Be it known that I, WVILLIAM HENRY OLAMPETT, of the city of London, in the county of Middlesex, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices adapted to sit on or to be secured to a bed, reclining chair or the like to give an inclined support for the users back and with which it is desirable to provide arm rests and an adjustable and removable table, and my object is to devise a simple, effective and convenient rest which may be adjusted readily by the user unless he be practically totally helpless.

I attain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described and illus trated in the accompanying drawings in which.

In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.

1 is a base frame of any suitable construction, to the forward side of which is hinged the back rest frame 2, so that the latter may fold down upon the former when the device is not in use. The base frame is preferably provided with feet 3 at its forward end adapted to rest on the side rails of a bed or upon any surface on which the device is used. The back rest frame is angularly adjusted by means of suitably journaled rock arms 4, one at each side of the device, each rock arm being connected with one of the sides of the back rest frame by means of a pivoted link 5. Each rock arm 4 is secured to the spindle of the forward member of a gear train 6 suitably carried in a gear casing 7 and secured to a side member of the base frame. Preferably three gears are employed in each gear train and the rearmost gears are connected by the transverse shaft 8 extending from side to side of the device and having its center part 9 offset so as to occupy a dropped position when the back rest frame is folded down. This makes it possible for the device to be folded flat and retained in place on the bed when the patient is not sitting up, the center portion of the shaft being down out of the way. The ends of the transverse shaft 8 project through the gear cases 7 at each side of the apparatus, so that a worm wheel 10 may be connected therewith at either side of the apparatus as may be desired. This worm wheel is journaled on a suitable bracket 11 on which is also journaled the worm 12, having its axis in a fore and aft direction. By means of bolts 13 the bracket may be secured in position at either side of the apparatus as may be desired. The worm spindle 1 1 extends toward the front of the apparatus and has a hand wheel 15 secured thereto, in a position convenient for operation by the person using the device, to vary the inclination of the back rest frame as may be desired. The forward end of the worm spindle is suitably journaled at the upper end of a standard 16. The lower end of this standard is bent substantially at right angles and is detachably secured in position in a hole in a lug 17 secured to the side member of the base frame and is held in position in said hole by means of a set screw 18. A lug 17 is provided at each side of the apparatus so that the worm spindle 1% may be supported at either side of the apparatus according to the location of the worm and worm wheel. The position of the operating gear may thus be arranged to suit either a right handed or a left handed person.

The Worm gearing is preferably incased in a suitable cover 19.

The back rest is provided with a canvas back support 20, preferably connected with the back rest frame in the following manner.

The metal side rods 21 are pivotally connected at their lower ends to the inner sides -of the side members of the back rest frame.

Notches 22 are provided in the transverse top member of the back rest frame in which the upper ends of these side rods may lie, so that no portion of a side rod lies forward of the plane of the forward faces of the side members of the back rest frame. The ends of these side rods may be held in position in the notches 22 by means of the pivoted latches 23. A cross rod 24 has eyes formed therein adapted to fit over the ends of the side rods 21. The

21 and 2 1 are fitted into suitable casings formed at the top and sides of the canvas back support 20. When the side rods are released, they are easily swung forward and the canvas stripped from them and from the cross rod whenever it becomes necessary to remove or replace the canvas.

Arm rests 25 are hinged, one at each side, to the side members of the back rest frame so that the rests may be swung back to'lie' against the forward side of these side members. These arm rests when in use are held in position by braces 26. Each brace 26 is pivoted at its upper end to the corresponding arm rest, while the lower end 27 of each brace is enlarged to run in a slotted guide 28 secured to the back rest frame, the slot being only of sufficient width for the passage of the main portion of the brace. The end of the brace isthus held in position so that it may slide freely lengthwise of the guide, but cannot accidentally become detached therefrom. WVhen the end of the brace is at the lower end of the slide, the arm rest will be supported in position as shown particularly in Fig. 1. When the arm rest is folded, the lower end of the brace slides upon the guideway. In order that the parts may lie as flat as possible, I form a groove 29 in the under side of each arm rest in which the corresponding brace 26 will lie when the arm rest is folded flat.

Flexible straps 30 are secured to the upper end of the back rest frame and arejintended to support a pillow.

In connection with the device I provide a removable and adjustable table. This table is supported on a bail-shaped frame 31, the ends of which are provided with hooks 32 adapted to engage in keepers 33 secured to the upper surfaces of the arm rests. The ends of the table supporting frame are thus easily disengaged at any time. The table is pivoted on the transverse portion of the frame, and has a segmental bracket 34: secured thereto. An arm 35 securedto the transverse portion of the bail-shaped frame is adjustably clamped to this segmental bracket by means of a clamping bolt 36 pass ing through a slot 37 in the bracket, The table 38 may thus be adjusted in any desired position for use either as a table or as a book rest, being preferably provided with a ledge 39 along the edge adjacent the back rest.

What I claim as my invention is:-

1. A bed rest comprising a base frame; a back rest frame hinged to the front of the base frame; rock arms journaled on suitable supports on the base frame; links each pivotally journaled at one end on the back rest frame and at its other end on one of the rock arms; gearing for actuating the rock arms supported onone side of the base frame; and worm gear for actuating the rock arm actuating gearing including a spindle provided with a hand wheel adjacent the frontof the apparatus, said worm gear and spindle being located at one side of the device.

2. A bed rest constructed as set forth in claim 1 in which separate sets of gears are provided for each rock arm, said sets of gears being connected by a transverse shaft which has its center part offset so as to occupy a dropped position when the back rest frame is folded down.

3. A bed rest constructed as set forth in claim 1 in which separate sets of gears are provided for each rock arm, said sets of gears being connected by a transverse shaft and provided with means for connecting the worm gearing with either set of gears and for supporting the forward end. of the worm spindle at either side of thedevice. 5. A bed rest provided with. arm rests in combination witha, bail-shaped table supporting frame provided with hooked ends; keepers for detachably receiving said ends secured to the upper sides of said arm rests the sides of the supporting frame lying on the arm rests; a table hinged on the transverse portion of said bail-shaped frame; and means for adjustingthe angular position of the table on said transverse portion of the said frame. 6. A bed rest provided with arm rests in combination with a bail-shaped table supporting frame provided with hooked ends;

keepers for detachably receiving said ends secured to the upper sides of said arm rests, the sides of the supporting frame lying on the arm rests; a table hinged on the transverse portion of said bail-shaped frame; and means for adjusting the angular position of the table on said transverse portion of the said frame comprising an arm secured to the transverse portion of the bail-shaped frame; a slotted segmental bracket secured to the table, and a clamping bolt passing through said slot and the arm.
