This invention relates to a detachable and collapsible body rest adapted for use in connection with seats, chairs, and benches, more particularly railway car seats, and has for its object to provide means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, capable of being detachably secured in an upright position at one end of a seat or bench for squarely, comfortably and efliciently supporting the body of a person when one is reclining in a direction corresponding to the direction of length of seat. a

A further object of the invention is to provide a rest for the purpose set forth having means to permit of extending the height thereof to provide for different heights of chair or bench backs when the rest is used.

A further object of the invention is to provide a rest for the purpose set forth hav ing bracing means capable of being detachably connected with a window sill, or other support, for maintaining the rest in an upright position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a rest for the purpose set forth, in a manner as hereinafter referred to, whereby the elements forming the rest can be disconnected from each other and folded in a compact manner.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a rest for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction and an rangement, strong, durable, efficient in its use, readily set up and inexpensive-to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically de scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, wherein is shown an embodiment of the 1nvention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the. scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a railway car seat which includes a back 2 and end or side rails 3. 4 denotes a window-sill. The foregoing elements are of known construction.

The rest comprises a pair of uprights each of which consists of an upper section 5, and a lower section 6. The section 5 is hollow and the section (3 telescopes therein. The lower end of the section 5 is split, as at 7, and also provided with peripheral threads 8. The upper portion of the section 6 is threaded as at 6.

The section 6 is maintained from movement relatively to the section 5 by a clamping nut 9, which engages the peripheral threads 8 and owing to the fact that the lower portion of the section 5 is slitted, when the nut 9 is moved upon the section 5., the lower end thereof is frictionally clamped to the section 6.

When thclower portionof the section 5 is clamped to the threaded portion of the section 6, the threads 6 prevent any slipping of the sections relatively to each other, or in other words cause a more binding engagement when the clamping nut 9 is set to clamp the

5 and 6 together.

As the

sections

5 and 6 of each upright are capable of shifting relatively one to the other, it is obvious that the height of the rest can be regulated as desired. The

inner side of each section 5, near the top thereof, is formed with a series of inwardly extending

lateral lugs

10, 11 and 12 and each of said lugs is formed with a trian gular shape recess 13 and a slot 14 which communicates with the recess 13.

Each of the sections 5, near its lower end, has a pair of inwardly extending lugs 15 formed in a manner similar to either of the

lugs

10, 11 and 12. The lugs 15 are arranged above the slitted lower portions 7 of the section 5. One of the sections 5 below the lug 12 is provided with a lug 16 which is disposed at right angles with respect to the lug 12 and provided with a pocket 17.

.The uprights are connected together and maintained in spaced relation by a pair of

18, 19. The former is arranged near the top of the uprights and the latter intermediate theends of the uprights. The member .18 is utilized for supporting the head and the member 19 for the back and said member 18 is formed with a series of dove-tail tongues 20which detachably engage in the recess and

10, 11 and 12. The member 19 is formed with dove-tail tongues 21 which detachably engage in the lugs 15.

When the members 18, 19., are coupled with the uprights, vertical movement is arrested, by

split rings

22 and 23. The former surrounds an upright near its upper end and is interposed between the

lugs

11 and 12 and the latter surrounds the lower portion of the section 5 of an upright and is interposed between the pair of lugs 15. In case the member 18 moves upwardly its movement is arrested by the abutting of the ring 22 against the lug '11 and if the .member 19 moves upwardly the shifting move ment thereof is arrested by the ring 23 abut ting against the upper lug 15.

18 and 19 and arranged in vertical position, such position is maintained, by elements consisting of a lengthwise adjustable sectional rod 24, pivoted as at 25, to an car 26, projecting from a tongue 27 which is capable of engaging in the lug 16. The sections of the. rod 24 are maintained in an adjusted position by a clamping nut 28. The lower end ofthe rod 24 is bent at right angles as at 29 and is adapted to seat upon a window-sill '4. Extending downwardly through the right angular end 29 of the rod 24 is a hook 30 capable of engaging against the lower face of the sill- 4. The hook 30 is maintained in clampingposition by a thumb-nut 31, Which is mounted on the shank of the hook and engages the right angular end 29 of the rod 24. A washer 32 or other suitable means, is carried by the right angular end. 29 of the uprights.

Each of the sections 5 has a screw threaded extension 41 with "which is-adapted to engage a crook 42 which takes over the top of the back of the seat.

When the rest is in operative. position the crook 42 takes overvthe back edge of the seat, the uprights are mounted upon the scat bottom and the brace element is connected with the sill 4, or other suitable anchoring means and by such an arrangement the rest is maintained in a perpendicular position.

Owing to the manner inwhich the elements of the rest are, setup it is obvious that they can be disconnected from each other after which the rest can be folded in a compact manner. Preferably the canvas or cover 40 is employed to inclose the elements of the rest when they are detached from each other.

A rest for the purpose set forth comprising a pair ofextensible uprights, curved brace members detachably connected with said uprights for maintaining them in spaced relation with respect toeach other, and an element adapted to be detachably connected to an anchoring device and further detachably connected near the upper andthe lower end of an upright, and a crook detachably connected to the upper end of one of said uprights, said anchoring element including an extensible rod.

A device for the purpose set forth comprising a pair of uprights, brace members detachably connected with said uprights for maintaining them in spaced relation with respect to each other, a brace element including an' upper and a lower rod hinged together, means carried by an upright and by said upper rod for detachably connecting said rod to the upper portion of said upright, means carried by the lower rod for detachably clamping it near the lower end of said upright, and means carried by the lower end of the upper rod for anchoring said brace member.

A device for the purpose set forth comprising a pair of uprights, brace members detachably connected with said uprights for maintaining them in spaced relation with respect to each other, a brace element including an upper and a lower rod hinged together, means carried by an upright and by said upper rod for detachably connecting said rod to the upper portion of said up right, means carried by the lower rod for detachably clamping it near the lower end of said upright, and means carried by the lower end of the upper rod for anchoring said brace member, each of said uprights being extensible.

A device for the purpose set forth co1nprising a pair of uprights, brace members detachably connected with said uprights for maintaining them in spaced relation with respect to each other, a brace element including an upper and a lower rod hinged together, means carried by an upright and by said upper rod for detachably connecting said rod to the upper portion of said upright, means carried by the lower rod for detachably clamping it near the lower end of said upright, and means carried by the lower end of the upper rod for anchoring said brace member, and a crook capable of being carried by the upper end of either of said uprights for connecting the upright with the back of a seat.

7. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a pair of uprights, brace members detachably connected with said uprights, for maintaining them in spaced relation with respect to each other, a brace element including an upper and a lower rod hinged to gether, means carried by an upright and by said upper rod for detachably connecting said rod to the upper portion of said upright, means carried by the lower rod for detachably clamping-it near the lower end of said upright, and means carried by the lower end of the upper rod for anchoring said brace member, and a crook capable of being carried by the upper end of either of said uprights for connecting the upright with the back of a seat, said upper rod being extensible.

A device for the purpose set forth comprising a pair of uprights, brace members detachably connected with said uprights, for maintaining them in spaced relation with respect to each other, a brace element including an upper and a lower rod hinged together, means carried by an upright and by said upper rod for detachably connecting said rod to the upper portion of said upright, means carried by the lower rod for detachably clamping it near the lower end of said upright, and means carried by the lower end of the upper rod for anchoring said brace member, and a crook capable of being carried by the upper end of either of said uprights for connecting the upright with the back of a seat said upper rod being extensible, each of said uprights being extensible, and means for clamping each up right in adjusted position.
