Description

M. SMITH.
(No Model),
MUFP.
N0. 282,391. "Patented July 31"', .1883.
C97@ Inventor c// of 'Wznesses @l ,/Ltornegs UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MARGRET SMITH, OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
MUFF,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettersvlatent No. 282,391, dated July 31, 1883.
- Application filed February 23,1883. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may, concern.-
Be it known that I, MARGRET SMITH, resid ingat Little Rock, Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in La` 5 dies Muffs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming par't hereof, in which;
Figure l is an exterior elevation of the device as it appears in use. Fig. 2 is a view Io similar to Fig. l, with the main `iiap raised. Fig. 3 isa top View with the ladys companion open, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section. 1
Like letters of reference indicate the same 15 parts in all the gures. y
Referring` to the drawings by letter, A is the main body of the muff, and it may be composed of any suitable material, according to, the tastes and means ofthe owner.
2o `Bis the opening or pocket of the muff proper, in which the hands of the wearer are placed.
C is a Satchel-shaped pocket containing compartments for various articles, as shown in Fig. 3, those shown being, respectively,
2 5 marked as follows, viz: a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, and fi. D is a purse or pocket attached to the front `of the satchel or ladys companion, closed by a suitable clasp, D.
u Theladys companion or satchel is provided 3o with metallic jaws C and clasp or lock 0*.
E is a ribbon or other stripor cord for suspending the mu from the neck of thewearer.
F is aiiap of material, whose function is to cover and conceal the purseD and satchel C,
3 5 and which may be made, as fancy may dictate,
of the same material as the body of the muif or of any contrasting material.
The devices shown,to which the present interior construction of the ladys companion is 4o adapted, are a thimble, a, a pair of scissors, b,
` pencil c, knife and buttoner d, glove-hook and nail scrapere, perfume-bottlef,` pocket mirror g, comb h, and needle-case andmemorandum i; but these -may be varied to suit the taste or fancy of the individual.
The i general design of my improved muff approaches in appearance a shell, and the utility of my invention will appear without question.
A lady having one of my muffs will be fully 5o equipped for business or pleasure. The articles in the ladys companion are in constant demand, and the purse may be utilized for currency, cards, &c., while the pocket B will accommodate a prayer or` hymn book, or any 55 of the numerous packages ordinarily carried by ladies. `The construction is such that the exterior may be beautifully ornamented by bows, birds, ruffles, Snc., as shown.
(Having thus fully described my invention, 6o
`what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A `1. The muff herein described, having. pocket B, for the hands, satcliel C,\f or the storage of toilet and other similar articles, and purse D 65 D, arranged in the orderidescribed, for the purposes set forth.
