To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CEOILIA D. McVAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Safety Device for Ladies Hand Bags, Pocket-Books, Purses, Mail's, and the like, of which the following is a specification.

The liability of ladies, particularly when on traveling, shopping or similar expeditions, to lay down, forget, lose or have stolen their hand-bags, pocketbooks or mulls, is well known and the object of my invention is to provide a novel safety device, which is inexpensive and readily attached to the wrist or other portion of the anatomy or apparel of the wearer and which will positively prevent the occurrence of such accidents.

In all the embodiments of my invention, it will be seen that the handbag, pocket-- book or purse is positively prevented from being lost, laid down, forgotten or stolen and when the broad principle of my invention is used, in combination with a muff. it will be seen that I have provided novel and positive means for preventing loss of the pocket'book, purse or muff, by the same beinglost, stolen, laid down or forgotten by the wearer or user.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a safety device for ladies hand-bags, pocket books, purses, mails and the like, the muff being shown in section and the co-acting bracelet, as disengaged from the wrist of the wearer. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of Fig. 1, showing the manner of using my novel safety device. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of another embodiment of my invention, showing the manner of applying the same to a bracelet of gold, silver, aluminum or other metals of the conventional type, which may be customarily worn by the wearer or user. Fig. 4; represents a side elevation, partly in section, showing one man ner of securing the terminal of the safety device to the bag, pocket-book, purse or the like, which I employ. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal, sectional view of the mull, showing a purse in side elevation attached thereto and illustrating another embodiment of my invention. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of one form of an attaching device, which I may employ in connection with the constructionshown in Fig. 5. Fig, 7 represents another embodiment of myinvention, showing the purse as secured with in the mall by snap hooks or engaging eyes secured to the interior of the mull", which construction may be reversed if desired.

Referring to the drawings: For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a preferred embodiment which is at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalitics of which my invention consists, can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities, as herein shown and described.

In carrying out the broad embodiment of my invention, I employ a pocket-book, bag, purse, or similar receptacle which has on a suitable portion thereof, one or more seats or sockets 2, into which is inserted or secured the terminal 4 on the end or ends of a tape, cord or other connection 3, so that the parts when assembled will appear as seen in Figs. 1 and 4, it being apparent that the position of the fastening devices 2 and 4 may be reversedor other formsof fastening devices may be employed, if desired.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I employ a pair or a plurality of connections 3, as seenin Fig. 1,which have their inner ends suitably secured .to the pocket-book, bag or purse, or similar receptacle as indicated in said Figs. 1 and 4, their outer ends being secured at 5 to a suitable bracelet, which may be of metal, leather, fabric or other suitable material, of such a characterthat it may readily encircle the wrist or arm of the wearer or user. Referring first to Fig. 1, I provide the pocket-book, bag or purse with a pin 10, which is fitted or pivoted theretoat 11, the free end of said pin passing through eyes 12, which are secured to the inner lining or the like 13 of the muff 9, the free end of said pin being secured in a guard 14, somewhat similar to a safety pin guard or the like, so that the mufi" 9 and the purse or pocket-book are reliably assembled together and are thus positively prevented from being Inislaid, lost or stolen, by reason of their connection together and the employment of the safety device leading to the bracelet 6, which encircles the wrist of the wearer or user, as will be understood from Fig. 2.

In the construction seen in Fig. 3, I employ a connection similar to the connection, cord or tape 3, except that I preferably employ a continuous cord or connection 15, one end of which is secured to the interior of the mufl", purse or bag, as shown in Fig. 1, the other portion of said connection 15 being passed around the bracelet 16, which may be of the usual gold, silver, aluminum or other metallic type, customarily worn by the user and the continuation 17 thereof being secured to the muff or bag, purse or pocketbook in the manner described, in Fig. 1, whereupon it will be seen that if desired, I can readily make the desired connection or application of my device to the customary special bracelet 6, seen in Figs. 1 and 2 or I can apply my invention to the ordinary metallic bracelet 16, so generally worn by ladies, at the present time. 1

In the construction seen in Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown another embodiment of my invention, wherein I employ a bar 17 having a raised body portion, near the ends of which are located the eyes 18, through which the pin 10 passes. Beyond the eyes 18 are located the terminals 19, as seen in Fig. 6, which are provided with spurs or attaching pins 20, which may be clenched upon the interior of the muff or the muff lining 13, as seen in Fig. 5, in any suitable manner, the construction being such that the interior of the muff or lining will not be in any way injured, by the securing of the bar 17 thereto.

