Application March 20, 1936, Serial No. 69,843
6 Claims.
This invention relates to furniture, and more particularly to a combination table and chairs unit.
One object of the invention is to provide a table which while pleasing to the eye may be adapted to a variety of uses.
Another object is to provide a table and chairs unit in which the backs of the chairs conform in shape to the edge of the table and in which the chairs disappear by folding under the table.
A further object is to provide a table and chairs unit in which the chairs are pivoted to the table and form a partial support for it.
Other objects are to simplify the construction of table and chair combinations, to improve the appearance thereof and reduce the cost of manufacture.
Other objects will be apparent upon consideration of the following specification.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a table seating four, with the seats extended.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a milliners table seating two, with the seats extended.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a table such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the seats folded under the table.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a shoe display table with a single seat connected therewith.
Referring to the drawing, in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the table top In is supported on a central support II. The support I I may either be a solid piece, as shown in Fig. 1, or a U-shaped frame such as is shown in Fig. 2.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 1, a pair of arms I4 are hinged to the support ll, one at each end of the support. Each of the arms I 4 has an arm I6 hinged at its inner end to the end of the arm I4 remote from the support I I. Each of the arms I6 is hinged at the outer end to a seat l8 which rests on the floor and forms, with the arms I4 and I6, a lateral support for the table and prevents the table from tipping. The arms I4 and I6 form a hinged link by means of which the seat may be moved out parallel to itself or pivoted about the outer end of the link.
Each seat I8, in Fig. 1, is designed to accommodate two people. If a single seat is desired the arms I4 and It may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 2, and the seats pivoted directly to the support I l In the table shown in Fig. 2 the solid support I I has been replaced by a tubular U-shaped support, connected to the table by a pair of brackets 20. When used as a millinery table the table top l8 may have a mirror 22 mounted on it.
A combined shoe case and seat is illustrated in Fig. 4. In this table a plurality of shelves 26 are placed in the side of the table, as shown, to form a display case. As in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 a seat 28 is pivoted at one side thereof to the table and may be folded out of sight under the table.
Having thus described the invention, it will be realized that it is susceptible to various changes and modifications, and it is not therefore desired to limit the invention to the particular form herein shown and described, but rather by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, a narrow vertical frame, brackets on opposite upper ends of said frame extending transversely thereto, a table top mounted on said frame and on said brackets, and a chair pivoted to one side of said frame and supported on the floor, said chair being adapted to fold under the table top.
2. In a table and chair combination, a narrow vertical frame, brackets formed on the opposite upper ends of said frame and extending transversely thereto, a table mounted on said brackets, a chair pivoted at one side and on one end of said frame and resting on the floor, and a second chair pivoted on the end and side of the frame opposite the pivotal connection of said first chair and resting on the floor, said chairs being adapted to prevent the table from tipping.
3. In a combined table and chair set, a table top, a central support extending across and secured to said table top and adapted to rest on the floor, a chair having the back thereof adapted to conform to the periphery of said table top, and means connecting the chair to the support whereby the chair swings, relative to the support and on a vertical axis to a closed position under said table top, said chair in all positions thereof preventing said table from tipping.
4. In a combined table and chairs set, a table top, a central support extending across and secured to said table top and adapted to rest on the floor, a first chair having the back thereof con forming to a portion of the periphery of said table means connecting said chair to said support, whereby the chair swings relative to the support, to a closed position under said table top, a second chair having the back thereof shaped to conform to a portion of the periphery of said table, and means connecting said second chair to said support on the opposite side of said table top from said first chair, whereby said second chair swings, relative to the support, to a closed position under said table top, said chairs in all positions thereof preventing the table from tipping.
5. In a device of the character described, a table top, a central support extending across and secured to said table top, a link pivotally connected to one end of said support, and a chair pivotally connected to said link and resting on the floor. 6. In a device of the character described, a table top, a central support extending across and secured to said table top, a link pivoted at the inner end thereof to one end of said support, a hinge intermediate the ends of said link, and a chair hinged to the outer end of said link.
