COMBINED WORK-Bae AND RETIC'ULE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application mea March 5, 1913. serial no. 752,077.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HELEN H. TERRY, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Southampton, in the county of Suffolk and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined VVork-Bags and Rectieules, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rl`his invention relates to combined workbags and reticules for use by nurses, maids or other persons while traveling and on other occasions, and has reference more particularly to a device of this class which comprises an outer bag or envelop having means whereby it can be closed, and an inner, foldable member having means for carrying different toilet or other articles, and adapted to be disposed within the outer envelop, Or to be withdrawn therefrom to render the articles thereon, available for use.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable combined work-bag and reticule adapted for use at home or while traveling, which affords means for carrying toilet articles and the like and can be used by nurses, housemaids, or by other persons, which is simple and compact in form and light in weight, in which the toilet or other articles are securely held in position against accidental displacement, which affords ample room for carrying needlework, small articles of clothing or other objects, and which can be attached to the person to render available the contents thereof, while leaving free the hands of the user.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of an embodiment and Fig. 6 is a similar view on 'the line 6--6 of Fig. 4.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that my combined workbag and reticule can be fashioned from any suitable material adapted for the purpose, for example, from cloth, leather, waterproof material or the like. Likewise, any fastening devices adapted for the purpose may be used, notwithstandin that I have shown for example, the usual button and so'cket snap fasteners for securing the .edges of the inner member of the devlce. Needless to say this inner member may be provided with means for carrying toilet or other articles of any desired kind. These and others of th'e details of construction form no part of the invention and can be varied in accordance with individual preference and special conditions, without departing from the underlying spirit of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide an outer bag or envelo 1Q fashioned from a length of material folded upon itself to form the bottom edge 11 of the device, and sewed or otherwise secured along the lateral edges 12, leaving an opening 13 at the top. The upper edge portions of this member' 14 are inturned-at the opening 13 and sewn to form drawstring pockets or sleeves 15, in which is loeatedthe usual drawstring 16, which permits the mouth or opening at the top of the bag to be drawn shut and fastened as is shown in Fig. 1. l
Located within the outer envelop is the foldable inner member 17 secured near its transverse median line 1S, by sewing or in any other suitable manner, to the inturned edge portion 14 at the back of the outer bag. The inner member consists preferably of two thicknesses 19 and 20, of fabric or other material of which the latter may be of waterproof character. It will be seen that the inner member 17 is so positioned within the outer envelop that it can be entirely withdrawn therefrom, as is shown in Fig. 6, being attached to the envelop only at the upper' edge thereof. The inner member is provided along its side and upper edge portions with corresponding elements 21 and 22 of snap or other fasteners, so that it can be secured along these edges when folded within the outer bag. It is provided upon its Patented Dec. 16. 1913. *I
inner surface with straps 23 forming fasteners 24, or with other suitable means for holding in place dierent toilet or like articles 25.
At its upper edge the inner member 17 is provided with a sleeve or pocket 26 eX-.
tending entirel across the end thereof and receiving theleln a cord or ribbon 27. This serves to attach the device to the person of the user, if necessary or desirable, the cord 27 being fastened about the waist, so that the device in its open position as shown in F ig. 4, can depend at the front of the person in the manner o-f an apron. This renders available all the articles carried by the inner member 17, leaving the hands of the user free for other purposes. The outer bag or envelop itself forms a convenient recticule for carrying needlework or other articles.
lf so desired, the inner member 17 may be provided with a rod or bar (not shown), so that itr can be hung from a wall or other support to render the contents of the reticule available for use.
Having thus described my invention l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the class described comprising an outerbag having an opening and means for closing said opening, an inner, foldable member secured within said bag, adjacent to said opening, and adapted to be wholly withdrawn from said bag, said inner h member being provided with `means for carrying toilet or other articles, said inner member further having means whereby it can be secured to the person, to permit the device to be supported upon the body of a person, in the manner of an apron.
2. A device of the class described, comprising an outer bag having an opening,V
an inner member foldable upon itself and secured substantially along its fold line, within said bag, adjacent to said opening, and having means for carrying toilet or other articles.
3. A device of the class described, comprising an outer bag having an opening, an inner member foldable upon itself and secured substantially along its fold line, within said bag, adjacent to said opening, and having means for carrying toilet or other articles, said inner member being provided with fasteners to secure its edges together, and having means whereby, when Withdrawn from said bag, it can be secured to the person of the user, to adapt the device to be carried in the manner of an apron.
In witness whereof ll have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HELEN H. TERRY.
