GEORGE L. CASE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
BACK FOR STOOLS.
SPECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,685, dated February 18, 1902.
Application filed February 27, 1900. Serial No. 6,664- (No model- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. CASE, of the city of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin,State of Minnesota, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Detachable and Adjustable Backs for Stools, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to stool attachments; and the object of the invention is to provide a back or rest which when applied ,to a stool Will not interfere with the free movement of the back of the person seated on the stool, and therefore be particularly adapted for use in connection with piano-stools.
A further object is to provide a stool back or rest which can be readily adapted or ad justed for persons of different height.
A further object is to provide a stool back or rest that is readily detachable from the stool and adapted to be packed compactly for storing or shipping purposes.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, allas hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of a stool with my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line a 09 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line 410 :0 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 410 m of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line at 00 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 0o (r of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 2 represents the base or leg of the stool, 3 the threaded post or screw adjustable therein, and 4 the seat portion, supported in any suit-able manner upon the top of the post 3.
5 is a hollow arm having lugs 6 at its inner end provided with holes to receive bolts 7, passing through holes in a plate 8 to form a clamp to secure the arm 5 in a horizontal position on the post 3, preferably directly beneath the seat A, to permit said seat to be raised or lowered, as desired. The clamp being adjustable permits the horizontal arm to be secured in any desired position on the post or to be removed entirely, if preferred.
9 is a stud telescoping with the arm 5 and prevented from turning or sliding therein by a clamping-screw 10, provided at the outer end of said arm and engaging a flat surface provided on said stud. A head 11 is provided on the outer end of said stud and has a backwardly-inclined socket, wherein a tube 12 is vertically slidable, said tube having on one side a flattened surface forming a bearing for a follower or plate 13, held in engagement with said surface by a clam ping-screw 14, provided in the head 11. By means of the tele scoping parts 5 and 9 the attachment is rendered horizontally adjustable and may be moved toward or from the stool-seat toadjust the back or rest in the desired position. The tube 12 being vertically adjustable in its socket permits the back supported thereon to be raised or lowered, according to the height of the person using the stool.
At the upper end of the tube 12 I prefer to provide a head 15, having a follower-plate 16 and a clamping-screw 17 to engage said plate and hold it firmly against the flattened surface of a standard 18, that is vertically adj ustable in said tube.
Upon the upper end of the standard 18 I arrange 'a back or rest 19, consisting of a wood or metal plate, as preferred, and having a convex face formed by turning back the ends of the plate, so that they will not interfere in any way with the back of the person seated on the stool. This construction of the back renders the attachment particularly applica ble to piano-stools, Where a free unobstructed movement of the back is desirable.
It will be noted that the device herein described for supporting the back-rest of the stool permits horizontal and vertical adj ustment thereof and that the supporting means can be readily detached from the stool or as easily connected thereto. The device being composed of several parts can be packed in a very small space, which is a desirable feature in shipping or storing.
Various modifications will suggest themselves to any one skilled in the art, and hence I do not wish to be confined to the details of construction herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a stool, having the screw-posts 3 and the seat 4 thereon, of a hollow arm 5 clamped upon said screw-post, a stud 9 slidable in said arm, means for looking said stud therein, a socket provided at the outer end of said stud, a tube 12 vertically slidable therein, means for locking said tube in said socket, a standard 18 telescoping with the upper end of said tube, means for locking said standard in said tube, and a back plate or rest provided on said standard, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a stool having a threaded post or screw and a seat thereon, of a standard having a horizontal portion secured to said screw and an upright portion projecting above said seat, and a plate forming a back or rest secured to said upright portion, said plate being curved with its rounded or convex face toward the front of the stool and its ends inthe rear of the plane of its middle portion, whereby free movement of the back of the person seated on the stool is permitted.
3. The combination, with a stool having a screw-post 3 and a revoluble seat 4 thereon, of a stud 9 supported upon said post and horizontally adjustable, an upright tube 12 adjust-ably supported on the outer end of said arm, a standard 18 telescoping with said tube plate or rest having a convex face provided on said standard, substantially as described.
18 telescoping with said tube, means for locking said standard in said tube and a back plate or rest provided on said standard, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a stool, of a sliding stud supported beneath the seat portion thereof, means for locking said stud, a tube ad justably supported at the outer end of said arm, a support or standard telescoping there- With, and a back plate or rest having a rounded or convex face provided on said standard, substantially as described.
6. The combination, with a stool having a threaded post or screw and a seat thereon, of an arm vertically adjustable on said screw, a
standard carried by said arm, and a back plate or rest provided on said standard, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of February, 1900.
GEORGE L. CASE.
In presence of HENRY A. WHITE, A. 0. PAUL.
