SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,668, dated February 23, 1897.

To alt whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. STELLNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Danville, in the county of Vermilion The object of this invention is to provide a holder for canes, umbrellas, or the like that is adapted to be attached to the handle or other suitable part of an ordinary travelingbag or valise.

The invention consists in the combination with a body portion, to which is secured a flexible strap of leather or the like, having a buckle or other fastening device secured to one end thereof, the other or free end of the strap being passed through a series of suitably-disposed apertures or slots in said body portion in a manner hereinafter described, whereby loops or openings are formedbetween the strap and the body portion of the device, through which openings canes or umbrellas may be passed and firmly held by drawing upon the strap and then securing its free end by means of the said buckle.

The invention also embraces certain minor features hereinafter described and particularly pointed out.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, 1 is the body portion of the device, which, in the present instance, is in the form of a wellknown tag-holder, the same consisting of two superposed pieces of leather united together, except at one end, for the reception of a tag or card 2, and having the usual openings 3, through which the name, 856., upon the card may be seen.

end of which is secured by rivets 10 or other means to and upon the, under side of the body portion 1, and an attached buckle 11, as seen in Fig. 3.

hen the device is to be used, the strap is first brought over, say, the ring 0" of the handle 12 of a valise 13, Fig. 1, and is then passed down, forming a loop 14, through the slot 4, then up through slot 5, then down through slot 7, forming a loop 15, up through slot 8, then down through the rear end slot 6, forming a loop 16. The first loop 14 is then drawn as taut as may be desired around the handle 12. An article, such as a cane 17, Fig. 1, is passed through the second loop 15,and another article, say an umbrella 18, Fig. 1, is passed through loop 16. The strap is then drawn upon so as to firmly embrace and hold the said articles in place, and the free end is fas tened by bucklell, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, there being, as shown, a wider space between the end and intermediate slots than there is between the intermediate slots themselves, and the strap being passed through the said slots in the manner described there are formed upon one side long loops to receive the umbrellas, canes, or other articles and upon the other side shorter loops for frictionally holding the strap.

It will thus be seen that in the described construction not only is the device readily at tachable to a valise-handle or the like, but that it is adapted to securely retain one or more articles of different thickness, and that this result is accomplished by a single strap, with a buckle or equivalent means for holding the free end of the same in connection with the body portion; also, that in the described form of the device, which is the preferred one, the strap, passing transversely through the tag-holder and the previouslyinserted tag 2, prevents the accidental escape of the latter.

WVhen it is not desired to make use of a tag-holder, I employ the form shown at the left in Fig. 1, the body portion of which consists simply of a comparatively narrow thick piece of leather or united plies of leather.

It is obvious that the number of loops for holding the articles need not be limited to the number shown and described.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device for holding canes, umbrellas and the like, consisting of a body portion provided with end and intermediate slots or apertures, there being a Wider space between the end and intermediate slots than there is between the intermediate apertures themselves, and a strap secured at one end portion thereto and passed through the slots or apertures thereof to form upon one side of the body portion one or more short friction bends or loops, and upon the opposite side longer loops designed to receive th erethrough the article or articles to be held, together with means for securing the free end of said strap, substantially as specified.

2. A device for use in connection with traveling-bags, valises &c., for holding canes, umbrellas and the like, and comprising a body portion provided with two adjacent slots or apertures, and also with one or more other slots or apertures which are separated from the first-named slots by a space or spaces wider than that between the two adjacent slots, and a strap attached to said body portion and designed to be passed through said slots or apertures, to form upon one side of the body portion one or more short friction bends or loops, and upon the opposite side one or more longer loops to receive therethrough the article or articles to be held, together with means for securing the free end of said strap, substantially as specified.

3. The herein-described combined tag and umbrella or cane holder for use in connection with traveling-bags, valises &c., and consistin g of a body portion having therein a pocket or slip to receive a tag, openings therein through which the tag may be seen, said body portion being also provided with end and interinediate slots and apertures, there being a Wider space between the end and intermediate slots than there is between the said intermediate slots themselves, and a strap secured to the said body portion and designed to pass through the said slots or apertures and through the tag to secure the latter, to frictionally secure the strap and also to form loops to receive the article or articles to be held, substantially as specified.
