts.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sectional clamp in which the two jaws or members embrace the corner-post and are rigidly secured together, thus preventing any lost motion and producing a bedstead-frame possessing absolute rigidity and obviating any tendency of the bed to wabble.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for preventing any turning movement of the clamp members on the post.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the clamp applied to a bedpost. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of the clamping members detached. Y
Similar numerals'of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates the corner-post of a metallic bedstead. This post is, as usual, formed of a section A of tubing and is engaged by the clamp 2 at the end of the'side rail 3. To the post is secured a metallic sleeve 4, which is held in place by transverse pins 5, projecting from the post and entering semicircular or other recesses 6 at the top and bottom ofthe sleeve, the latterV being thus held from both rotative and longitudinal movement.
Serial No. 140,434. (No model.)
The clamp 2, which may be formed of castiron or other suitable material, consists of two jaws or members 7 and 8, detachably secured together and adapted to em brace the post and secure the side rals`3 rigidly thereto. The jaw 7 consists of a casting having a Wing or plate 9,provided with longitudinally-disposed ribs or flanges 10, deliniug a recess or socket for the reception of the side rail 3, which is secured thereto in any suitable manner, as
half-sockets 17, corresponding tothe sockets of the jaws 7, and one end of each jaw 8 is provided with a lug V18, which fits within the opening 15 of the ear 1/1, the other end thereof being provided with an aperture 19, adapted to receive the threaded lug 16 on the jaw 7 and to which it is clamped by means of a thumb-nut 20'. The inner side of the arm 12 and the upper side of the'arrn 13 are provided, respectively, with the semicireular recesses or sockets 21, adapted to receive the pins 5, the sleeve forming a spacing-block for the arms and preventing vertical movement in either direction. The pins prevent the independent rotative movement of the post and in some cases may be used Without the sleeve, although the latter is preferred in order that the jaws may have an extensive supporting-surface. The inner faces of the sockets are provided with corrugations which bite on the outer periphery of the post and form an additional means for holding the post rigidly Within the clamp.
'Various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- 1. In a corner-clam p for bedsteads, the com- IOC bination with a post, of a sleeve secured to the post, a pair of jaws detachably secured together, one of said jaws provided with longitudinally-spaced parallel arms having halfsockets formed thereon, and the other jaw provided with corresponding half-sockets detachably secured thereto, piu-receiving recesses in one of the jaws, and a pin carried by the sleeve and adapted to enter said recesses.
2. In acorner-clamp for bedsteads, the combination with a post, of a sleeve secured to the post, a pair of jaws detachably secured adapted to t in the perforations in the ears, and means carried by one of the jaws for clamping the jaws to a post.
4. In a corner-clamp for bedsteads, the combination with a post, of a pair of jaws detachably secured thereto and having pin-receiving recesses, a sleeve secured to the post, and a pin carried by the sleeve and adapted to enter said recesses.
5. In a corner-clamp for bedsteads, the combination with a post, of a pair of jaws detachably secured thereto, one of said. jaws provided With parallel arms having post-receiving sockets and the other jaw provided with corresponding sockets and hingedly connected thereto,.pinreceiving recesses in one of the jaws, a sleeve secured to the post, and a pin carried by the sleeve adapted to enter said recesses.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED A. WEIR.
