Description
June 19, 1951 l G, F1 BUJJON] 27,557,595 l REVERSIBLE BENCH f Filed Feb. 2, 1950 INVENToR. fafa? j* /fJ/a/Vf Patented June 1'9, 1951:l :i
22557595 REVERSIBLE BENCH- George F. Bujjoni, lJersey: City,l N; J. Application February 2, 1950, Serial No. 141,927vv l .Y2-.clamer- (01.155-1-43) This inventionrelatestofa--convertible and table.
It isf an object of the presentfinvention toprol' vide'a bench whichcan beV easily converted` into a table' byl simply pivoting forwardly the'-backrest thereof to a position where it will be supported in a horizontal position while permitting the legs of the child or person using the bench to extend under the horizontally extending back and wherein the arm rests for the back serve as the support for the back when it is extended in a horizontal position.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a combined bench and table which is particularly adapted for use by children who desire to watch television shows while eating their supper and when the supper has been eaten, the top can be cleared and pushed back so that the device can be used as a bench by the child to continue the viewing of the television, and thereby to eliminate the necessity of having to move chairs to the desired location in order that children may view the television set.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a convertible bench and table which is of simple construction, inexepensive to manufacture, of pleasing appearance, has a minimum number of parts, easy to convert, convenient to use, of sturdy construction and eicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the combined bench and seat with the back rest extended to a horizontal position to permit the child to be served its meal and to permit the child to view the television set at this time.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken generally on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical end elevational view of the combined bench and table with the back rest moved to its normal upright position and to permit the child to still view the television set.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken generally on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the figures, I Il represents the top of a bench having leg supports II and I2 disposed at the opposite ends of the same. These leg supports are connected to the under part of the bench top and are braced against inward displacement by brackets I3.
End brackets I4 can be provided at the outer ends of the bench top- I. Above the benchv topi Ilisl a backrest l-which isV connected'by' endl` brackets IE and Il toi the ends of the seat'ftopI IG for pivotal adjustment upon pins' Iwvh'erebyf. "thelfback rest I5Lcanfbe pivoted inthemanne'r asA showninFig. 1, sothat the back faceiof said: back rest can serve as a table top on which dishes 2I can be rested. The child, as shown in Fig. 2, can slide his legs under this rest I5 in such a manner that he can eat and at the same time observe a television set 22.
The hinge brackets I6 and I1 are preferably formed of metal and conform generally respectively to arm rests 23 and 24. These hinge brackets are tapered from a folded over securing ange 25 toward the pivot pin I 8. The arm rests 23 will support they back upon the seat top as the back is in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 3, and will also support the back when the back is being used as a table top and in the manner as shown in Figs. 1, '2 and 4. When the seat back I5 is in the upright position, a portion of each hinge plate I6, including its flange, will depend downwardly about the end of the seat tcp I0 in order to provide proper support to the rest and make for a rigid construction.
When the back rest is on the top of the seat, edge 2i' will engage with the top face of the seat I0. When the back rest is turned over to form the table top, edge 28 will engage with the top face of the seat. These edges 21 and .28 are squared and will have flush and stable engagement with the seat top.
The hinge brackets I6 and II are secured to the back rest through their anges and by tacks or screws 29.
It will be apparent that there has been provided a combined bench and table which is easily convertible so as to make possible the use of the device as a bench with a back rest or as a table so that one can continue to view a television 22 whether eating or sitting and wherein to eliminate the need for separate table and chairs which would have to be moved from the table and the table as well moved when chairs are not alignedv at the table. The width of the table top is narrow and accordingly a child sitting on the seat will not have his vision impaired by the table top.
It should be further apparent that these benches with the backs turned to the horizontal position provide a table top and can be positioned across from one another and in that way provide a picnic table arrangement. When the arrangement is not in use as a picnic table, the back rests can be moved rearwardly and the benches aligned readily for use about a camp fire, and used as a regular bench without tables having to be taken away. The benches make for a compact construction so that they can be readily transported without consuming space.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as dened by the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A convertible bench and table construction comprising a bench having a top, a back rest adapted to extend along the edge of the top. hinge brackets connected to the back rest and pivotally connected on a common axis to the ends of the bench top and means for supporting the back rest in either vertical or horizontal positions upon the same being pivoted on said axes, and said supporting means having supporting edges angled with respect to each other and adapted to engage respectively with the bench top surface in either position of the back rest.
2. A combined bench and table construction comprising a bench part having leg supports, a
back rest adapted to lie along one side of the bench part, said bench part having a top member, a bracket plate connected to the back rest, pivot pin means for connecting the bracket plate to the end of the bench part, arm rests connected to the ends of the back rest and respectively having supporting edges thereon angled with respect to one another, one supporting edge engaging said top member to support the back rest when in a vertical position and the other supporting edge engaging said top member to support the back rest when the same has been pivoted forwardly with respect to the bench part upon said pivot pin means and extended to a horizontal position to serve as a table top.
