PORTABLE TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application led March 8, 1905. Serial No. 249,070.
To all uli/1,0m, t nur/*y concern,.-
Beit known that I, JAMES D. CAMFIELD, 'a citizen of the United States, residing at Skilesville, in the county of Muhlenberg and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My present invention relates to improvements in portable tables; and the main ob ject of my invention is the provision of a table which may be readily attached. to a bed to be used by an invalid or which may be se cured to the window-frames, door-frames, or to the side supports of a mantel, where a table with legs could not be very readily used, my table being so constructed as to be easily folded, so as to occupy a very small area of space.
To attain these objects, the invention consists of a table of this character embodying l gitudinal novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my complete device eX- tended, the same being in the position when in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device when folded and out of use. Fig. 3 is a lon sectional view taken through the device with the table extended. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the complete device. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detail views of various parts thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a supporting-plate, which is pro vided with projecting eyed lugs 2 upon opposite sides at the upper corners thereof. Mounted within the eyes of these lugs are the metal hooks 3, whose hooked ends are adapted to engage the lower edges of the sides of a bed. or of a drawer, while the hooks 1, secured to the face of the plate, are adapted to engage the upper edge of said side boards of the bed, and by means of the thumb-screws 5 the hooks are caused to engage tightly the lower edge of the side boards of the bed and. clamp the same securely between the pivoted hooks 4 and the hooks mounted in the lugs 2. Should it be de sired to support this plate upon a windowframe, wall, or the like, the use of the hooks is dispensed with and nails or other headed projections (not shown) are adapted to pass through the keyhole-slots 6, formed in the body of the plate, and the plate lowered, so that the heads will be opposed to the reduced portion of these slots, and thus hold the plate in supported position.
Provided upon the forward portion of the plate centrally thereof and extending from the bottom to the top is a sleeve -or tube 7, in which is adapted to fit the cylindrical support or standard. 8, which, by means of the sct-screw 9, is adjustably supported within the tube 7 at any height or angle, as may be desired. Mounted. adj ustably upon this support is a collar 10, which assists the screw 9 in holding the support 8 within the socket, so as to prevent it from sliding too far down therein. The tubular support 8 is provided with the elongated slot 11 and the semicircular projections 12, the said projections being divided by a slot in alinement with the slot 11, the purpose of which will presently appear. Pivotally secured within the semicircular projections 12, by means of a pivot 13 ,is a projection 14 of the arm or support 15, which with the upper end of the support forms a hinge, a hinged brace 16 being secured within the slot 17 of the arm 15 and the slot 11 of the support for holding the arm 15 at right angles to the support or allowing it to lie parallel with the support when folded. The outer end of this arm 15 is provided with a hinged brace 16, to which is secured the exten sion 1S of the arm. By this construction the extension 18 is adapted to be folded upward and parallel with the arm 15 when desired. Mounted upon is one section 19 of a table, while carried upon the outer extension 1S and removably se cured thereto by means of the sleeves 20 is the outer section 19fl of the table. In order to hold the outer section 19a upon the inner section.19 when the table is in folded position, l provide the spring catch-plate 21, which is secured to the section 19 of the table centrally thereof, as clearly shown. It will thus be seen that when the sections are folded back upon each other and the brace 1/1 is folded so as to fit within the slots 11 and 17, that the parts will assume the position as clearly shown in Fig. 2 and occupy as small a space as possible, so that when the table is secured to a wall or the like or to a bedstead it will occupy a very small space and all the parts being in a vertical position and lying iat.
ln order to hold the section 19'L in proper position upon the arm, l provide a springcatch 22, which is carried by the inner sleeve 2.() and is provided with the operating porthe upper face of the arm 15 IOO IIO
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that I provide a portable table which is especially adapted for the use of invalids or which may be used to economize space by being secured to the walls or the like and which is the embodiment of simplicity, durability, and ineXpensiveness, thus providing a thoroughly efficient and practical device of this character.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a portable table, the combination with a plate adapted to be secured to the sides of a bedstead or to a vertical surface, of a support adj ustably mounted in said plate, a
ged arm carried by the upper end of said support, a sectional table carried by said arm, and means for adjustably securing the outer section of the table to the outer end of the hinged arm, whereby the same may be secured at any angle.
2. In a portable table, the combination of a supporting-plate provided with a centrallyarranged tube, means for securing the same to the side of a bed or a vertical surface, a cylindrical support mounted in said tube, a hinged arm hingedly secured to the upper end of said support, an inner section of a table stationarily secured to the inner section l of the hinged support, an outer section of a table adjustably secured to the outer section of the arm, means for holding the outer section at any angle with relation to the arm, and means for bracing the hinged arm in horizontal position connected to the arm and the support.
3. In a portable table, the combination of a supporting-plate provided with a centrallyarranged tube, means for securing the plate to the side of a bed or a vertical surface, a cylindrical support mounted in said tube, a hinged arm hingedly secured to the upper end of said support, an inner section of a table stationarily secured to the inner section of the hinged support, an outer section of a table adjustably secured to the outer section of the arm, means for holding the outer section at any angle with relation to the arm, and means for engaging the outer end of the arm for holding it in folded position.
4. In a portable table, the combination with a supporting-plate provided with a centrally-arranged tube, of a support adj ustably mounted in said tube, a hinged sectional arm hingedly connected to the upper end of said support, and a sectional table carried by said hinged arm the outer section of the table being rotatably mounted upon the outer section of the arm for the purpose set forth.
5. In a portable table, the combination with a plate provided with a centrally-arranged tube, said plate being adapted to be secured to the sides of a bedstead or to a vertical surface, of a support adjustably mounted in said tube, a hinged sectional arm carried by the upper end of said support, and a sectional table carried by said arm the outer section of the table being rotatably mounted on the outer section of the arm, for the purpose set forth.
6. In a portable table, the combination with a supporting-plate provided with a centrally-arranged tube, of a support adjustably mounted in said tube, means carried by the support for limiting the downward movement thereof within the tube, means passing through the tube to engage the support to hold it at the proper adjustment, a hinged sectional arm carried by the upper end of said support, a sectional table carried by said arm, the outer section of said table being rotatably mounted upon said arm, and means for holding the rotatable section at its proper adjustment with relation to the arm.
7. In a portable table, the combination with a supporting means, of a standard adjustably supported by said supporting means and provided with a socket in its upper end, an arm hingedly connected to the upper end of said standard and provided in the socket upon the under side near the hinged portion, a table carried by said hinged arm, and a hinged brace connected to the standard and the arm and adapted when folded to be incased in the sockets of the standard and arm.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