In the construction seen in Fig. 5, I have shown a slightly different form of purse or pocket-book 21, the same having a flap 22 and ball and socket or glove button fastening appliance 23, whereby the interior of the purse will be readily accessible. I have also shown in Fig. 5, but a single connection employed, as 94, which may be composed of gold, silver, aluminum or other metals, or may be made of fabric, braid or the like, which may be fastened to the bracelet 6 or 16, as already described, or in any other suitable manner. I

It will be apparent from the foregoing that in my novel device, I have provided novel means for positively preventing the wearer or user from the loss of the pocketbook, bag, purse or mud and the entire clevice, at the same time, has a pleasing and ornamental appearance and can be readily and cheaply constructed in large quantities and can be quickly and easily secured in position upon the wrist or apparel of the user. It will be apparent that the

3, 15, 17 or 2-1 can also be made of braid or other material, to match or harmonize with the fur or material of which the mutt is made and thus be inconspicuous, so as not to attract the attention of pickpockets or other dishonest persons.

In Fig. 7, I have shown still another means for securing the pocket-book, bag or purse within the mufi', the same comprising the eyes 25, which are engaged by the snap hooks 26, which latter are securely fastened to the purse, bag or pocket-book 27, the latter having one or more connections 2% secured thereto, which. may be of the same character as already described.

It will be apparent that while I have shown different forms of securing the purse, bag or pocketbook in position, with respect to the mud and the bracelet, I do not desire to be limited thereto in every instance, as it will be apparent that other devices may be employed, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

It will be understood that under the present vogue in ladies muffs, the same are of considerable size, so that they have a roomy interior, whereby the flap or closure of the

1, 21 or 27 can be conveniently manipulated, so as to be readily accessible. It will be further understood that in the construction of receptacle seen in Fig. 1, by removing the connection or connections 3 from the sockets 2 and disengaging said receptacle from the interior of the muff,

the receptacle can be carried in the hand of the user as is customary. The female member 2, seen in Figs. 1 and 4:, can be secured to the frame of the bag in any suitable manner, which I deem it unnecessary to describe in detail or the attaching device can be secured directly to the body, or fabric, or leather portion of the receptacle if desired. I preferably employ a pair of tapes or connections, as 3 or 15 and 17, since in such case the muff will hang more evenly from the wrist or arm of the user, as will be understood from Fig. 2. It will further be apparent that so far as the broad principle of my invention is concerned, I may attach the ends of the connection directly to the muff instead of to the receptacle 1.

In all the embodiments of my invention,

it will be seen that the receptacle, as 1, 21,

or 27, is of less area than the inner diameter of the muff, so that said receptacle can be contained within and carried by the muff, Without marring the exterior appearance thereof. Inpractice, I prefer to employ the construction shown at 21 and 27,wherein the flap or closure for the receptacle has a fastening device or is accessible at the side or front face thereof, since this construction is more conveniently manipulated than the construction shown in Fig. 1, but of course I do not desire to be limited to either of the constructions of receptacles, seen at 1, 2-1 or 27, since my invention is applicable to other types thereof as well.

It will be understood that the term receptacle which I employ may comprehend a ladies hand bag, purse, pocket-book, vanity case or other device of this general char acter.

It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a ladies hand-bag, pocket-book, purse, muff and the like, which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described preferred embodiments thereof which would give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. The combination of a bracelet, a muff, a fastening device having an opening therethrough on the interior of said muff, a receptacle of less size than the inner diameter of said muff, fastening devices on saidreceptacle adapted to pass through and co-act with said fastening device within said muff and means for securing the combined muff and receptacle to said bracelet.

2. The combination of a bracelet, a mufi', fastening devices on the interior of said muff, a receptacle of less size than the inner diameter of said muff, fastening devices on said receptacle adapted to co-act with the fastening devices within said muff and a connection having one end secured to said receptacle, the other end of said connection being in engagement with said bracelet.

3. The combination of a muff, a receptacle of less size than the inner diameter of said .mufi', said receptacle being contained and concealed within said muff, fasteningdevices common to the outer portion of said receptacle and the inner portion of said muff, one of said fastening devices being adapted to engage and co-aet with the other of said fastening devices, said fastening devices being secured so as to permit convenient manipulation of said receptacle within the interior of said muff, and means for securing the combined muff and concealed receptacle to an arm of the wearer.
