Description

A. THIELE.
READING STAND.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 30, 1905.
PATENTED NOV. 6, 1906.
RRIS PETER, co, WASHINGTON, n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
READING-STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1906.
Application filed March 30, 1905. Serial No. 252,948.
To all wlwmit nuty concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLF THIELE, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of 87 Augsburgerstrasse, Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony, GermanEmpire, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Reading-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a portable readingstand or book-holder, more especially adapted for the use of persons when sitting or reclining.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure-1 is a front elevation of the new stand. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail View, being a section on the line A A of Fig. ,1. Fig. 4 is a detail view, being a section on the line B B of Fig. 2.
a is an upright or pillar having a heavy foot a of any suitable form. If desired, the foot may be provided with one or more pro jecting bars to render the apparatus still more stable. The pillar a is wholly or partly hollow, so that it may receive at the top the vertical limb of a bent arm 0, which can be adjusted at any desired height in the pillar a by means of a screw and wing-nut a The actual book-holder is horizontally adjustable on the arm 0 and consists of a frame of vertical bars (I and cross-bars d (P, the former of which cross-bars have each a feather (i which engages in a corresponding groove in the cooperating bar (1 as shown in Fig. 3. In this manner the holder can be rendered wider or narrower, as may be necessary.
f represents angular clamps adjustably attached to the side of the end bars (1 by means of a screw 7', engaging in a slot f, so that the clamps may be adjusted to suit the thickness of the book. These clamps are acted upon by springs 6. Several of these clamps of different sizes may be provided, so that volumes of various dimensions may be accommodated.
g represents springs adapted to assist in holding down the leaves of the book. At the bottom of the holder suitable supportingledges h are furnished. The central one is provided with a pin i, adapted to be inserted into the back of the opened book, so that the latter is prevented from getting displaced.
7c is a bracket through the eye of which the arm 0 passes. The bracket is fixed in posi tion on the arm 0 by means of the thumb screw Z and is fixed to the book-holder by means of the pin 7c mis a pin extending from the bracket 7c and passing through a slotted guide-plate n, on the other side of which it is provided with a wing-nut 0. In this manner the book-holder can be turned round on the pivot is, so as to lie at an angle to suit, for instance, the position of a reclining person.
It is obvious that I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details of the construction shown, as these may be greatly varied without departure from the essential features of my invention. In particular the supporting means a may be of any suitable nature, so long as it admits of vertical adjustment of the actual holder. The fasteningclamps and springs and the like may likewise be of other appropriate description, and also, for instance, the number and form of the bars of the holding-frame may be other than illustrated.
From the above description it will be seen that the new book-holder can be adjusted both vertically and horizontally and can also be given a rotary movement. Furthermore, it can be extended or contracted in lateral direction to suit books of various sizes, while the book can be firmly held in the desired position by means of the clamps and other fastenings.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A reading-stand, comprising, in combination, a support, a horizontal arm having a vertical limb adjustably secured in the sup port, a bracket secured with capability of horizontal adjustment on the said arm, and a laterally-extensible book-holder secured to the bracket with capability of rotary motion thereon, substantially as described.
2. A readingstand, comprising, in combination, a support, a horizontal arm having a vertical limb adjustably secured in the sup port, a bracket secured with capability of horizontal adjustment on the said arm, and a laterally-extensible bookholder secured to the bracket with capability of rotary motion thereon, and consisting of vertical bars and extensibly-sliding cross-bars carried thereby, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, this 25th day of February, 1905, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
