GEGBGE d. JOHNSTON 0F CUBA, ILLINOIS.
OFFICE.
FOLDAIBLE HANGING SEAT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. JOHNSTON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuba, in the county of Fulton and State. of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Hanging Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class. of chairs, and pertains especially to a folding or collapsible seat adapted to be temporarily suspended in seating position from various suitable objects, and to be removed from said position for folding and 'storingwhen not in use. g
The object of the invention isto provide a foldable sea-t construction specially adapted for children which shall be expeditiously unfolded intoseating position, and to furnish means for adjustably 'zhangihg the seat in position for occupancy, as from the back of a chair, the back of. the front seat of an automobile, or for adjustably suspending the seat in seating position from any-other place or object to which the hanging means may befound applicable.
A further object of the invention is to provide a detachable tray or table of special construction which shall .be adjustable on the folding members of the seat, and to provide'means for extending and bracing the seat in seating position.
Various other objects, advantages, and' improved results are attainable in the practical application of the invention, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the seatto the back of the front seat of an automobile.
- Fig. 2 isa side elevation showing the seat I applied to the back of an ordinary dining chair. Y
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the application of the extension rods.
Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the arts in folded position. Fig. 5 is a centra sectional view.

Application filed November 10, 1915. Serial No. 60,710. Y
The seating *board 1 is preferably made of three-ply wood, but other suitable material may be "used. The upper face of the board 1 is provided with .two sets of eyes 2 adjacent to the side edges of the board,-the purpose of the eyes will be hereinafter explained. The under face of the board 1 is provided with a pair of sleeves 3 in each of which is adjustably secured, by thumb screws 4, an extension rod 5. The back edge of the board is provided with a suitable strip l such as felt or rubber, for
protecting the said edge and also any 0bjeet it engages in hanging the seat.
The folda-ble; elements of the seat consist of a pair of pivoted side frames and these frames being of .the same shape and construction and performing the same func tions, only one of :them will :be described in detail. The, frames are preferably formed by one rod, or composed of a single piece of stiff wire of suitable size and length, and one of saidframes comprises a front member 6, a bottom member 7, which is pivoted in one setof the eyes 2, so that the bends or corners 8 prevent lengthwise movement of the member 7, a top member 9 parallel with the bottom member 7, and terminating in an upwardly turned end 10 and a rear member 11 parallel with the front member 6 and-having an extension 12 projecting into engagement with and extending above the end 10, Whichis secured .to .the extension 12, by means of a special clamp or coupling 13, having a projecting loop 14 for attaching a strap 15.
The adjustable'hanger for the seat comprises a pair of books 16, having a hollow stem 17 slidable upon the extension 12, and adjustably secured by. thumb screws 18.
The tray or table 19, is preferably com- I "posed of three-ply wood, but other suitable material may be used. The tray has a pair of arms 20, adapted to extend over the forward portion of the top members 9, and the under face of said arms is provided with a plate hook 21', for hooking over said mem- H bers 9. v I
Referring to the modification shown in Fig. 8, the tray 22 has metal arms 23 attached thereto in lieu of the tray hooks 2'1, and said arms have a tubular portion 24, provided with a slot 25, by means of which the portion 24 is sprung upon themembers 9 position so that the seat is ready to be occupied with or without the tray or table which may be applied and adjusted as desired or as occasion may demand.
It will be understood that the seat may be used as a vehicle seat for adults as well as children, that it may be made in various sizes, that it may be hinged from various places, and that in the event of hanging the seat from an object which would permit the seat board to swing out of proper seating position the extension rods are employed for adjusting the seat to proper or desirable seating position.
Obviously when-the parts are folded in flat position, the seat will occupy a very small spaceand may therefore be readily and conveniently stored or placed as desired, and in such folding the hanger hooks may be removed if desired.
I do not wish to be understood as confining my invention or the parts thereof to any particular size, material, or to the method of 1 making the same, nor do I wish ,to limit myself in the practical application of my invention, but reserve the right to make such changes and alterations in manufacture and adaptability of the invention as may come within the scope of the appended claim. 1
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A. foldable hanging chair comprising a seat having a concaved front edge and a convexed rear edge, a pair of side frames mounted on the seat, said frames having a vertically extending member and a short upturned member abutting against the vertical member, a fixed coupling inclosing the short member and having an aperture through which the vertical member extends, a strap loop projectinofrom the coupling, a tray having inwardly projecting arms extending over the top portion of the side frames, a. plate secured lengthwise the arms and having a hook-shaped flange for engaging said frames, and means connected with the said vertical members for suspending the chair.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
eno. o. JOHNSTON.
