This invention relates to book holders.

The principal-object of the present inven.-' tion is to produce a'bOok holder which will support a book in opened conditionin a manner so that's person in a comfortable reclining position may conveniently read the book.

Another object of the invention is a book holder which serves to support a book'in an opened condition so that the leaves or pages o't-the book will face downwardly at an angle. with the pages or leaves being prevented from turning over by a means which also prevent thebook tromiallling out of the holder body, and-the said' means being operable upon the movement of the holder may to: permit the'pages or leaves of the book to be turnedover'. i

In accordance with the present invention the book holder wil'l' be supported at the desired elevation either upon a supporting stand or upon a portion of a bed so that a person in a reclining position may conveniently read a book supported by the holder. In the drawing the book holder is shown as supported on a stand merely as an example of one manner of use of the book holder. The book holder 10 includes a holder body 11, which may be of any preferred construction and which may be made of any preferred material. In the present instance the holder body 11 consists of a top 12, bottom 13 which constitutes a rest, sides 14: which connect the top 12 andbottom 13, and back members or slats 15. which are. connected to the 'sides14. Attaching means 16 is provided which tiltably supports the body holder 11. In the. present instance the means 16 consists of a yoke 1.7, having an attaching lug 18. The? yoke lihas endfmembers 19 which are connected. respectively as at 20 to the sides M nna thus constitute levers at the opposite sides of the holder body 11. The attaching lug 18' is attached to the member 21 which connects the end. members 19 and carries means in the form of. a wing nut 22, or any other suitable means may be provided for connecting the yoke to a suitable support such asthe support'or stand 23. It will'now be understbod"thatthe holder body 11 may be tilted. to be disposed in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A handle 24' attached to the/bottom I3 is providedfor tilting the body holder 11'. Means in the form of a spring25 is attached as at 26 to the member 210i the yoke 17-, and the opposite end of the spring is held in place by a stud 27 carried by one of the slats 15. Holding members 28. and 29 are employed to extend respectivelv near thetop and. bottom ofthe holder body transversely with respect theretoan'd serve. tor'preventing the pages of the book from turning over,'and also for preventing the book'from falling out of the holder body when the same is in the position shown in Fig. 2. 28 and 29 are movable to different positions simultaneously in response to the tilting movements'otthe holder body 11,'and this is accoinplished by the means presently to be described. At each side of the holder body 11, and. connected tothe end member 19. thereat are arms 30 and 31, one end of each otflthe arms30, and 31 being pivotally connected. as at 32v to the portion of saidend member on lever 19. A bell-crank lever 33 is pivotally connected as at 34 to the arni 30, and the part 35 of said lever adjustably supports the holding member 28. The holding member 28 is adjustable by virtue of a slot 36 in each of the parts 35 into which the opposite ends respectively of the holding member 23 extend. Suitable clamping nuts 37 are employed for maintaining the holding member 28 in the different adjustable positions; there being calibrations 38 on each part 35 to constitute a gauge for insuring the proper horizontal dispositions of the holding 1 e 11 er28, The le er 39 i empl y nd I holder body 11.

In order to make provision for marking the place in the book at which reading was discontinued there is employed a cord 49, one end of which is attached as at to the bottom 13, and the opposite end of the cord is provided with a hook 51 which is releasably engageable with an eye 52 attached to the top 12. The cord 4C9 is used when the book is closed.

It is to be understood that the.invention is not restricted to the precise arrangement of parts shown and described, as details of construction may be modified and rearranged without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

What I claim is- 1. A book holder comprising a holder body for supporting a book in opened condition, means for tiltably supporting the holder body, the holder body being movable to a position in which the pages of the book will face downwardly at an angle, and said holder body being movable to a position in which the pages of the books will face upwardly at an angle, holding members pivotally mounted on the holder body for maintaining the.

book in opened condition and for preventing the pages from turning over and for preventing the book from falling out of the holder body, the holding members being in active position when the holder body is in the first mentioned position, said holding members being in inactive position when the holder body is in the second mentioned position, and means connected to the holding members operable in response to the movement of the holder body for effecting the movement of the holding members to the active and inactive position.

2. A book holder comprising a-holder body for supporting a book in opened condition, attaching means for movably supporting the holder body, holding members for maintaining the book in opened condition and for preventing the pages from turning over and for preventing the book from falling out of the holder body, the holding members being movable to permit the book to be removed from the holder body, and an arm and lever arrangement connected between said attaching means and said holding members for etfecting the movement of the holding members to active and inactive positions in response to the movement of the holder body.
