UNITED STATES Patented February 2, 1904.
WILLIAM S. WEED, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HANDKRCHIEF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,033, dated February 2, 1904. Application filed May 29, 1903. Serial No. 159,250. (No model.)
To all 1077.077?, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM S/VEED, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handkerchiefs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to adapt a handkerchief, particularly of the variety used by ladies, to afford, as a matter of convenience, a holder for the article of toilet commonly employed as the medium for applying face-powder and which is usually in the form of a piece of chamois-skin. To this end I provide on the handkerchief, preferably in one corner thereof, a pocket adapted to hold the powder-applying medium, which should be tacked in the pocket to retain it and adapt it to be readily removed prior to laundering the handkerchief, and which is preferably formed with a small pocket to contain an adequate supply of the powder for use on any occasion in addition to any supply thereof which may be on the applying medium.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan View of a handkerchief equipped with my improvement in its preferred form; Fig. 2,9. section taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 viewed in the direction of the arrow and enlarged; and Fig. 3, a plan view of a pocket-equipped piece of chamois-skin, which is used inside the handkerchief-pocket as a powder-applying medium.
A denotes a handkerchief, that shown being' of the hemstitched variety used by ladies, though my improvement is applicable with equal advantage to lace handkerchiefs and to all other varieties on which its use may be desirable. At B is shown a pocket in one corner of the handkerchief, being of rectangular form and hemstitched about two of its edges at right angles to each other, extending along the corresponding handkerchief-borders, in the folds of which such edges are projected, as represented at o in Fig. 2, and between which they are permanently fastened, as by the hemstitching. Thus one-half of the piece of material ferming the cover of the pocket B is free, like a iiap, to be turned back on itself cornerwise from the point t, as and for the purpose hereinafter described.
C denotes a piece of suitable soft material, such as chamois-'skin or flannel, as the preferred medium for applying the face-powder and which affords a holder for face-powder in the sense of retaining the powder on its surface and in itspores. Its shape (shown to be rectangular) and its dimensions adapt it to fit within the pocket B, wherein it should be fastened at the inner corner fo in the corresponding corner of the pocket, as by tacking it with a few stitches, as indicated at m', to hold it from falling out and adapt it to be readily removed by withdrawing the stitches prior to laundering the handkerchief. On the free corner portion of the pieceC is formed a pocket C for containing' a small supply of facepowder.
Vith a handkerchief provided with my improvement a lady is most conveniently equipped with the necessary article of toilet comprising a powder-rag without the necessity of carrying it about as a separate commodity and in a manner which renders it always at hand ready for use without exciting attention.
The particular construction of my improvement shown and described, while it may be varied in matters of detail without departure from the spirit of the invention, peculiarly adapts it for inconspicuous use, since the user requires only to turn back the iiap portion of Vthe pocket B to uncover the holder C within it for application to the surface to be powdered, and this may be done quite inconspicuously.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
