Description

A. B. BULLOCK.
TRAY ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION man r55. 23. ma.
1,290,072, Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
WITNESSES:
m ATTORNEY E gTATES ANNETTE B. BULLOCK, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
TRAY ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 7, 1919.
Application filed February 23, 1918. Serial No. 218,622.
Loon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tray Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tray attachments, adapted to be attached to and supported by a bed, table, chair or other suitable support.-
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a tray attachment which may be easily and quickly adjusted to any desired height, which is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture, which may be used for supporting dishes or books, or which may serve as a desk.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a novel collapsible tray attachment, whichmay be readily dismounted and collapsed to a flat compact 'form for the purpose of storage or shipment.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of a novel folding tablet .device adapted to be detachably supported in difl'erent positions upon a tray to suit the convenience of the user. I
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tray attachment with the parts assembled in their operative positions.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the tray attachment shown mounted upon a portion of a side rail of the bed, the tablet and its supporting member being removed.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the lane of the line 33 of Fig. 2, the tabet and its supporting member being shown mounted on the tray and the standard shown clamped to the bed rail.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the difierent views.
1 designates a vertical standard comprising a plate having punched therefrom a tongue 2 which is adapted to embrace the upper edge of a right angled bed rail 3 of the usual type, the horizontal portion of which is adapted to be clamped by the upper end of a vertical screw 4 which is fitted in a threaded hole in a horizontal extension 5 with which the lower end of the standard is provided.
6 designates a horizontal tray, preferably provided with raised edges 7. A U shaped plate 8 has its arms secured to opposite longitudinal edges of the tray 6. The transverse portion of the plate 8 is centrally provided with a horizontal rectangular portion 9 in which is slidably fitted the standard 1 one side of which is provided with a longitudinal row of depressions 11 adapted to receive one end of a thumb screw 10,
. which is fitted in a screw threaded hole in the portion 9. The depressions 11 form on the opposite side of the standard 1 a longitudinal row of projections 12 against the upper sides of which is adapted to rest one end of a brace 13 which is adapted to bear against the standard 1 and the other end of which is hinged by a horizontal pintle to a member 14:, which is secured to the under side of the tray 6, and which has a stop projection 15 which serves to limit the downward swinging of the brace 18. The
brace is adapted, when the tray 6 is re moved from the standard 1 to lie flatwise against the under side of the tray 6.
A tablet 16 adapted to support a book or writing paper has its upper end hinged by hinges 17 to the upper end of a vertical supporting member 18, the lower edge of which. is provided with vertical pins 19 adapted to be removably fitted in either pair of two pairs of vertical holes 20 provided in the tray 6 respectively adjacent to the longitudinal edges thereof. The upper side of the tablet 16 may be provided near its upper end with a transverse strip 21 of wood or suitable material, which serves as a pen or pencil rest.
The lower end of the tablet 16 is adapted to rest upon the tray 6, as shown in Fig. 1. When so supported, the tablet 16 is in an inclined position. The inclination of the tablet may be reversed from that shown in the drawing by changing the member 18 to a position at the other edge of the tray and fitting its pins 19 in the other pair of holes 20. The tablet may thus be changed so as to incline in either of two transverse directions, so as to suit the convenience of the user.
In the operation of my invention, upon loosening the screw 10, the tray 6 may be with the pins 19 of the member 18 mounted in either pair of holes 20, or the tablet may be entirely removed with the member 18 from the tray.
When it is desired to dismantle the attachment, the screws 4: and 10 are loosened, the standard 1 detached from the bed rail 3, the tray slid off from the upper end of the standard 1, and the tablet 16 and member 18 are removed from the tray 6. The tablet 16 and member 18 may then be disposed flatwise lengthwise within the raised edges? of the tray 6, and the brace 13 disposed parallel with the bottom of the tray. In this condition, the parts may be arranged in compact form for storage or shipment.
The standard 1 near its upper end, may be provided with a hole 22 adapted to receive a supporting rail, not shown, forsusp'ending the attachment, when it is not desired to clamp the standardto a bed or other support.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of myinvention.
What I claim is 1. In a tray attachment, a vertical stand-- ard having means for being clamped to a support and provided with a longitudinal row of depressions in one side thereof which respectively form projections on the other side thereof, a tray vertically slidableon said standard and provided with a set screw adapted to enter any one of said depressions for clamping the tray to the, standard, and a brace secured to the tray and adapted to bear against said standardand .to have engagement with the uppersides of said projections.
In a tray attachment, a vertical standard having means for being attached to a support and having on one side a longitudinal row of depressions which form on the other side of the standard a longitudinal row of projections, a tray vertically slidable on said standard and having a set screw adapted to enter any one of said depressions, and a brace hinged to the bottom of said tray and adapted to be swung from a position parallel therewith to an inclined position and in the latter position being adapted to bear against said standard and to engage the upper side of one of saidprojections, when the set screw is in one of said depressions;
- 3. In a tray attachment, a verticalstandard having means for being attached to a support, atrav' supported by said standard and having two Vertical holes respectively adjacent to opposite edges, a supporting membera dapted to be supported by said tray and having a pin adapted for removable insertion in elther of said holes, and a tablet hinged at one end to said member so as to be swung from a position parallel therewith to an inclined position and in the latter position being supported by said tray.
4. In a tray attachment, a tray having two pairs of holes respectively adj acent to opposite edges, a supporting member having two pins adapted to being removably fitted in either pair of holes, and a tablet hinged at one end to said supporting member so as to be swung from a position parallel therewith to an inclined position and in the latter position having its other "end adapted to be supported by said tray, the tablet and supporting member being adapted in their parallel position to be stored flatwise in said tray.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ANNETTE R. BULLOCK.
