I us ca. mom-ummwnsuma'ro o c UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN EKENGREN, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
SAFETY-HOLDER FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,720, dated January 5, 1897.
Application filed April 2, '1896. Serial No. 585,897. (No model.)
To all whom it may c0neern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN EKENGREN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented. new and useful Improvements in Safety-Holders for Pocket-Books and Purses, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in safety-holders for pocket-books and purses; and it has for its object to prevent the snatching of a pocket-book or purse when carried in the hand, as is usually the habit of ladies.
My device consists in means for holding the pocket-book or purse securely when carried in the hand, and in such a manner as to permit its being opened without detaching it from the finger to which it is secured.
The invention is carried out as follows, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pocket book provided with my improved safety-holder. Fig. 2 represents a detail perspective view of said safety-holder, shown as detached from the pocket-book; and Fig. 3 represents a modified form of said safetyholder.
Similar letters refer to similar parts whereever they occur on the different parts of the drawings. p
The safety-holder is preferably made of spring-metal wire, as shown in the drawings, wherein-- A represents the straight shank portion adapted to be inserted longitudinally through the pocket-book B, as shown in Fig. 1. The said shank is made slightly longer than the length of the pocket-book, as shown.
In one piece with the shank A is made the holder-bar 0, having in one end a hook or eye D, adapted to receive the end of the shank A after the latterhas been inserted through the pocket-book, as shownin Fig. 1.
The holder-bar O is provided about midway upon it with a finger-ring E, which may be open, as shown in Figs. 1 and'2, or closed, as
shown in Fig. 3, and said ring may be of any shape or convenient size to receive one or more of the fingers of the hand of the person carrying the pocket-book. I also wish to state that instead of using only one ring on the holder-bar 0 two or more individual rings may be used without departing from the essence of my invention.
If so desired, the finger-ring E may be covered with rubber, leather, or other soft material F, as shownin Fig. 3.
In carrying the pocket-book or purse a finger or fingers is put through the ring or rings E and the pocket-book or purse is held by hand, as usual, and while being so held it cannot be snatched, as it is securely attached by means of the ring or rings E to one or more of the fingers of the hand of the person oarrying the pocket-book or purse.
The said safety-holder may be varied in shape or size to conform to the shape or size of the pocket-book or purse for which it is intended without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- The combination with a pocket-book, of a safety-holder consisting of a holder-bar G extending across the back of the pocket-book and provided intermediate its ends with a finger-ring E, and a shank A formed in one piece with saidholder-bar and disposed parallel thereto, the said shank being inserted between the leaves of the pocket-book and at its free end en gaging a hook D formed on the end of the holder-bar O, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 23d day of March, A. D. 1896.
JOHN EKENGREN.
