PATENT INK-WELL-SUPPORTNG ATTACHMENT FOR DESKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583943, dated J' une 8, 1897.
Application filed July 10, 1896. Serial No. 598,(i55. (Ne model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. RAYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logan, in the County of Hocking and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Inkell-supporting Attachments for Desks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of ink-well attachments for desks, and has particular relation to attachments of this class for school-desks.
The objects of my invention are to provide a simple and inexpensive ink-well and support therefor, to provide improved means for supporting the ink-well from the desk and inclosing the same beneath the desk, and produce other improvements, the details of Construction of which will be more fully pointed outhereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a portion of a desk having my improved ink-well and support thereon, said ink-well being shown as closed beneath the fiange or edge of the desh-top. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of my improved ink-well and support, showing said :Ink-well extendedfrom the desh in position for use. Fig. 3 is a plan View of a modified form of ink-well and support. Fig. 4: is a central longitndinal section thereof, and Fig. 5 is a central sectional View through the keeper or hanger which I employ in the Construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views.
a, represents the desh-top or the projecting edge portion thereof, and b represents a bracket-plate which, as indicated in the d raw ings, is secured to the under side of said desktop, preferably near the outer edge thereof. The bracket-plate b has depending therefrom a central stem b'.
12 represents a hearing-head, the latter being provided with a central short upwardlyextending stern portion b and an enlarged base portion 6 The upper side of the out'- wardly-projecting portion of the base b* is beveled or inelined downwa-rdly in the direction of the outer edge of the desh-top. The bearing-head thus formed is designed to have its stern portion b secured against or united with the stern portion b' of the hracket-plate by means of a uniting-screw c, the latter entering and engaging screw-holcs formed through said head and stems.
c' represents an ink-well-supporting arm, the inner end of which is formed witha downwardly-projecting boss portion 6 the lower side of which is beveled or inclined to conform to the bevel or inclination of the bearing-head top. Through this inner end of the arm c' passes loosely the lower portion of the stem b' and upper portion of the stem b the inclined lower side of the arm b being thus made to bear on the inclined surface of the hearing-head ?3 and the arm c' being thus journaled on said stems. The outer end of the arm c' enters a socket in a lateral projection (Z of an ink-well ci", the latter being formed of glass or other suitable material, and said inserted arm end being intersected by a screw or pin d which serves to form a detachable connection of said arm and ink- Well. As indicated in the drawings, the inclinations of the upper side of the hearinghead b'* and the under side of the hearing portion of the arm c' are such as to result, When said ink-Well-supporting arm is thrown inward, in'the gradual elevation of the inkwell. In this manner the normally open top of the ink-well may be made to fit closelybeneath a desk or pad of suitable material e, which is secured to the under side of the desktop at the proper point.
In the manner above described it will readily be seen that simple, reliable, and inexpensive means are not only provided forsupporting an ink-well from the desh, but for cl0sing the same beneath said desktop and pro- Viding an air and dust tight cover therefor.
It is obvious that in the manner above described the ink-well may, when not in use, be supported in a position which will in no wise interfere with the movements of the scholar or with the handling of books, slates,
or papers.
As indicated in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 of the drawings I may employ a slightly-different method of supporting the imir-well, consisting in the employment of an ink-well-supporting bar g, which is adapted to slide within a keeper or hanger h, which is secured to the under side of the desk-top, thereby admitting of theink- Well being moved inward or outward, as may be desired. As indicated in the drawings, the ink-well h', when supported in the manner last described, may be made to depend from a slightly-eniarged head h of the bar g, said head thus being made to abut against the outer side of the keeper h and limit the inward movement of said bar g. The inner end of the bar g may be provided with a downturned end portion g', which is adapted to come into contact with the rear side of the keeper h, and therebylimit the outward movement of said bar.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
ROBERT E. RAYMAN.
In presence of C. C. SHEPHERD, E. XV.- BRENKER.`
