Description

Y UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGO TOLLNER, OF BROOKLYN, new YORK.
CLAMP FOR CARRYING SCHOOL-BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No.224,25o, dated. February 3, 1880.
Application filed March 29, 1879. v
v To all whom it may concern 'Be it known that I, HUG TOLLNER, of Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements relating to Book-Clamps for l Carrying School-Books; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full and exact d escription thereof.
My improved clamp maybe operated with the same facility as those long known and approved, and may haveth e same compass or range of variation in the thickness of the mass of books which it incloses. I have devised an improved arrangement by which it is more convenient in use.
The following is a description of 'whatI consider the best means of carrying out the invention.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view, representing the clamp in use. The books it contains are presented edgewise to the eye. Fig.2 is an end iew. Fig. 3 is a cross-section.
Similar letters ofreference indicate like parts in all the figures.
A and B are the two rigid parts or sides of my clamp. D is a strap of leather fastened permanently to the partAand passed through a hole in the part B, and also through the jam-buckle O, ,whichlatter is mounted on the end of the strap D. Permanently secured in A, and also passed through a hole in B, is
another strap, 0, the free end of which operates in the jam-buckle C.
- M represents the mass of books, orof books and a slate, which the clamp is to hold firmly. The straps O and D" and buckle 0 form the fastening means by which the clamps are held together and are liberated at will. They extend along the whole outer face of the part B. I have employed wood as the material for both the parts A and B. The part Bis thick and hollow. Its outer face is removable, as indicated by B. The hollowinterior, guarded by thevremovable cover B,serves as a holder for" pencils, pens, and the like. The removable cover B may be used as a ruler. Its position in the clamp B when out of use as a ruler guards its edges.
An additional strap, E, secured to the'end r OfA upon one side, and to-the strap D adjacenttothe point of its passage through B upon the other, and having a portioustifl'ened byja piece of rigid material, E, serves as a handle by which thewhole may be suspended and transported. l 1
I esteem it important that, the clamp, with its contents, be suspended from the end in-- stead of from the side. It allows the books to be carried with the flat face instead of an edge or end against the side of the person. The whole may also be hung on the arm, allowing the hand to be protected in a muff or pocket.
as set forth.
2. In a book-clamp, for the purposes set Y forth, the combination of the plate A, plate B, having a chamber between it and removable cover B, the straps O and D, the handle-strap E E, secured to said strap D and plate A, as shown, with the jam-buckle, as specified. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of March, 1879, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HUGO TOLLNER. Witnesses:
I J. B. SMITH,
EUGENE TOLLNER.
