Description
M. A. BYRNE.
TOILET CASE.
(NO Model.)
Patented Aug. 14, 1883.
PA'IENT I OFFIC MARY A. BYRNE, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOILET-CASE.
SPECIFIGATTQN forming part-of Letters Patent No. 283,071,
Application filed May To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY A. BYRNE, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improved Portable Toilet-Case, of which the following is a specification. l
Pocketbooks and bags of different kinds have been made with handles, so as to be con venient for ladies and others to carry suspended from the hand or finger, and shavingoases have been provided with a glass inside of the lid, and-with a stop-hinge or a strap,
to limit the movement of the lid and to,hold
up the same in a convenient position for the glass to be used. My invention relates to a toilet-case that is of a small size, adapted to be carried in the hand, and to contain chalk, powder, or other toilet articles, or a handkerchief, so that in traveling these. articles are easily accessible and add to the comfort of the person provided therewith. a p
l The special feature of my improvement con sists in combining with the toilet-case, having a looking-glass within the lid thereof, a flexible handle, by which the toilet-case can be suspended from the hand, and which handle will also form, a stay or support to keep thelid and mirror in nearly an upright position. This flexible handle is connected at one end to the bottom and at the other end to the lid of the case, and causes the same to hang vertically, and tendsto draw the two parts of the case together and lessen the risk of the same opening when being transported.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case as open. Fig. 2 is a side dated August 14, 1883,
24, ista. (No model.)
View, and Fig. 3 an edge view, of the case as closed.
The bottom a of the case is hinged at b to the top portion, a, and in this top portion or lid 0 there is a mirror, d. The case is preferably covered or made of ornamental materialsuch as Russia leather, morocco, or plush; and of a convenient size to be carried in the hand.
The handle 6 is of flexible material, and one end is fastened at i to the bottom a; of the case, and the other end is fastened at o to the top or lid 0 of the case, and the length of this handle is such that where the case is open, as seen in Fig' 1, the'lid and mirror will be supported in a'nearly vertical position, and when closed the handle is of a convenient length for suspending the case from the hand or finger, and the handle tends to draw the two partsof the case together; but I prefer to use aspringcatch, as at s, to hold the lid to the bottom of the case. i
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the bottom a and lid 0, of the hinge b, mirror d, and handle. 6, the ends of which are connected with the bottom and lid, respectively, and form a stay to hold up the lid when the case is open, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 21st day of May, A. D. 1883.
