Description

J. F. DIVINE COMBINED STAFF AND BEACH BAG Filed July 21, 1953 July 6, 1954 IN VEN TOR.
ATTORNEYS Patented July 6, 1954 UNITED IS TAT OFF I CE COMBINED STAFF AND BEACH BAG James F. Divine, (Islands, Fla.
Application?! 1953," Serial No. 369,433-
3 Claims.
This invention relates to handbags of the novelty type, and in particular a handba mounted around a staff or stem with the upper end of the bag gathered over a bushing or collar secured to the stem, the lower end gathered over a spool slidably mounted on the stem, and with the side wall of the bag provided with an opening having a separable fastener therein.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a ba for carrying articles to and from the beach and which is also adapted for suspending articles above the sand.
Various types of devices have been provided for carrying bathing caps, toilet articles, and other devices to and from the beach, however, such devices are designed particularly to be carried in a pocket, handbag, or the like, and for beach useit has been found desirable to provide a carry-all in which different types of articles may be carried and which is also adapted to be forced into the sand to hold the articles in spaced relation above the sand.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a beach bag in which the bag is adapted to carry various types of articles and in which the bag is adapted to retain such articles in spaced relation to the sand of the beach.
Another object of the invention is to provide a beach bag which is of an ornamental appearance.
A further object of the invention is to provide a beach bag having a supporting staff in which the bag is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a staff having a knob at the upper .end with a cord or tie extended from the knob to facilitate carrying the ba on an arm or the like and also to facilitate carrying towels with the bag, a collar extended around the staff and spaced from the knob, a spool slidably mounted on the staif, and a sheet of material gathered over the collar at the upper end and positioned with the lower end gathered over the spool and also having an opening therein with a fastener for securing the material at the edges of the opening together to close the bag.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the beach bag in use with the device carried on an arm of a bather and with the bag shown in the collapsed position.
Figure-'2 is a side elevational view of the improved beach ba showing the bag with the intermediate part extended in .full lines and with the parts collapsed in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the bag taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the staff being shown in elevation.
Figure 4 is a cross section through the bag taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 3 illustrating the bag with the intermediate portion extended.
Figure 5 is a detail showing the sliding spool in the lower end of the bag.
Figure 6 is a sectional view similar to that shown in Fig. 4 showing the bag with the intermediate part collapsed.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like ref erence characters denote corresponding parts the improved beach bag of this invention includes a stem or staff I!) having a knob H at the upper end with a cord or tie 12 at the lower end of the knob, a collar I3 spaced downwardly from the knob, a spool I4 slidably mounted on the staff and a sheet of material l5 havin an opening I 8 with a separable fastener ll therein in one side and having a pleat l8 spaced from the upper end and a similar pleat i9 spaced from the lower end whereby with cordsor the like in the pleats the upper end is gathered over the collar l3 and. the lower end over the spool I 4. The ends are retained in folded or gathered positions, as illustrated in Fig. 2 with cords, tape, or elastic extended through the pleats or the parts may be stitched, or secured as desired.
As illustrated in Fig. 4 the folds or pleats may be formed as accordion pleats and the edges of the material may be finished with suitable binding or hems through which the gathering elements may be extended.
The separable fastener 16 is provided with a slider, as indicated by the numera1 20 whereby the bag may be opened and closed as desired.
With the parts assembled in this manner the bag, with articles therein, may be carried as a cane or suspended from an arm, as shown in Fig. l, and when the device is not carried the lower pointed end 2! of the stall may be forced into the sand or ground to support the device in an upright position.
The bag, which is indicated by the numeral 22, may be formed of cloth, plastic or other suitable material and the spool I 4, which may also be made of plastic or othersuitable material may be provided with a flange 23 and a collar 24 providing an annular recess 25 in which the pleat or hem around the lower end of the bag is secured.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A beach bag comprising a stafi, a sheet of material extended around the staff, a fastener for temporarily securing the ends of the sheet of material together, a spool slidably mounted on said staff, and means gathering the upper edge of the sheet of material together around the staff, and the lower edge of the sheet together around the spool.
2. A beach bag comprising a staff, a sheet of material extended around the staff, fastening means for temporarily securing ends of the sheet of material together for closing the bag, means gathering upper and lower edges of the sheet of material around the staff, means anchorin the upper edge of the sheet of material to the staff and means slidably mounting the lower edge of the sheet of material on the staff.
3. In a beach bag, the combination which com prises a staff having a knob on the upper end, a point on the opposite end and a collar extended around the staff and spaced from the upper end, a sheet of material extended around the staff, means gathering the upper edge of the sheet of material around the staff and over said collar, a spool slidably mounted on the staff, means gathering the lower edge of the sheet of material around said spool, a separable fastener for temporarily holding the ends of the said sheet of material together, and a tie providing a loop on the upper part of the staff.
