Description

G. BAUMANN LADY S HANDBAG Dec. 16, 1930.
Filed Sept. 8, y 1928 INVENTCQ W l M z ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Dec. 16, 193() PATENT GEORGE BAUMANN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK LADY S HAND BAG Application filed September 8, 1928. Serial No; 304,679.
This invention relates to improvements iii ladies handbags and has for its primary obj ect, the provision of a combined pocket-book and toilet kit.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a compartment in a ladys pocketbook for conveniently receiving such toilet articles that are readily required for everyday use, and which compartment is accessible without exposing the money pocket to view, as valuables contained therein might needlessly be disclosed to view which may tend to induce theft, or the valuables may accie dentally drop out and become lost. W'ith this improved hand bag, the money pocket may be kept closed at all times, except when it 1s desired to remove money therefrom, as it prevents the opening of the same for the purpose oit' removing toilet necessities.
f Another object of the invention resides in a vanity pocket book wherein the requisite toilet articles usually carried by ladies may be neatly arranged in a separate compartment from the other pockets of a hand bag, and may be exposed for ready removal when opened.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sectional hand bag including a. toilet article receiving compartment disposed in one section thereof, with the mirror secured in the opposed section, and means for supporting the sections at right angles to each other, whereby the mirror can be conveniently used while ready access may be had to the toilet articles, while the hand bag is rested upon a supporting means or the hand of the user.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features ot which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly lpointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved ladys hand bag in open position.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same in a closed position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical transverse sectional view therethrough.
Figure l is a perspective view of a mod1- rfied form of hand bag.
Figure 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure a.
ticles 19, such as a. comb, powder box, lipstick, scissors, linger-nail tile and the like. The articles are conveniently arranged on the plate and held by straps or the like 20, and the depth of the tray is sulicient to prevent the articles from being touched by the other plate 11 when the same are in closed position. The upper edges of the plates are provided with co-acting spring catches 2l for helding the same in closed position one against the other.
The tray-like section may be dropped from a vertical closed position to a horizontal open position upon release of the spring catches and for limiting the swinging movement ot' the same, I provide a V-shaped bail 22 having its free ends bent outwardly to provide trunnions 23 which are turnably mounted in spaced eyes 241 adjacent one end of the plate 12. The closed end or apex bight portion ot' the V-shaped bail slides in a guide 25 cut and stamped from the plate 11 and engages the inner closed end to limit opening movement of the plate.
With the plate 12 in horizontal position, the plate 11 is exposed in a substantially vertical position and the same has a mirror 26 mounted thereon whereby persons may view themselves when preparing their toilet.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that in Figures 1 te 3 of the drawing, I have shown a ladys handbag in which a vanity kit is mounted between two money pockets, the contents of the kit being accessible without disturbing the locked position of the money pockets, thus preventing needless loss of the contents of the money pockets 5 when preparing ones toilet by theuse ofthe various articles constituting part of the kit.
In Figures i and 5 of the drawing, I have shown a slightly modified form of my invention wherein the same general principle -is in m use but the style kof pocket-book is different. In this form, the plate l1 is mounted in/one of the side Walls of a pocket book l and has the tray plate l2 hinged thereto. The plate l2 when closed is iush with the side of the i5 pocket book and is held in such position by a snap fastener 27 carried by the'finger tab 28; The construction is otherwise the same as in the preferred form.
While I have described what I deem to be D the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth norto anything less than the Whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is f l. In a ladys handbag a pair of hingedly eo connected sections, andvmeans for securing said sections in a closed position, a V-shaped bail hingedly connected to one of said sections, and a guide on the other of said sections with which the bight portion of said bail slidably engages for supporting one of said sections in an open position with respect to the other section.
2. In a hand bag, a pair of sections including metal plates ,hingedly secured together, 4o one of said plates adapted to carry' toilet articles and the other a mirror, a guide cut and stamped from the mirror carrying plates in a manner to project therefrom, a substantially V-shaped bail having its remote ends bent outwardly upon themselves to provide trunni ons, spaced ears formed with the toilet article carrying plate and rotatably receiving .the trunnions, said substantially `V-shaped bail having its apex endmount'ed for slidable movement in the guide and being adapted to support the mirror carrying plate in a vertical position at right angles with respect to the toilet article carrying plate, and means for securingv the sections in closed positions. In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
GEORGE BAUMANN.
