ADJUSTABLE COMBINATION-DESK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
Application filed October 12,1904. Serial No. 228,173.
To all whom it TILCLZ/ concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. OWENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Day ton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Qhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Combination-Desks; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tojmake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an adjustable combination-desk.
Some of the principal objects of this invention consist in constructing a desk so that it may be changed ad libitum into a high desk, adapted to be used in a standing position, or to a low desk or writing-table, adapted to be used When sitting down; also, in providing a desk which may be changed, as desired, from. a flat horizontal-top desk to a desk having an inclined top; also, in so constructing a desk that it will be not alone adapted for ordinary writing purposes, but will at the same time be especially adapted for book keepers, cashiers, and also draftsmen and architects; and still a further object of this invention consists in providing a set of pigeonholes having movably connected to the ends thereof an inclined top, said pigeonholes being adapted to be suitably and securely attached to any writing-table, desk, or writing-shelf having a flat horizontal top.
Among some of the principal advantages of my invention as accruing from the carry ing out of the above objects may be mentioned the .following, to wit: My improved desk is composed of few parts, simple in construction, and necessarily inexpensive in cost of manufacture, and when desired it may be used as an attachment for desks, shelves, 620., by simply attaching the pigeonholes to any flat horizontal base which is firmly supported at a suitable height, thus making a complete combined flat and inclined top desk out of the same, also in providing a desk which is suitable for a writing table or desk and at the same time may be used as a drawingboard by any class of draftsmen, either at a suitable height to be used standing or low enough to be used sitting down.
My invention consists, essentially, referring in general terms to the construction of my adjustable combination-desk, of a set of pigeonholes or similar small receptacles, an inclined top adapted to be moved or raised to an upright stationary position or lowered to a horizontal stationary position, and a vertical projecting portion or flange extending around the front and side ends of said inclined top and connected thereto, and a horizontal base having allat-surfaced top adapted to support said pigeonholes and inclined top, said base being supported at a suitable height by legs, standards, or otherwise, and the novel arrangement and combination of these several parts, as illustrated in the annexed drawings, taken in connection with the following detailed description and set up in the subjoined claims in accordance with the statutes in such cases made and provided therefor.
Referring to the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, and in which the same letters refer to like parts wherever occurring throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my adjustable combination-desk with the parts in the position they assume when it is desired to be used as a high desk or with an inclined top surface; and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of same, taken on line it 3:, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the inclined top raised when it is desired to have a low desk to be used sitting down or to have a flat horizontal surface to work upon.
In describing my said invention, and referring in detail to the various parts or mechanical elements or features of construction which combine to make up my adjustable combination-desk by means of the letters of reference as aforesaid, A refers to a set or row of pigeonholes or similar receptacles of suitable height and of any preferred style of construction provided with a closed back or rear portion curved or formed in a segment of a circle at a, to the ends of which are pivotally connected at b the end portions of the vertical flange 0 of the inclined top B, said portions of said flange being curved at (Z to permit of said inclined top being raised when it is desired to change the desk from a high desk or an inclined top, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to a low desk or a desk with a flat or horizontal top or surface, as shown in Fig. 3.
A horizontal or flat-top base E, supported by legs or standards 6, (said legs for the purpose of illustration being shown as broken off in the drawings,) receives and supports the inclined top and pigeonholes, said pigeonholes being connected by their lower portion f, through the medium of screws, nails, bolts,
or in any suitable manner not necessary to 5 be here shown, to supporting-base E.
What I claim is 1. In a desk, the combination, with a base having a flat top, of a pigeonhole-frame mounted upon said top, and an inclined top 10 having a depending flange, said inclined top being pivotally connected to the pigeonholeframe through said flange, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination in the herein desubstantially as and for the purposes set 20 forth. I
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES S. OWENS.
