Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 2, 1918.
Application filed March 2, 1917. Serial No. 152,030.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, JANE LoUDo-N WALKER MURRAY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Craiglockhart, in the county of Mizdlothian, Scotland, have invented a new and useful Piece of Furniture Convertible for use as a Bed, Couch, Bath-Chair, or the like of which the following is the specification? The invention relates to'furniture of the type'which' is: convertiblefor use as a bed, acouch, acarrying chair orithe like, or one or more of them, and which hasla central or sea-t member, a headmember pivoted-t0 one end thereof, and a leg. member pivoted to the other-fend, the leg mfember having in somecases' a foot member hinged in turn to 'itythe head an'd leg members beingso "articulated'together that on the head member being either raised or loweredthe position ofthe leg member is also adjusted; and'the invention has for its object to provide an improved piece of furnitureof this type capable of use also'asa bath chair or a stretcher, and simple in construction considering its variou's capacities, of light sides" of the central. structure A an weight, and easily operable; a
An illustrative but not limitative example of the piece offfurniture is shown on four accompanyin'g sheets ofexplanatory drawings. In these drawings Figure 1 and Fig. 2 are respectively a plan and a side elevation, with certainparts omitted to avoid confusion, of the structureas a bed, and Fig.3 is a side-elevation showing the structure arranged as a bath chair, While Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a plan and a side elevationof details hereinafter referred to,
the last mentioned figure being drawn to an enlarged scale.
Fig; 6 is a perspective showing the rectangular shape of the frames J and rest or support E, E E f As shown in the drawings there is provided a central braced strueture'A provided with supporting ,postsA and forming approximately the central part of the bed and ;theseat of the bath chair when the apparatusis soused; structure is pivoted what may'be termed a 'head member or'frame A consisting of two To one end of thiscentral rods or tubes pivoted at" A on'the oplpesite e a 9 nested 'tegether' attheze upper ends by a convenient manner.

transverse part. To the other end of the 7 tended below the pivotsA v and pivotedto the rods A which extend to and are rigidly connected with the foot 'member'BH There is also provided a subsidiary head-'member 'B pivoted on the same axis as the main head member A and formingin certain positions ofxthe structure: aback rest. The central structure A, the subsidiary head member B the leg member B and the footmember B are all shown as fittedw-ithi ordinary metal lath mattresses B for the sake of clearness in drawing, though'of course spring or other convenient form of mattresses may beemployed, and these are upholstered in any On-each side of the subsidiary head member B is a wormwheel quadrantC (Fig, 5) gearing with a worm C on a spindle C turning in bearingsin a. bracket C on the central-structurevA. These spindles C? have on them bevel pinions 0 each of which gears wither-similar bevel pinion C on the opposite ends of aitransverse shaft@ which maybe fitted with a handle or with a handwheel, (not shown) easily accessible to the occupant. The subsidiaryhead member B has on it catches D vby means of which it may be locked to the main head member A When these catches are free'and the-parts in the bed position, on
- operation of the'gearing the subsidiary head member B alone may be adjusted to any desired angleand thus form a bed back rest. When however thesubsidiar y head member B is locked by the catches D to the main head member A on operating the gearing these two members are raised together and, as the main head member A the leg member B and the foot member B are 'artic ulated to one another as hereinbe'fore described, upon the head member A being raised into an angled position-the-leg member B is lowered accordingly, -and tl16f fOOt member B substantial-1v maintaining-its horizontal position fi'n'ally becomes thefoot heels G in the operating gearing are the structure are securely held in any position to which they are adjusted. The chain lines in Fig. 2 show the parts in the position ,they would. assume when adjusted to practically midway'between the bed' and bath chair positions, in which position they form A What may be termed an inclined couch. The leg member B has parts extending beyond its point of pivoting A to the central structure A toward the head member A and these parts are connected by links D to the .;-head member. These links form arms in the bath ohairposition and also serve to secure the parts rigidlyin their various positionsgFAlong the sides of the various'mem- .bers are arranged .flaps D which may be turned shorizontally as shown in Fig. :1 to increasexthe eflective width of the bed, or theymay be turnedup as'shown in Fig. 3 "tofproteot and inclose the, occupant when ,thei-apparatus is in use as a bath chair. :Means such-as thumb screws similar to. J Fig.2, but for the sake of clearness, not shown, are' provided lforwlocking the flaps D in any desired position. The footmember B carries at opposite sides upstanding slotted tubes D braced togetherito'form the foot'ofthe bed, and rodsD carrying pawls D slide in these-tubes so that they may be 30 lowered to support that member whenithe apparatus is in use as a bed, or raised when that memberbecomes the foot-rest ofa bath chair. The pawls D engage catches on the ,1 tubes D and hold the rods D* in either position. To the subsidiary head'member-B is attached, a device forming a book rest and table support. This device is only shown in -Fig. 3 by chain lines for the sake of clearness xin drawingyand it consists of two rods E hinged atone end to the opposite sides of the subsidiary head member and.v having hinged to their opposite ends two other rods E ,tofwhich in turn is hinged a U-shaped rod E? forming in the position shown the :the supporting rod E is turned u against .the rodsE andthe whole turne overso that it extends down the back of the subsidhead member B At the head end of the structure there is also a frame, the side members G of which run on, guides G -(Fig. 5) on .the. central structure A. A rack is formed on each side memberjwith which there gears a pinion Gr on a transverse shaft G the, ends of-which are squared to receive a handle so that the I .framevmay be moved outward or inward. 7 This frame has posts-H bearing upon. the floor and-adapted to support the apparatus Wl1611 it is in bed-form. These postsI-Iextend u ward and carry at their upper ends arms 1 pivoted to swing horizontally, QBQELPfiGClZtO carry curtains or the like, and so interconnected, as shown in. Fig. 4,
, tangular frame J pivoted to the upper ends thi carriage being so. shaped and pivoted at tray support or book rest. 'When not in use by a t. I55fl'IinkI-I" thatlmovement of-one caueesmovement of the other in the opposite direction. The posts H also carry a hood and screen device when the apparatus is in use as a bath chair. This device consists of a recof the posts and supported at its outer side by stays J To this frame there is hinged a second like frame J both capable of being locked in any desired position by thumb screws J J (Fig. 2). They are covered with any suitable material, and the covering of the second frame J may be provided with an aperture glazed with, for example, celluloid. When desired the second frame 7 J may be folded back on to the first frame J or on loosening the thumb screws J J, the frame J may be turned up into the-ver- .tic'al position, the lower end of the stays J then sliding on the rod H and the frame J be made to lie horizontally as shown by .dotted lines in Fig. 2, or the latter frame 7 maybefolded over so-as'to extend'down the back of the structure. I V
A wheeled under-carriage K. is provided,
r 0 its rear upon the supporting posts A of. 9
the centraL structure A that, when the ap-. paratusis :iIl': use as a bed, only-the rear a-wheels touch the ground, but when theapparatus is to be used as a chair and the foot' member B isbeingbrought ,down as. here- 7 inbefore described, cam-like arms K thereon then engage the front end of the carriage so that its front wheels are forced into con- "tact with the floor. This-movementof the' parts also raises the central structure A off the ground into theposition shown in Fig.3.
Handles L telescoping. within tubes L are provided at head and foot so that the aparatus may be used as a litter' orcarrying chair. 1 r
