The next step is to sew the strip of lace 9 to the body 1 by the seams 14 and 15.

The final step is to start the elastic end of the body 10 through the ring 10 and Work it all through. After that this end will not pass through the ring unless a small portion is started and drawn through carefully.

No. 404,729 3 Claims. ((11. 150-1) My invention relates to a ladies combination cap and curler bag which is adapted to be worn over the hair to keep it in order, whether or not the hair has curlers, and adapted to serve as a bag for carrying hair curlers. The purpose of the invention is to provide a combination curler bag and cap wherein a lace edged tubular fabric body is combined with an elastic band, a pair of draw strings, and a slip ring to produce a comfortable attractive cap and a safe handbag that will hold curlers.
The nature and advantages of my invention will appear more fully from the following description and the accompanying drawings illustratingthe preferred embodiment of the invention.

FIGURE 1 is a view in side elevation of the combined curler bag and cap used as a cap;
FIGURE 2 is a view in side elevation of the combined curler bag and cap used as a bag;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged sectional view showing the tubular fabric body cut in half and showing how the parts are secured in place and held by the slip ring;
FIGURE 4 is another sectional view further enlarged showing the assembled parts; and
FIGURE 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the steps of making the device.
In the making of the device I prefer to use a suitable cloth fabric which may be of any attractive color and design. This cloth is made into a tubular body 1 which is of suiiicient diameter to fit over the head and hair of a lady. The cloth is folded over at one end as shown and stitched at 2 to provide a finished end edge 3. Outward from but in close proximity to the stitching at 2, I provide an elastic band 4 around the body 1 and a strip 5 of fabric, such as decorative lace. This fabric strip adds strength and thickness adjacent to the portion 2. The band 4 of elastic tape is stretched while being sewn to the body 1. The band 4 should be shorter than the distance around the human head so it will be stretched enough, when placed around the head, to fit snugly without discomfort. Because of the construction employed here the elastic band 4 does not have to carry any of the strain when the device is used as a bag, so it may be light in weight. The function of the lace strip 5 is two fold. Its primary function, as will be pointed out later, is to provide bulk at this end of the body 1. The second function is one of decoration and covering. It covers the elastic band 4 and adds to the appearance of the device when used as a cap or a bag.
The other end of the body 1 is folded over and stitched at !12 and 13 to provide a channel 6 for draw strings 7 and 8. Openings 7a and 8a are provided in the body 1 for the draw strings 7 and 8 so that by pulling on the strings the body can be closed at this end. This end of the body 1 also has a lace fabric strip 9 sewed on it between the end 11 and the channel 6 by stitching 14 and 15.
T 0 complete the device a small rigid ring is placed around the body 1 before both ends are completed. The diameter of this ring is larger than the folded or compressed body 1 so that it can slide freely from one end to the other of the body. It is, however, smaller than the space occupied by the folded over body plus the lace strip 9 so that the ring cannot escape from that end of the body. It is also much smaller than the space occupied by the body 1, the elastic band 4 and the lace strip 5 so that the ring 10 cannot be forced over these parts. The ring 10 may be of metal, a plastic composition, or other suitable material.
The resulting device is used as a bag for curlers, etc, by simply placing the curlers within the body 1 with the ring 10 adjacent to the elastic band 4 and the other end of the body 1 open. The draw strings 7 and 8 are then used to close their end of the bag and they can be tied and used to carry the bag. When the device is to be used as a night cap, the draw string end of the bag is first fully opened, causing the draw strings 7 and 8 to slip into channel 6 with only their outer ends protruding. The ring 10 is then moved to the draw string end of the'bag to close it. The elastic band 4 permits the body 1 to be expanded to go over the head and keeps the cap on the head. When the device is empty it can be packed in a small space. 4
Referring now to FIGURE 5, this view shows the several steps of making the device. Beginning at the left hand end of this figure the initial steps are to turn in one end of a rectangular piece of cloth 1 and turn under about one-eighth of an inch of it and sew at 12. Next the seam 13 is sewn about onehalf inch toward the end 11 from the seam 12 to form the passage 6 for the draw strings 7 and 8. The next step is to sew the strip of lace 9 to the body 1 by the seams 14 and 15.
The other end of the body 1 is then turned in and about one-eighth of an inch is turned under as shown and sewed at 2. Then the elastic tape 4 is sewed on with the strip of lace 5 using a zig zag stitch, the elastic tape 4 being stretched while this is done. Then the two side edges of the cloth '1 are sewn together to make a tubular assembly. The apertures 7a and 8a are then cut in the material of the body 1 and the draw strings 7 and 8 are drawn through the passage 6. The final step is to start the elastic end of the body 10 through the ring 10 and Work it all through. After that this end will not pass through the ring unless a small portion is started and drawn through carefully.
It is believed that the nature and advantages of my invention will be clear from the foregoing description.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A combination curler bag and cap comprising a tubular fabric body, having a strip of fabric secured thereon and encircling the body at each end:
an elastic band encircling the body and secured thereto at one end of the body;
the other end of the body being provided with an annular channel with two opposite openings leading fr m the channel to the exterior of the body;
a draw string extending through each opening and around the body; and
a rigid ring surrrounding the the body between the two fabric strips, said ring being smaller than the combined strip and body cross section at either end of the body whereby to confine the ring on the body between said strips.
2. The device defined in claim 1 wherein one lace strip and the elastic band go around the body at the same place and are secured thereto by the same means.
3. The device defined in claim 1 wherein the body has a folded over end beyond the elastic band.

Claims (1)

1. A COMBINATION CURLED BAG AND CAP COMPRISING A TUBULAR FABRIC BODY, HAVING A STRIP OF FABRIC SECURED THEREON AND ENCIRCLING THE BODY AT EACH END: AN ELASTIC BAND ENCIRCLING THE BODY AND SECURED THERETO AT ONE END OF THE BODY THE OTHER END OF THE BODY BEING PROVIDED WITH AN ANNULAR CHANNEL WITH TWO OPPOSITE OPENINGS LEADING FROM THE CHANNEL TO THE EXTERIOR OF THE BODY; A DRAW STRING EXTENDING THROUGH EACH OPENING AND AROUND THE BODY; AND A RIGID RING SURROUNDING THE BODY BBETWEEN THE TWO FABRIC STRIPS, SAID RING BEING SMALLER THAN THE COMBINED STRIP AND BODY CROSS SECTION AT EITHER END OF THE BODY WHEREBY TO CONFINE THE RING ON THE BODY BETWEEN SAID STRIPS.
