Application filed March 6, 1913. Serial N 0. 752,454.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, CHRISTIAN E. I-IAY, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cataldo, in the county of Kootenai and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which,
the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. ,f
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in beds, and the object of my invention is to provide a bed stead comprising but three members, a head} "section, foot section and a mattress supporting section, together with certain novel features for securing themattress supportlng member to the side rails.
Vith theseand other 'objects in view, the v present invention consists in the combinamy invention. sectlonal view through ,Fig. 1. F 1g. 3, shows tion and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claim, it being further understood that changes in. the spe oific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1, shows a plan view of a bedstead constructed according to Fig. 2, shows a lengthwise an enlarged fragmentary detail disclosing the arrangement of securing the head cross bar at one end. 'Fig. 4, shows a section on line 4, 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a section on line 5, 5 of Fig. 3. I
In my present invention I simplify the construction of a bedstead, in that I employ three distinct members, each capable of expeditious and accurateadjustment in posisition, the whole providing a secure bed structure, of neat appearance, and capable of being easily assembled and readily handled. I Y
In the drawings the numerals 11, 11 indicate the posts of the head section, which give support to the'head panel 12. Each head post ll, is provided with a slot arranged to receive the hook members 15, of suitable side rails 10. These hook members are arranged to engage suitable pins 16, shown in Fig. 4, as is usual in bed construc tion.
In my invention Iemploy two similar side rails 10, 10. Near these foot ends each rail Specification of Letters Patent. I r Patented Sepng, 1913,
has two hooks similar to those shown in Fig. i
4, to-engage suitable pins within thev foot posts 13, these. posts being connected'by means of a suitable panel 14.
The two side rails 10, are permanently secured to the foot and head cross bars supportingthe bed springs 25.
The bed springs 25, at the foot end, aresecured to an angle bar 24 which has its ends 27, turned at right angles and apertured, to
receive the securing screws 28.. The'springs 25 are held to the angle bar 24 by means of the clamp bar 23 this bar being secured by means of suitable rivets 26 as shown in Fig; 1. s
The head of the springs 25, is secured to an'angle bar 24being held thereto by means of the clamping bar 23, which is secured to the angle bar 24 by means of the rivets 26.
From the foregoing-it will be understood that the springs 25 are clamped at opposite ends betweent-wo angle bars and two clamping bars.
The clamping bar '23 as shown in Fig. 3 is Secured to the rails 10 near the head end is a supporting bracket comprising the base flange 18, and the upstanding beak hook 19, which forms a socket as shown at 21, in Fig. 4. Extending at right angles from the base flange 18, is the securing fiange 17, which has suitable openings arranged to receive the securing screws 17.
In shipping the bedstead from the factory to the point where the bedstead is to be as- :sembled, the springs 25 may be coiled upon oneof the angle bars 24 or 24, to make a compact coil. The side rails are packed together while the foot section 14 is packed against the head section 12.v VVhenthe bedstead is to be set up the operator screws the flanges -27 to the side rail 10. The'brack-' ets supporting the head cross bar are fixed to the side rails. In securing the head bar 24, to the side rails, the operator would first secure the side rails 10, to the head and foot sections. The bar-24, is then placed upon and forced downward under pressure so that the ear 22, will ride into the slot or socket 21. After the cars 21, are in place the springs will be taut, and the headcross bar 24 cannot be displaced. After the head bar 24 is in position, in order to securely fix the 80 provided with the outstanding cars 22 pro- I I the inclined edge 20, of the beak book 19,
same to the'side rails, I employ the bolts 26 whichpass through the openings within the clamping bar 23 through the springs 25 and the bar 2% and the base flange 18 being se:
cured by means of suitable bolts 26; The
springs 25 are thus securely fastened to the side rails 10, and can then be easily moved-so that I providea bed including butthree sections, a spring section, a head section and a foot section a5 escribed. The clamp bar 23'. is secured to the head bar 24, by means of r the rivets 26'.
with ease, accuracy and despatch.
-Having thus described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patentis;
Thecombination in a bedstead of twoside rails, a foot cross bar having its ends secured to said side rails near one end, bed sprlngs secured at one'end to said cross bar,
- a hea'dcross bar having a bolt opening near each end secured to the bedstead opposite end of said bed springs, a clamping bar securing said springs to said last mentioned cross bar having an outstanding ear and a bolt opening near each end, a bracket secured near the remaining end of each side rail having a bolt opening and provided with an upstanding beak hook, said ears arranged to slide over and below said hooks andbolts passing through said bolt openings to secure said cross bar and head bar to saidbra'ckets, as and in the manner set forth. r 7 In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
