2 Claims.
This invention relates to wearing apparel, and in particular a hat formed with radially disposed ribs representing a parasol and which is adapted to protect a person wearing the hat from the sun and weather and which is also adapted to be folded for use as a fan.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a folding article which is adapted for universal use and which may readily be folded to a compact package for carrying on the arm or in a handbag or the like.
Parasols, and also hats have been formed of different types and designs however where an article of this type is formed with radially disposed folding ribs the ribs are supported by the staff or stem and for this reason the device is not adapted for use as a hat. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a hat having radially disposed ribs with the ribs extended from a center opening and in which a cord extended through said center opening provides a loop for carrying and also means for tielng the device on the head.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide supporting means for a layer of foldable material wherein the material may be used as a hat, fan, or protecting shield.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination hat and fan in which the device is also adapted to be folded for carrying.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination parasol hat and fan which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in View the invention embodies a sheet of material substantially forming a circle having radially disposed ribs with reinforcing discs at the center and with a cord extended through a grommet mounted in the discs, and also a washer positioned in the center of the material.
Other features and advantages of the inven-- tion will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherem:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device taken on line ll of Fig. 2 with the device extended and looking upwardly toward the under surface of the device.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view also showing the device in the extended position.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the upper part of the device with the parts shown on an enlarged scale and taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a view illustrating the device with the parts folded.
Figure 5 is a view showing the device used as a hat. 7
Figure 6 is a view showing the device used as a fan.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved parasol hat and fan of this invention includes a sheet of material 10 having an" opening H at the center with a continuous hem 12 extended around the outer edge, ribs l3 extended from the center to' points I4, circular pieces of material, such as cloth as indicated by thev numerals l5 and I 6 stitched to the under surfaceof the, material l0, a grommet l'l positioned in the opening ll at the center of the material H), a washer l8 positioned on the outside of the grommet and a cord having sections I9 and 26 extended from a loop 2|.
As illustrated in Fig. l the sheet of material It is provided with scallops 22 between the points I4, however, it will be understood that the peripheral edge of the material may be formed in different designs and although the reinforcing elements l5 and I6 are shown circular it will also be understood that these may be formed of different designs.
The elements and I6 are stitched together with stitching, as indicated by the numeral 23 and, as shown in Fig. 3 the ends of the ribs l3 are positioned between the elements 15 and Hi.
It will be understood that the sheet of material in, elements 15 and I6, ribs I3 and cord may be formed of plastic or other suitable material or materials and the parts may be formed of suitable colors and in different sizes.
The strands of the cord may be provided with a twist or knot 24 for retaining the loop 2| of a predetermined size and the ends I9 and may also be provided with knots 25 and 26, respectively and tassels as indicated by the numerals 2'! and 28 may extend from the knots or ends of the cord.
With the parts formed in this manner the device may be folded, as illustrated in Fig. 4 whereby it may be placed in a hand bag or carried on an arm with the loop 2| positioned over the arm and when it is desired to use the device it may be opened to form a hat, as illustrated in Fig. 5 or the sides of the device may be folded together to form a fan, as shown in Fig. 6.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. An article of manufacture comprising a substantially circular sheet of material having scalloped edges and having an opening at the center, a first reinforcing element engaging the undersurface of the sheet of material about the opening at the center, a second reinforcing element engaging the undersurface of the first reinforcing element and each element having an opening therein communicating with the opening at the center, radially disposed reinforcing ribs positioned on said sheet of material, and terminating at their inner ends intermediate of said reinforcing elements, a grommet :positioned in the opening in the center of said sheet of material, and receiving the reinforcing elements and the sheet of material therein, a washer'positioned against the outer surface of said grommet and a cord having a knot therein engaging the washer at its lower end and providing a loop of predetermined size to serve asa hand hold when the free ends of the cord extending from the knot are threaded through the hole in the washer andthe grommet, and adapted to be tied under the chin of the wearer when the article is worn as a sunshade and adapted to be tied around the end remote from-the center of the said sheet when said article is in collapsediposition.
2. .An article of manufacture comprising a substantially circular sheet of material having scalloped edges and having an opening at the center, aifirst reinforcing element engaging the undersurface of the sheet of material about the opening at the center, a second reinforcing element engaging the undersurface of the first reinforcing element and each reinforcing element having an opening therein communicating with the opening in the center, radially disposed reinforcing ribs positioned on said sheet of material, the inner ends of said reinforcing ribs terminating intermediate the first and second reinforcing elements adjacent the opening therein, a grommet positioned in the opening in the center of said sheet of material, said grommet receiving the sheet of material and the reinforcing elements about the opening in the center therebetween, a washer positioned against the outer surface of said grommet and a cord having a knot therein engaging the washer at its lower end and providing a loop of predetermined size to serve as a 'hand hold when-the free ends of the cord extending from the knot are threaded through the hole in the washer and the grommet, and adapted to be tied under the chin of the wearer when the article is worn as a sunshade and adapted to be tied around the -:end remote from the center of sa'idrsheet when-said 'article is in collapsed position,:said cord having tassels, on the ends.
