To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GARNET LEA, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in High Chairs, of which the following is the specification. p

My invention relates to improvements in high chairs and the object of the invention is to devise a collapsible high chair body which may be readily supported on the back of an ordinary chair or other similar supporting means and it consists essentially of the following arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.

1 indicates the .upper portion of an ordinary chair, such as a dining-room chair. 2 indicates my high chair body which comprises the back 3 and seat portion 4, such seat portion being divided into two portions 4* and 4 hingedly connected at 4: and to the chairbaok 3 at 4 indicate vertical rods, which are held in grooves 6 formed in the chair back 3, the upper ends of the rods 5 being formed into hooks 5*, which are preferably covered with rubber tubing 7. The lower end of the rod 5 is turned outwardly at 5 and then extends forwardly at 5 beneath the seat 4, the extreme end of the portion 5 being turned up at 5 the lower portion being provided with a recess 5 The upper end of the portion 5 then extends horizontally back at 5 such horizontal portion 5 being turned inwardly at 5 and connected to the main portion of the bar 5.

It will be noticed that the portion 5 rests upon the upper edge of the back 3 and the portion 5 against the lower edge of the back thereby holding the portions comprised by a the bar portions 5 5 and 5 from vertical movement. The bars 5 are held in the grooves G by means of suitable cleat members 8, which are secured to the back 3 so as to extend over the grooves 6, the lower ends of such cleat members extending down sufficiently to bear against the back of the bar portions 5' and thereby preventing such bar portions swinging outwardly.

The front edge at each end of the portion 4* is provided with a notch 4 which engages with the recessed portion 5* of the bar portion 5 when the seat 4; is unfolded into the horizontal position shown in the drawing.

9 indicate securing members, the main portion of which is channel-shaped so as to extend over the lateral edges of the seat 4 at each side of the joint between the portions 4* and 4. One end of each securing member 9 is provided with a lug 9*, which is pivotally secured by a screw 9' to the portion 4:. 10 indicates a tray, the inner por" tion of which is provided at its inner edge with grooves 10*. 10 indicates a plate secured to the lower face of the tray in proximity to the grooves 10 so as to extend slightly thereover, the plate 10 being slightly shorter than the groove 10*.

When it is desired to place the tray in position the upper portions 5 are sprung so as to engage with the outer edge of each of the plates 10 and so as to enter the grooves 10*. The tray 10 is then forced inwardly until the end of the portion 5 springs past the edges of the plates 10, the horizontal portion 5 then entering into the groove 10 above the plate 10 securely locking it in position as will be clearly seen 011 referring to Fig. 4:.

When it is desired to collapse my chair all that it is necessary portion 5 outward so that the tray 9 may be withdrawn. The members 10 are then swung outiwardly and the portion 48 of the seat 4 swung upwardly so as to carry the portion 4 against the back 3 and the portion 4* against the portion 4:. The members comprising the bar portions 5 5 and 5 are then swung inwardly so as to overlap one another thereby rendering the chair very compact. When in use the hook portions 5" provided with a rubber covering 7 are hooked over the upper edge of a chair such as the chair 1 and forms a support for the high chair body. In cases where there is a to do is to spring the,

slant t0 the chair back or Where the high chair body, such as I have described, is sup ported upon the rug rail of an automobile it may be necessary to use means for holding the lower portion of the chair out from the support in order that the chair seat may be held horizontal. To provide'for this I have secured tWo brackets 11 so as toextend from each lateral edge of the chair seat, such brackets being provided with sleeve portions 11*. 12 indicates a U-shaped bar, the arms of which extend through the sleeve portions 11* and are adjustably secured therein by a set screw 13. The horizontal portion of the U-bar 12 is adjusted so as to bear against the chair back and is secured in such position so as to hold the seat el of the high chair body in a horizontal position.

From this description it Will be seen that I have devised a. very simple form of high chair body, which may be readily collapsed and yetwhen unfolded and in 'use will form a rigid structure, which will accommodate a child as readily as an ordinary high chair Copies of this patent may be obtainedfor LI1ClWl1lOh Will give a maximum of tray space.

' IVhat I claim as my invention is:

A high chair body comprising a back provided With two grooves 011 the back thereof, aseat hinged thereto and foldable upward 'hereagainst having a notch at the frontof two sides thereof, rectangular side frames having an offset top and side and hook members forming the continuation of one side, the hook bearing side being 'located and pivotally held in one of the grooves on the back and the offset side being located in one of said recesses to maintain the seat and side frames in open position, a cleat covering each groove, and a tray carried by the frames, the o'lfsets in the side frames adapted to inclose the seat When in folded position against the back.
